Treatment of late-onset temporomandibular joint prosthesis infection by prosthesis revision: a case report.

Late-onset infection of an inserted temporomandibular joint prosthesis is a difficult complication to treat. Most treatment protocols for late prosthetic infections include device replacement. A 40-year-old female patient with an infected and exposed temporomandibular joint prosthesis presented 3 years after implant placement. The patient was treated with prosthesis revision including fistula coverage with a temporalis muscle flap and prolonged antibiotic therapy for 10 weeks. Since completion of treatment, the patient has been infection-free.

[Bypass spanning the knee joint with synthetic prosthesis].

Synthetic tubes are the second choice for below-knee bypass materials. The ring-reinforced thin-walled Goretex-PTFE graft is an approved material which was tested in a multicenter study. The primary 3 years patency for below-knee femoral-popliteal bypass was 64%, for crural bypass 39%. A total of 195 grafts have been implanted. Long-term patency depends very much on the run-off conditions (81% in good and 43% in bad cases). The over-all limb salvage rate was 80% after 3 years.

Partial Ossicular Reconstruction With a Novel Ball Joint Prosthesis: The mCLIP ARC Partial Prosthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Middle ear surgery involves reconstruction of the ossicular chain, predominately using rigid implants. New middle ear prostheses strive to mimic the physiologic micromovements of the ossicular chain and prevent dislocation, protrusion, and preloading of the annular ligament due to pressure fluctuations. METHODS: Thirty-five patients were included in a monocentric, prospective observational study. Patients received tympanoplasty with ossicular reconstruction using the mCLIP ARC partial prosthesis. This titanium prosthesis is equipped with a clip mechanism for coupling at the stapes

[Use of intraosseous implants in joint prosthesis of the hip].

The authors examine actual problems in total hip endoprostheses fixation and dwell upon solutions used up to date. The authors propose a new technique of prosthethic socket fixation based on endosseous implantology. This method should increase long term stability utilizing at the same time the immediate stability offered by methyl-methacrylate cement.

[Functional results after temporomandibular joint reconstruction using a total joint prosthesis (part II)].

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are usually managed medically. But partial or total reconstruction may be indicated according to the severity and the functional impairment. We assessed the functional results after total TMJ reconstruction using the Biomet Microfixation® prosthesis (Jacksonville, FL, USA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed the files of patients having undergone reconstruction, between 2009 and 2010, with a total TMJ prosthesis. We analyzed the pre- and postoperative mouth opening, the pre- and postoperative occlusion, pre- and postoperative pain according

Extended total temporomandibular joint reconstruction prosthesis: A comprehensive analysis.

Alloplastic total temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) is the treatment of choice for end-stage temporomandibular joint diseases. Extended TMJR (eTMJR) is a modification of the standard alloplastic fossa-condyle joint that includes components extending further to the skull base or the mandible. The aim of this study is to review the use of the eTMJR prosthesis for the treatment of large craniomaxillofacial defects. Data mining was performed according to the PRISMA statement using online search in databases such as PubMed (Medline), Google Scholar, Dimensions, Semantic Scholar and Web of

Total joint prosthesis for ankylosis after multiples condylar traumas.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is a disease commonly associated with facial trauma, especially in the condylar region. Described as a heterotopic bone growth that causes mouth opening limitation, it may occur in trauma cases misdiagnosed or mistreated. We present the case of a 37-year-old female, with decreased mouth opening after three traumas in the region of the right condyle by a motorcycle accident. We performed custom-made total joint replacement of the TMJ to rehabilitate the patient post arthroplasty. TMJ Concepts® protocol was followed to perform the patient's rehabilitation.

[Research advances of complications regarding temporomandibular joint prosthesis replacement].

Replacement of the temporomandibular joint (RTJ) has undergone decades of technological improvements and is now an important treatment for end-stage temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease. The main complications of RTJ include aseptic loosening, heterotopic ossification, postsurgical infection, hypersensitivity reaction, prosthesis loosening or malposition, nerve injury and severe bleeding. Improvement in clinical technique is now the key to resolving complications. In the future, improvements in prosthetic materials may be an important development for newer iterations. With the development and

Surface wear in a custom manufactured temporomandibular joint prosthesis.

