Postural behaviour and motion sickness.

One of the acting techniques used in Kyogen, a classical Japanese stage comedy, prompted two questions: why is it that one may suffer from motion sickness as a car passenger, but, as a driver, escape its effects? And how can one learn postural adjustment against motion sickness by repeatedly travelling in vehicles?

The relationship between limb apraxia and the spontaneous use of communicative gesture in aphasia.

This study investigated the relationship between limb apraxia, as assessed by a formal clinical test, and the production of spontaneous communicative gesture, as measured by a newly designed rating scale--the Nonvocal Communication Scale (NCS). Subjects were aphasic adult males with cerebrovascular lesions of the left hemisphere. The performance of aphasic patients on the praxis test and the NCS was independent of demographic, neuroanatomic, linguistic, or cognitive variables, except for global aphasics who were low-scoring across the board. There was a significant positive correlation, howeve

Differences in dogs' and wolves' human-directed greeting behaviour: facial expressions, body language, and the problem of human biases.

Dogs and wolves communicate effectively with humans, yet differences in their human-directed facial expressions and the role of relationship strength in shaping these behaviours remain poorly understood. This study explored the facial expressions of human-socialized wolves and dogs when greeting a bonded or familiar human through a fence. We hypothesised that differences would arise due to the domestication process, shaped further by the strength of their relationship. Additionally considering the bidirectionality integral to greeting interactions, we explored whether humans show different fac

Special report: controlling aggression in hospitals--what security officers must know to avoid physical attacks.

Threats to the safety of security officers by persons they encounter in confrontational or potentially confrontational situations are an ever-present danger. This potential for physical violence can take place in the lobby, cafeteria, halls, elevators, or the parking lot of any corporate entity, not just hospitals. In hospitals, however, this danger is compounded by psychiatric patients and other hospital patients under stress. Hospital security personnel are often called to defuse potentially violent patient situations. Further compounding this risk of violence are increases in cutbacks in ho

Speech acts and the pragmatic deficits of autism.

In a videotaped free-play session with a parent, autistic children were compared with mental-age matched Developmental Language Delay (DLD) children and with normally developing (ND) 2-year-olds in the use of communicative acts by parent and child. Groups were matched for language level. Autistic children had more incidents of no responses, produced less affirming, turn-taking vocalization, and gesture, and were less likely to initiate communication than other children. Parent groups differed only in a greater amount of initiating and use of imperatives by parents of autistic children. Few rel

Pantomime agnosia.

Visual agnosia is impaired visual recognition not explained by defective visual acuity, visual fields, attention, or general mental ability. Two nonapraxic patients with lesions in the left occipital lobe could imitate pantomimes they could not recognise. Although both patients had a hemianopia, sparing of gesture imitation shows that no visual defect accounts for their inability to recognise pantomimes. Both patients were amnestic and alexic but had no general impairment of cognitive ability to account for a pantomime-recognition disorder. These patients seem to have agnosia for pantomime. Fr

New Perspectives on Emotional Processing in People with Symptomatic Huntington's Disease: Impaired Emotion Regulation and Recognition of Emotional Body Language†.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation and emotional body language (EBL) recognition represent two fundamental components of emotional processing that have recently seen a considerable surge in research interest, in part due to the role they play in optimizing mental health. This appears to be particularly true for clinical conditions that can profoundly affect emotional functioning. Among these is Huntington's disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disorder that is associated with several psychological difficulties and cognitive impairments, including well-established deficits in facial emotion recognition

The asynchronous influence of facial expressions on bodily expressions.

The ability to extract correct emotional information from facial and bodily expressions is fundamental for the development of social skills. Previous studies have shown that bodily expressions affect the recognition of basic facial expressions dramatically. However, few studies have considered the view that facial expressions may influence the recognition of bodily expressions. Further, previous studies have failed to consider a comprehensive set of emotional categories. The present study sought to examine whether facial expressions would impact the recognition of bodily expressions asynchrono

Mapping Sub-Second Structure in Mouse Behavior.

