An atypical interlaboratory assay: looking for an updated hallmark (-jewelry) method.

A comparison between a laser-induced breakdown spectrometry-partial least squares (LIBS-PLS) method and methods based on some well-known techniques, such as induced-coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), and atomic scanning microscopy (ASM) is presented in order to both validate the content of gold and silver in alloys to be used as solid standards and develop an alternative to the established methods for the hallmark of gold and silver in jewelry pieces. 17 alloys with gold concentrations ranging from 100 to 50% and 8 alloys with si

Subacute cadmium intoxication in jewelry workers: an evaluation of diagnostic procedures.

An outbreak of cadmium intoxication in a jewelry factory provided an opportunity for evaluating the usefulness of diagnostic procedures used to evaluate human cadmium toxicity. Blood cadmium levels in workers exposed to cadmium were higher (.93 micrograms/100ml vs .38 micrograms/100 ml) than in unexposed workers. A dose-response relationship was noted between blood cadmium level and symptom prevalence in four symptoms (dyspnea, chest pain, dysuria, and dizziness). Segmental hair analysis revealed highest cadmium levels (up to 19 micrograms/gm) in segments formed prior to cadmium exposure, sugg

Metal release from gold-containing jewelry materials: no gold release detected.

Metal release from 13 different gold-containing jewelry alloys stored for 1 and 3 weeks in artificial sweat was analysed. For chemical analysis, inductively-coupled plasma detection (ICP) and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AA), with flame and with furnace, were used. No release of gold was detected. It is unlikely that skin contact with gold-containing metallic items such as jewelry is responsible for inducing contact allergy to gold or allergic contact dermatitis due to the gold. The patch-test reactivity to gold sodium thiosulfate needs to be explained by some other mechanism(s).

Assessment of the exposure to elements from silver jewelry by hair mineral analysis.

The aim of the present article was to assess the effect of wearing silver jewelry on mineral composition of human scalp hair. To investigate the possible effect of gender, a group of females and males was distinguished. Subjects, who declared in the questionnaire wearing silver jewelry, constituted 55% of the whole population. It was found that individuals wearing jewelry had increased levels of Ag (~3 times), Ba (30%), Ca (33%), La (40%), Li (25%), and Zn (27%) in hair and lowered level of: Al (34%), K (79%), and Na (32.5%) in comparison with the group that did not wear jewelry. Those differe

[Metal accessories for children: when jewelry becomes a real risk of eye loss].

This study involved a 10-year old female patient admitted to the Ophthalmic Emergency Department with domestic trauma caused by her metal jewelry hung to the conjunctiva and the eyelid. Ophthalmic examination was strictly normal with the exception of the foreign body remarkably visible to the naked eye. The ablation of the foreign body resulted in localized subconjunctival haemorrhage without palpebral lesions, lesions of the right lateral muscle, conjunctival or scleral lacerations. The patient underwent treatment with artificial tears and antibiotics with good evolution. Tetanus vaccination

Poisoning and suicide by cyanide jewelry cleaner in the US Hmong community: a case series.

Over 200 000 persons of Hmong ethnicity live in the United States. The majority of this Southeast Asian ethnic group live in California, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Tradition plays a strong role in the Hmong population, and difficulty in assimilation into "Western ways" has been reported to result in depression and suicide attempts. Some products sold at Southeast Asian ethnic markets are well-known within the Hmong community to be lethal but are essentially unknown to the outside community. We describe eight cases in which cyanide-containing products were ingested by Hmong patients. Seven cases

Assessment of nickel and cobalt release from jewelry from a non-nickel directive country.

BACKGROUND: A directive restricting nickel release from jewelry and other skin-contact products has not been initiated in Thailand or in the United States. The prevalence of nickel and cobalt allergies is increasing, and the main cause of sensitization seems to be jewelry. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate nickel and cobalt release from jewelry available in Thai marketplaces and to study the factors associated with nickel and cobalt release. METHODS: Used costume jewelry items were collected from volunteers. They were tested with the dimethylglyoxime and cobalt tests. RESULTS: Five hundre

A patch test study to evaluate the allergenicity of a metallic jewelry alloy in patients allergic to cobalt.

Cobalt is a common inducer of allergic contact dermatitis. A new jewelry alloy containing cobalt was developed and tested on 30 individuals with documented allergy to cobalt. Of these subjects, 5 (18%) were found to be allergic to the new alloy after 7 or 8 days of exposure. In all cases, the reaction was much less severe than allergy to the 1% cobalt chloride patch test material. This new alloy should be better tolerated by individuals allergic to cobalt, perhaps because the cobalt is tightly bound in the alloy by the other main component, platinum.

