BACKGROUND: Recurrence in individual patients after complete surgical removal of meningiomas cannot be predicted by histology alone because recurrence occurs even in histologically benign meningiomas.
METHODS: We investigated proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Ki-67 labeling indices of histologically benign meningiomas in 95 patients to assess their relationship to recurrence. The labeling index (LI) was expressed as the percentage of tumor cell nuclei immunoreactive for PCNA or Ki-67 to total tumor nuclei counted per section. Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a formidable disease with considerable morbidity. Among tumors associated with NF2, schwannomas are the most difficult to treat because they are multiple and tend to recur. The morphologic distinction between parathyroid carcinoma and adenoma can be a difficult diagnostic problem. We analyzed nuclear immunoreactivity for the cell cycle-associated antigen Ki-67 with monoclonal antibody (MAb) MIB-1 and for retinoblastoma (RB) protein with two polyclonal antisera in 24 parathyroid carcinomas and 35 adenomas, which were formalin fixed and paraffin embedded to determine if these antibodies could assist in distinguishing between carcinomas and adenomas.