The wear of a novel temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prosthesis was evaluated in an animal model. The prosthesis consisted of an additively manufactured titanium alloy (Ti6 Al4 V) mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa created through selective laser melting, with a machined vitamin E-enriched ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) surface attached to the fossa. Thirteen TMJ prosthesis were implanted in sheep, six of which had condylar heads coated with HadSat® diamond-like carbon (H-DLC). Euthanasia took place after 288 days, equaling 22 years of human mastication. Linear and volumetric

A new total distal radioulnar joint prosthesis: functional outcome.

PURPOSE: To present the evolution of design and the short-term functional outcome of our distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) prosthesis. This total DRUJ prosthesis differs from others in that it consists of 2 parts and attains bony fixation by its hydroxyapatite coating. METHODS: Nineteen patients received a DRUJ prosthesis after a failed Darrach procedure (n = 10), Sauvé-Kapandji procedure (n = 7), trauma (n = 1), or DRUJ synovitis (n = 1). Indications for the placement were decreased grip, decreased forearm motion, and pain due to ulnar impingement syndrome and instability of the distal ulna. Se

[Septic infection of hip joint prosthesis with Listeria monocytogenes].

A case of Listeria monocytogenes septicaemia and infection of a prosthetic hip joint is presented in a patient with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The patient developed the infection five and a half years after primary alloplastic operation. The prosthesis was removed and a temporary prosthesis with gentamicin was placed ("spacer"). The antibiotic treatment included ampicillin, pivampicillin and sulfamethoxazole-trimetroprim. Six weeks after removal of the prosthesis an un-cemented prosthesis was placed, and the patient had a full functional recovery.

[Sensitivity to constituents of bone cement in a patient with joint prosthesis].

Failure to tolerate prosthetic material can lead to a variety of clinical findings. A 55-year-old woman had a total replacement of the right knee. Two weeks later she developed pruritic skin lesions over the joint, as well as pain and impaired function. Allergic testing showed clinically relevant Type IV sensitization to methylmethacrylate, as well as to various formulations of the bone cement, including one with an added antibiotic. The symptom complex of pruritic skin lesions in the area of the prosthesis, pain and disability, as well as relevant Type IV sensitization justified replacing the

Postoperative migration of short stem prosthesis of the hip joint.

BACKGROUND: Hip replacement surgery is a popular procedure that provides predictable, long-lasting and good effects. The use of short stem prostheses helps preserve an intact medullary cavity and proximal diaphysis. It has been demonstrated that the use of short stem prostheses leads to better clinical results compared to standard stem prostheses. The study aimed to assess the migration of the stem of the Proxima hip prosthesis. Migration was defined as a change in the angle of stem position towards a varus deformity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 164 patients (83 women, 81 men) wh

[Treatment of degenerative disease of knee joint with the Oxford prosthesis].

Eleven patients with single compartment arthrosis of the knee were treated surgically, using the Oxford prosthesis. The age of the patients at the time of surgery ranged from 48 to 73 years. Varus deformity of the knee before surgery ranged from 0-23 degrees (average: 11 degrees). Patients with arthrosis of the medial compartment were elected for surgery. Surgery was performed only when passive correction of the varus deformity was possible and when the cruciate ligaments were intact. In all cases surgery yielded a stable knee joint.

A metallic hemiarthroplasty resurfacing prosthesis for the hallux metatarsophalangeal joint.

Two-hundred seventy-nine arthritic hallux metatarsophalangeal joints treated surgically with a metallic resurfacing hemiarthroplasty over a 40-year period were reviewed. The implant, which is made available in three evenly graded sizes, is designed to replace only the articular surface of the proximal phalanx, with minimal resection of bone stock. The pathologic indications for surgery included classical hallux rigidus, rheumatoid arthritis, and degenerative changes associated with hallux valgus and bunion deformity. Follow-up at 8 months to 33 years after surgery revealed good or excellent cl
