Kava dermopathy is a common cutaneous effect of regular or heavy use of Kava, a psychoactive beverage consumed widely throughout the Pacific. In Fiji in 2012, over 1000 study participants underwent full skin examination, and kava dermopathy was a common cutaneous finding. The clinical manifestations of kava dermopathy share similarities with the spectrum of autosomal recessive congenital ichthyoses, predominantly lamellar ichthyosis. The pathogenesis of Kava dermopathy may be associated with a functional defect in one or more cytochrome P450 enzymes implicated in epidermal integrity, thus mimi

The pathophysiology of kava hepatotoxicity remains inconclusive. There is circumstantial evidence for the roles of toxic metabolites, inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes and depletion of liver glutathione. Pharmacogenomic effects are likely, particularly for Cytochrome P450 genes. Experimental and clinical cases of hepatotoxicity show evidence of hepatitis. The question remains whether this inflammation is caused by components of kava directly, or indirectly due to the downstream effects.

Liver toxicity from the use of kava dietary supplements has been reported, but little is known about the side effects of traditional kava preparations. We present a case study of a tourist who developed serious toxic liver disease after consumption of kava beverages in traditional Samoan kava ceremonies.

Kava is a perennial shrub native to some islands of the South Pacific and has been cultivated for centuries to prepare a psychoactive beverage from its rhizoma by means of extraction. Subsequently, kava extracts are commonly used as herbal anxiolytic drugs also in many other countries all over the world including European ones and the USA. Toxicological and clinical studies have shown that kava extracts are virtually devoid of toxic effects with the exception of rare hepatotoxic side effects reported in few patients. When assessed primarily by the British regulatory authority MCA but also by u

Kava is an extract from the Piper methysticum Forst. f. plant that has social and spiritual importance in Pacific islands societies. Herbal remedies that contain kava are used for the psychiatric treatment of anxiety and insomnia. Laboratory studies have found only subtle, if any, changes on cognitive or motor functions from the acute effects of consuming small clinical doses of kava products. Intoxication from recreational doses of kava has not been studied. The performance of individuals intoxicated from drinking kava (n=11) was compared with a control group (n=17) using saccade and cognitiv

The effects of kava, a native drink from Oceania, on neuromuscular transmission and muscle contractility have been examined in mouse phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm and frog sartorius muscle preparations using twitch tension and intracellular recording techniques. The extent of muscle paralysis induced by kava was similar in both directly and indirectly stimulated mouse hemidiaphragms. The neuromuscular blockade produced was poorly reversed by calcium and by neostigmine. Intracellular recordings from frog sartorius muscles showed that kava depressed the amplitude of both miniature end-plate potent

Kava is a beverage prepared from the rhizomes and roots of the tropical evergreen plant Piper methysticum. Kava contains 6 major kavalactones. Legacy studies found that kavalactones did not inhibit human cytochrome P450s in vitro at relevant concentrations, and kava did not inhibit the major P450s in humans in vivo and was devoid of clinically significant drug interactions. Nevertheless, CYP2B6 was never evaluated. Recent investigation identified that (+)-dihydromethysticin, 1 of the 6 natural kavalactones, was an inhibitor of CYP2B6 in vitro. This investigation evaluated the effects of kava e

Kava (Piper methysticum) has been widely consumed for many years in the South Pacific Islands and displays psychoactive properties, especially soothing and calming effects. This plant has been used in Western countries as a natural anxiolytic in recent decades. Kava has also been used to treat symptoms associated with depression, menopause, insomnia, and convulsions, among others. Along with its putative beneficial health effects, kava has been associated with liver injury and other toxic effects, including skin toxicity in heavy consumers, possibly related to its metabolic profile or interfer

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic and debilitating condition characterized by persistent and overpowering anxiety. Treatment of GAD with antidepressants and benzodiazepines is only moderately effective and not free from side effects. Kava (Piper methysticum) has been explored as a potential phytotherapeutic option for GAD.
OBJECTIVES: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the available evidence on Kava as a treatment for GAD.
METHODS: Systematic search of English-language publications from major databases for clinical trials reporting the effects of Ka

