Features of the Femoral Proximocaudal Joint Capsule Insertion Among Canids.

This observational study was conducted to evaluate the anatomic relationship between the proximocaudal femoral joint capsule insertion and the femoral caudolateral curvilinear osteophyte (CCO), across ancient and modern domestic and non-domestic canids. Museum specimens of proximal femora were screened for presence of remnant enthesophytes of the caudal joint capsule insertion (first inclusion criterion) and then for the CCO (second inclusion criterion). The initially screened population included 267 dry bone specimens: Six Canis species, hybrid coyote × domestic dog, and five vulpines (three

The innervation of canine hip joint capsule: an anatomic study.

To clarify the contributions of the nerves supplying the canine hip joint capsule for clinical application, cadaver study of six healthy mongrel dogs was performed. The pelvises and hindlimbs of cadavers were dissected and fixed in formaldehyde. Innervation of the joint capsule was investigated with the aid of an operative microscope. As a result, the canine hip joint capsule receives multiple innervations from articular branches of four nerves. They are articular nerve fibres of femoral, obturator, cranial gluteal and sciatic nerves from the cranioventral, caudoventral, craniolateral and dors

Posterior acetabular fracture-dislocations: fragment size, joint capsule, and stability.

In acetabular fractures, the size of a significant posterior wall fragment remains undefined as it affects joint stability. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate fragment size and hip stability in cadaveric specimens after serial osteotomies. Also, the role of the posterior capsule, in the various osteotomies, was evaluated for changes in hip stability. We found that fragments involving 25% or less of the acetabulum are insignificant, i.e., do not affect joint stability, while fragments involving 50% or more are significant. The significance of transitional fragments (25-50%

Contribution of the anterolateral joint capsule to the mechanical stability of the ankle.

Published reports describe the clinical efficacy of modified Brostrom anatomic repairs, surgical procedures that involve repair and fortification of the lateral capsuloligamentous complex of the ankle for patients suffering from chronic lateral instability of this joint. A cadaveric serial sectioning study of the anterior talofibular ligament, the calcaneofibular ligament, and the remainder of the anterolateral joint capsule was completed to quantitate the contribution of the superior portion of the anterolateral joint capsule, independent of the other two structures, to the overall mechanical

Isolated injuries to the dorsoradial capsule of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint.

Isolated injuries to the dorsoradial capsule of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint are rarely reported. We report 11 patients who had a tear in the dorsoradial capsule of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint without an associated collateral ligament injury. Seven of the injuries were confirmed at surgical exploration and repaired by imbrication/direct repair. Six of these seven patients were able to return to unrestricted activities without requiring analgesics. The surgical patients had increased baseline metacarpophalangeal joint flexion compared to "average," which may predispose them to is

An anatomical study of the fetal superior capsule of the glenohumeral joint.

INTRODUCTION: The superior part of the glenohumeral joint capsule has an intimate relationship with the tendons of the rotator cuff and the tendon of the long head of the biceps. One of the strategies currently proposed in the event of a massive cuff rupture is to reconstruct this superior capsule. The main objective of this anatomical study was to describe the superior joint capsule of the embryonic glenohumeral joint and its relationship to the tendons of the rotator cuff. HYPOTHESIS: The hypothesis was that this structure was an anatomical entity, morphologically identifiable from the embr

Arthrography of the shoulder joint: study of the findings in adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder. Study of the findings in adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder.

1. Arthrography of the shoulder demonstrates the gross pathological changes in adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder. In true adhesive capsulitis, or frozen shoulder, arthrography shows a very definite decrease in joint capacity with obliteration of the reflected axillary fold. In many instances the subscapularis bursa is decreased in size or not visualized at all but, as a rule, the bicipital sheath is well outlined. 2. This procedure can serve as a diagnostic aid to differentiate true adhesive capsulitis from stiff and painful shoulder due to other causes. 3. A mixture of twelve cubic centimet

Anatomic Study of Hip Pericapsular Muscle Arrangement on the Joint Capsule.