The implications of healthcare professionals wearing jewelry on patient care biosafety: observational insights and experimental approaches.

The use of jewelry among healthcare professionals poses a risk of cross contamination due to potential bacterial accumulation and spread. Through a mixed-method design, this study first analyzed the implications of healthcare professionals wearing jewelry on patient care biosafety as well as on the residual bacterial load of hands and rings after hand hygiene. Firstly, an observational prevalence study to verify whether nursing professionals wear personal accessories during healthcare assistance was carried out. Second, an experimental design involving intentional contamination and hygiene of

Case report on complex jewelry foreign body ingestion in pediatric population: When watchful waiting prevails over intervention.

Foreign body ingestion (FBI) is a frequent pediatric emergency that often requires immediate, invasive endoscopic or surgical extraction when the object is large, multi-linked, or has sharp components. This case report highlights the safety and efficacy of an evidence-based watchful waiting protocol for a complex jewelry ingestion in an asymptomatic older child. An asymptomatic 8-year-old male presented to the emergency department 2 hours after accidentally swallowing a multi-linked metallic bracelet. Initial abdominal radiography 2 hours post-ingestion localized the radiopaque object to the p

DNA microarray analysis of the cyanotroph Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344 in response to nitrogen starvation, cyanide and a jewelry wastewater.

Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344 is an alkaliphilic bacterium that can use cyanide as nitrogen source for growth, becoming a suitable candidate to be applied in biological treatment of cyanide-containing wastewaters. The assessment of the whole genome sequence of the strain CECT5344 has allowed the generation of DNA microarrays to analyze the response to different nitrogen sources. The mRNA of P. pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344 cells grown under nitrogen limiting conditions showed considerable changes when compared against the transcripts from cells grown with ammonium; up-regulated genes wer

Nickel release from inexpensive jewelry and hair clasps purchased in an EU country - Are consumers sufficiently protected from nickel exposure?

BACKGROUND: Nickel allergic subjects are at risk factor of acquiring hand eczema. In 1990 and 1994, respectively, Denmark and member states in the EU regulated nickel release from selected consumer products. The intention was that the nickel epidemic could be controlled and prevented if the general population was protected from high cutaneous nickel concentrations. Despite a decrease, the prevalence of nickel allergy remains high as nearly 10% of young women are nickel allergic. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to perform dimethylglyoxime (DMG) testing of inexpensive jewelry and hair clasps purcha

Environmental assessment in fine jewelry in the U.S.-Mexico's Paso del Norte region: A qualitative study via X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy.

Heavy metal contamination in raw materials has spread widely in the United States. The high increased number of recalls in consumer products and the lack of stricter regulations in the raw materials to be used in the jewelry industry have raised concerns among consumers. Studies in low-cost jewelry have shown the presence and high content of heavy metals; this environmental problem led to a child's death after swallowing a charm containing elevated levels of lead (Pb). Exposure to heavy metals, through inhalation, mouth, and skin contact, causes adverse health effects in children and adults. E

[Piercing complications in the facial area].

From the ENT specialist's view, the wearing of piercing jewelry on the outer ear, the tongue, the lips, the nose or the eyebrows is the cause of many and sometimes serious local and also systemic complications. Especially on the outer ear allergic reactions, keloid formation, traumatic tears or embedding of the piece of jewelry can occur in addition to simple, superficial infections or perichondritis. Through specific advice, early detection and treatment of complications, serious health damage to the wearer of piercing jewelry can be avoided.

Allergic contact dermatitis to gold.

Gold is a relatively common allergen that appears to induce dermatitis about the face and eyelids, as well as at sites of direct cutaneous contact. In this study, 355 patients with suspected contact dermatitis were evaluated; 17 (4.8%) were found to be allergic to gold. Fifteen of these 17 patients were re-evaluated at > 2 months after patch testing. When contact with gold jewelry was discontinued, 7 of 15 (46.7%) of the gold-allergic patients reported that their dermatitis cleared. In 3 of 7 patients (42.9%), discontinuing contact with gold jewelry was the only modification to their behavior;

Face Piercing (Body Art): Choosing Pleasure vs. Possible Pain and Posture Instability.

Piercings (body art, i.e., with jewelry) are more and more widespread. They can induce various complications such as infections, allergies, headaches, and various skin, cartilage, or dental problems, and represent a public health problem. We draw attention to possible side effects resulting from face piercing complications observed on four young adults such as eye misalignment, decreased postural control efficiency, and non-specific chronic back pain with associated comorbidity. We found that the origin was pierced jewelry on the face. Removing the jewelry restored eye alignment, improved post