UNLABELLED: Kava beverages, made from dried roots of the shrub Piper methysticum, have been used ceremonially and socially in the South Pacific and in Europe since the 1700s. The drink is reported to have pleasant mild psychoactive effects, similar to alcoholic beverages. In the United States, kava kava is an herbal product used extensively as an alternative to anti-anxiety drugs such as Xanax and Valium. It has also been reported as being used to help children with hyperactivity and as a skin-conditioning agent in cosmetics. Kava kava was nominated by the National Cancer Institute for study b

Kava is a neuroactive medicinal herb that can induce pharmacological effects when ingested. As an herbal remedy, kava exhibits sedative, anesthetic, euphoriant, and entheogenic effects. Kava is used as a relaxant, pain reliever, and remedy for anxiety and insomnia. In the United States, kava is marketed as a safe dietary supplement. Kava's popularity is on the rise due to heightened awareness and interest in natural plant-based health alternatives. Although meta-analyses and systematic reviews of kava use in treating anxiety are favorable, results remain inconsistent. Due to poor quality contr

This is the first report showing that kava lactones are plant and plant fungus growth inhibitors. Aqueous extract of kava roots showed high allelopathic potential and strongly suppressed germination and growth of lettuce, radish, barnyardgrass, and monochoria. Nine kava lactones were detected using GC-MS including desmethoxyyagonin, kavain, 7,8-dihydrokavain, hydroxykavain, yagonin, 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroxyyagonin, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, and 11-hydroxy-12-methoxydihydrokavain. Quantities of desmethoxyyagonin, kavain, 7,8-dihydrokavain, yagonin, methysticin, and dihydromethysticin detecte

This paper systematically reviews the clinical evidence relating to the safety of extracts of the herbal anxiolytic kava (Piper methysticum). Literature searches were conducted in four electronic databases and the reference lists of all papers located were checked for further relevant publications. Information was also sought from the spontaneous reporting schemes of the WHO and national drug safety bodies and ten manufacturers of kava preparations were contacted. Data from short-term post-marketing surveillance studies and clinical trials suggest that adverse events are, in general, rare, mil

Kava consumption is a traditional practice in Polynesian and Micronesian cultures. It has recently gained popularity in the United States for therapeutic and recreational use. We report the following case. A man presented to the emergency department after a fall while intoxicated on kava. He was medically admitted for altered mental status, facial and clavicle fractures, and hyponatremia. Psychiatry was consulted for management of delirium. On interview, he reported consuming escalating amounts of kava for weeks despite attempts to stop. He was diagnosed with acute kava withdrawal with hyperac

INTRODUCTION: Hepatic toxicity from manufactured herbal remedies that contain kava lactones has been reported in Europe, North America, and Australia. There is no evidence for serious liver damage in kava-using populations in Pacific Island societies or in Indigenous Australians who have used aqueous kava extracts. This article presents evidence that liver function changes in users of aqueous kava extracts appear to be reversible. Data from one Arnhem Land community [Northern Territory (NT), Australia] with 340 indigenous people older than 15 years of age in 2000 are used.

A temporal relationship between liver enzyme derangement and an herbal remedy warrants further assessment for herb-induced liver injury (HILI). Here, we describe the use of kava, a drink traditionally consumed in Pacific Island cultures, causing acute ALT and AST elevation as assessed by an updated RUCAM score of 7. The increasing use of kava in Western society should prompt clinicians to be more aware of this rare cause of HILI. A 46-year-old man was referred to the emergency department with a 3-week history of fatigue, right upper quadrant pain, and profound transaminitis. He commenced kava

BACKGROUND: 'Kava,' or 'kava kava,' (Piper methysticum) is a psychoactive plant indigenous to the Pacific Islands. Historical consumption is reported to provide anxiolytic and sedating effects. In regions where kava is native, it has been used in religious and cultural practices, as well as for medicinal purposes. The mechanisms by which kavalactones - the best studied psychoactive constituent of kava - may mediate pharmacological effects include enhancing the GABAA receptor, blocking of sodium and calcium channels, blocking reuptake of norepinephrine dopamine, and inhibiting MAO-B.
