BACKGROUND: Intracellular keratin aggregation and clumping is a characteristic ultrastructural feature in epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS)-Dowling Meara (DM) yet without histologic correlates in routinely stained specimens.

We examined the presence and the distribution of epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and keratin in 4 cases (6 specimens) of mammary Paget's disease and 9 cases (18 specimens) of extramammary Paget's disease utilizing immunoperoxidase technique. BACKGROUND: Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) and pompholyx are chronic diseases characterized by pustules and vesicles on the palms and soles. These disorders often have similar clinicopathological features, which lead to diagnostic difficulties. In this investigation the healing pattern of experimental central and marginal pars tensa perforations in cats and rats was studied by using light and scanning electronmicroscopic techniques. The perforations were closed by hyperplastic squamous epithelium exhibiting a marked keratin production. This keratin formed a membranous structure which primarily appeared to close the perforation. No ingrowth of squamous epithelium into the middle ear cavity could be detected. Generally speaking, the perforations had closed within 9-11 days in rats and within 12-14 days in cats.

The immunophenotypes of 74 malignant lymphomas (9 Hodgkin's disease, 19 low-grade B-cell, 20 high-grade B-cell, 8 T-cell, and 18 large cell anaplastic lymphomas [LCAL]) have been characterized with antibodies against leucocyte differentiation antigens, keratin, and vimentin. BACKGROUND: Epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma (EPPK) is characterized by diffuse hyperkeratosis affecting palms and soles with suprabasal epidermolysis or vacuolar degeneration histopathologically. The disorder is caused by heterozygous mutations in KRT9 or KRT1. Dominant-negative mutations in KRT1 could also result in epidermolytic ichthyosis with EPPK, a more severe entity affecting the entire body.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the genetic basis and pathogenesis of two unrelated patients with EPPK and knuckle pads, both of whom were born to consanguineous parents of Chinese origin.