BACKGROUND: Despite the recognized importance of pericapsular muscles in hip stability, their specific roles in stability remain debated. For anatomically elucidating how the pericapsular muscles can act on the femoral head and neck through the joint capsule, this study aimed to investigate pericapsular muscle arrangement on the joint capsule with a positional relation to the femoral head and neck and their histological relationships. METHODS: Eight hips of 7 anatomic donors (average age, 72.5 years) fixed with 8% formalin were analyzed. Five hips were macroscopically assessed to determine th

Biomechanical properties of the glenohumeral joint capsule in hemiplegic shoulder pain.

BACKGROUND: Although many hemiplegic shoulder patients have been suffering from limited range of motion, it is not fully established whether the pathologic biomechanics are same in hemiplegic shoulder pain and adhesive capsulitis. Therefore we aimed to investigate biomechanical properties of glenohumeral joint capsules of hemiplegic shoulder pain with limited range of motions. METHODS: Participants were 14 patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain, 10 controls, and 42 adhesive capsulitis patients matched with the hemiplegic shoulder pain group for sex, age, and range of motion. Platelet-rich plasma attenuates the severity of joint capsule fibrosis following post-traumatic joint contracture in rats.

Background: Post-traumatic joint contracture (PTJC) mainly manifests as excessive inflammation leading to joint capsule fibrosis. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, a key regulator of inflammation and fibrosis, can promote fibroblast activation, proliferation, migration, and differentiation into myofibroblasts. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is considered to have strong potential for improving tissue healing and regeneration, the ability to treat joint capsule fibrosis remains largely unknown. Methods: In this study, we aimed to determine the antifibrotic potential of PRP in vivo or in vitro and

[Anterior and lateral disk and capsule tissue of the temporomandibular joint and its relevance for temporomandibular joint diagnosis].

OBJECTIVE: Fibrocartilage that bears tensile stress is typically fixed bilaterally to adjacent bone by collagenous fibres. For the temporomandibular joint, such disc fixations in the anterior and lateral regions have not been described, even in MRT findings of anterior disc dislocations without reduction. By observing collagenous fibres of the anterior and lateral discuss and capsule tissue, we sought to establish whether tensile load capacities typical for fibrocartilage also apply to the discuss articularis of the mandibular joint in sagittal direction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using dissecti

Clinical management of finger joint capsulitis/synovitis in a rock climber.

This case study presents a 23-year-old male recreational rock climber, who climbed an average of 3-4 times per week and presented with finger joint capsulitis/synovitis after increasing his climbing intensity and training from moderate to high over 6 months, which led up to injury. During the exam, the diagnosis was ruled in with clinical orthopedic testing. Additional movement analyses revealed improper gripping mechanics contributing to asymmetric finger loading. A comprehensive rehabilitation program was developed based on the concept of a progressive framework that included unloading of th

Anatomy of the Tarsal Canal and Sinus in Relation to the Subtalar Joint Capsule.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical knowledge of the tarsal canal and sinus is still unclear owing to the complexity of the ligamentous structures within them, particularly the relationship with the capsules of the subtalar joints. The aim of this study was to examine the anatomical relationship between the fibrous tissues of the tarsal canal and sinus and the articular capsules of the subtalar joint. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive anatomical study of 21 embalmed cadaveric ankles. For a macroscopic overview of the subtalar joint, we removed the talus in 18 ankles and separated the fibrous tissues fro

Tensile properties of the knee-joint capsule at an elevated intraarticular pressure.

In order to evaluate the capsular reaction to high intraarticular pressure (IAP) in the knee during arthroscopy, we examined 13 patients admitted for elective surgery with joint infusion to 30, 70, 120 and 170 mmHg IAP (4, 9.3, 16 and 22.7 kPa). The infusion was repeated once, at all IAP levels except 30 mmHg, after 2 min and was recorded for another 2 min. A pressure-time curve was recorded as a combined effect of viscoelastic properties of the capsule and extraarticular fluid absorption. 3 more knee joints were infused directly to 170 mmHg and a pressure-time curve was recorded for 15 min, a
