Gait and jogging parameters in people with minimally impaired multiple sclerosis.

Increasing awareness of the significance of ambulatory limitations in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) requires a regular assessment of walking ability in order to monitor disease dynamics. However, it is questionable whether the standard tools are sufficiently sensitive to detect mobility deficits in patients who are minimally impaired. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to examine an extended assessment tool characterizing spatio-temporal parameters of gait and jogging in people with minimally impaired MS. Twenty relapsing remitting patients diagnosed with MS, 8 women and 12

Alternating sciatica while jogging: an early symptom of cauda equina tumor.

Three athletic patients with cauda equina or lumbosacral cord tumor noticed, as an early symptom of the disease, alternating bilateral sciatica synchronized with each stride while jogging. Comparison with athletic patients who developed lumbar disc hernia suggested that this symptom was significant. The authors speculated that the mechanism producing this symptom is the inertial force induced while jogging, which acts on the tumor in its early stage, when it is still quite mobile in the intradural space. The diagnostic role of this symptom in cauda equina and lumbosacral cord tumor should be r

Effect of anterior cruciate ligament deficiency on economy of walking and jogging.

The metabolic cost of walking and jogging following injury to the anterior cruciate ligament is unknown. Economy of motion refers to the oxygen consumption for a submaximal work rate. The purpose of this study was to compare the economy of walking and jogging of an anterior cruciate ligament-deficient population with that of a control population without orthopaedic abnormalities. Steady-state oxygen consumption was measured in 30 patients and 98 controls while they were on a treadmill at various speeds. Deficiency of the anterior cruciate ligament was diagnosed arthroscopically. The patients a

A comparison of subtalar joint maximal eversion while jogging on the minitrampoline and floor.

The jogging minitrampoline is a common tool for exercise and rehabilitation that is lauded as helpful in reducing lower extremity stresses. The deformable bed of the minitrampoline may result in altered jogging mechanics of the subtalar joint, potentially leading to uncharacteristic mechanics of the lower extremity. The purpose of this study was to examine eversion of the subtalar joint in subjects jogging on the minitrampoline vs. a wooden floor surface. Subjects were instrumented with a flexible electrogoniometer (elgon) taped from the heel to the gastrocnemius along the Achilles tendon. The

Effects of jogging exercise on patients with the pigmentary dispersion syndrome and pigmentary glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced anterior chamber pigment dispersion with intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation has been reported in patients with the pigmentary dispersion syndrome. Marked pigment dispersion with or without elevation of IOP could predispose these patients to visual field loss. The authors designed this study to evaluate the effects of jogging exercise on anterior chamber pigment and IOP in a group of patients with the pigmentary dispersion syndrome or pigmentary glaucoma. METHODS: Fourteen subjects with the pigmentary dispersion syndrome, 10 subjects with pigmentary glaucoma, and

Development of a submaximal treadmill jogging test for fit college-aged individuals.

The purpose of this study was to develop a single-stage submaximal treadmill jogging test for the estimation of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). VO2max was measured in 129 relatively fit individuals (males = 84, females = 45), 18-29 yr, using a maximal treadmill protocol (mean +/- SD; VO2max = 48.3 +/- 6.2 ml.kg-1 x min-1, range = 35.6 to 62.3 ml.kg-1 x min-1). The treadmill test required subjects to sustain a comfortable, submaximal jogging pace (4.3-7.5 mph; level grade) until a steady-state heart rate was achieved (approximately 3 min). To help ensure that a submaximal level of exertion was

Mechanism of muscle activation in the protection of knee joint injury during jogging.

BACKGROUND: It is important to understand the role of muscle activation in knee joint protection against the injuries, such as meniscus tear, cartilage wear, and ligament damage, often caused by muscle weakness, improper running posture, or overtraining. Research on the finite element knee model with muscles has not been reported yet, nor have there been any biomechanical explorations on the internal tissues of knee joint with muscle activation. OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism of muscle activation in jogging for the protection against knee joint injuries based on the stress fields of the

Barefoot vs shod walking and jogging on the electromyographic activity of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius.

Gastrocnemius weakness is associated with Achilles tendinopathies and muscle strains, with the medial gastrocnemius (MG) more commonly injured than the lateral gastrocnemius (LG). Walking and jogging are common in daily activities and sports, and biomechanical differences between shod and barefoot exercise may influence MG and LG activation. Understanding these activation patterns could help optimize training programs for injury prevention and/or rehabilitation. The aim was to compare MG and LG electromyographic activity during walking and jogging, both shod and barefoot. Twenty-nine participa

Accelerations and EMG Differences Between Isocaloric High-Incline Walking and Level-Grade Jogging.

High-incline walking is a popular mode of exercise and often serves as an alternative to level-grade running for improving cardiovascular fitness. This study examined the muscle activation and biomechanical differences between high-incline walking (HIW) at a 20% grade and level-grade jogging (LGJ) at matched exercise intensities. Nineteen physically inactive adults (18-31 years) participated. Participants completed two isocaloric exercise trials (HIW and LGJ), each lasting ten minutes. EMG data were obtained from eight muscles: biceps femoris (BF), gluteus maximus (GM), lateral gastrocnemius (

Denosumab and Slow-Jogging Aerobic Exercise in Aromatase Inhibitor-Associated Musculoskeletal Syndrome: A Case Series.

As breast cancer incidence rises, aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal syndrome (AIMSS) has become increasingly prevalent, yet treatment remains diverse and lack clearly defined therapeutic targets. We report 3 postmenopausal breast cancer patients (mean age: 64.7 y) who developed AIMSS after more than 6 months of AIs therapy. After receiving denosumab and participating in slow-jogging aerobic exercise aimed at improving bone mineral density and reducing the android-to-gynoid fat ratio, all 3 patients demonstrated marked improvements in pain scores (Visual Analog Scale, VAS), grip st

Muscle dynamics analysis by clustered categories during jogging in patients with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency (ACLD) tend to have altered lower extremity dynamics. Little is known about the changes in dynamic function and activation during jogging in patients with ACLD. METHODS: Twenty patients with an injured ACL before ACL reconstruction (ACLD group) and nine healthy male volunteers (control group) were recruited. Each volunteer repeated the jogging experiment five times. Based on the experimental data measured, a musculoskeletal multibody dynamics model was employed to simulate the tibiofemoral joint dynamics during jogging. Eig
