Atypical cells resembling Reed-Sternberg cells are a characteristic histologic feature of lymphomatoid papulosis. Thus far no consistent data are available on the nature of these cells, or a possible antigenic relationship between them and Reed-Sternberg cells. A 48-year-old woman was admitted with neck tumors and cutaneous nodules. On the histological basis of the skin nodule biopsy, a metastatic anaplastic carcinoma was suspected. CD30, Ki-1 antigen, an activated T-cell antigen, is a member of the nerve growth factor receptor family. This antigen is expressed on the lymphoma cells of some adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL/L) patients and some patients with Epstein-Barr virus infection. CD30-positive large cell cutaneous T-cell lymphomas occasionally integrate a defective HTLV-1 provirus. We describe here an HTLV-1 carrier who developed Ki-1 lymphoma with no evidence of monoclonal integration of the HTLV-1 proviral sequence.

We have performed an immunohistochemical study of immunoblastic T cell lymphoma and enteropathy-associated T cell lymphoma for alpha-1 anti-trypsin and CD30. Cytoplasmic staining for alpha 1 anti-trypsin is present in the malignant cells in both types of T cell neoplasm which also express CD30, a marker of lymphoid activation. We report here a case of acute polymyositis associated with a Ki-1 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). This anaplastic large cell malignant lymphoma was a primary T-cell NHL lymphoma of the bone marrow.