Complex animal behaviors are likely built from simpler modules, but their systematic identification in mammals remains a significant challenge. Here we use depth imaging to show that 3D mouse pose dynamics are structured at the sub-second timescale. Computational modeling of these fast dynamics effectively describes mouse behavior as a series of reused and stereotyped modules with defined transition probabilities. We demonstrate this combined 3D imaging and machine learning method can be used to unmask potential strategies employed by the brain to adapt to the environment, to capture both pred

Conversion hysteria.

Conversion hysteria differs from hysteria in that it arises suddenly, rather than being a lifelong disorder. It is monosymptomatic rather than polysymptomatic, and is seen in men almost as frequently as in women. La belle indifférence, when present, is a useful clue to diagnosis. Other clues are ambiguity in reporting of the symptoms, medically inconsistent symptoms and hysterical personality features. Treatment may include removing the patient from a stressful environment and removing the "payoff" yielded by the illness. A confrontation with the patient is generally to be avoided.

[Anatomical and functional specialization of the cortex and the organization of gestures. An animal experimental contribution to the study of apraxia].

Apraxia has traditionally been considered the province of clinical investigation, but in recent years a series of animal studies have provided data that appear to be relevant to its interpretation. They are reviewed in the present paper with the aim to integrate and specify the classical model proposed by Liepmann, particularly as far as the roles of the inferior parietal lobe (area 40 in man and part of area 7 in the monkey) and of the motor association cortex (area 6 in man and periarcuate area in the monkey) are concerned. Monkey data suggest that the relation of the inferior parietal lobe

Huntington's disease impairs recognition of angry and instrumental body language.

Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) exhibit motor impairments as well as cognitive and emotional deficits. So far impairments in the ability to recognize emotional stimuli have mostly been investigated by using facial expressions and emotional voices. Other important emotional signals are provided by the whole body. To investigate the impact of motor deficits on body recognition and the relation between motor disorders and emotion perception deficits, we tested recognition of emotional body language (instrumental, angry, fearful and sad) in 19 HD patients and their matched controls with a

[An evaluation of the accessibility of early post-stroke comprehensive rehabilitation in Poland].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: According to the European Stroke Initiative recommendations every stroke patient should undergo rehabilitation; its program should be tailored according to the individual needs of the patient. The aim of our study was to evaluate the accessibility of comprehensive early stroke rehabilitation at neurological departments in Poland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have sent a questionnaire evaluating neurological and rehabilitation departments in Poland, where stroke patients are treated and undergo early rehabilitation. We divided them into 5 categories -- classes from A to F:

[Late-onset of idiopathic paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis: a case report].

A case of late-onset idiopathic paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis (PKC) is described herein. A 50-year-old right-handed Japanese man with no family history of neurological disease or consanguinity was referred to our neurological unit because of paroxysmal involuntary movement of his right extremities. Physical examination findings were normal. Neurological examination during the interictal period revealed no abnormality. The attacks were triggered by abrupt initiation of voluntary movement and occurred about 30 times a day, lasting 30 to 60 seconds with no disturbance of consciousness. N

An investigation of body part as object (BPO) responses in normal and brain-damaged adults.

A test of simple pantomime was administered to three groups of adults and comparisons were made across groups of the incidence of subjects who exhibited body part as object (BPO) responses and of the mean frequency of occurrence of BPO in each group. The three groups were left-hemisphere-damaged aphasics (N = 28), right-hemisphere-damaged (N = 24), and normal controls (N = 28). The results indicated no significant differences among groups on the BPO measures. Also, to test the strength of association between the frequency of occurrence of BPO and measures of limb apraxia and severity of aphasi

[Absence of signs of deconnection in four cases of partial anterior and median callosal lesions of vascular and neurosurgical origin (author's transl)].

Three cases of partial anterior and median callosal vascular lesions and one surgical case are presented. Some months later a neuropsychological examination did not show any signs of deconnection. Two interpretations are equally plausible: either the limited extension of the lesions as well as their location explain the absence of signs of deconnection, or these signs had existed but were regressive.

Balance in single-limb stance after surgically treated ankle fractures: a 14-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The maintenance of postural control is fundamental for different types of physical activity. This can be measured by having subjects stand on one leg on a force plate. Many studies assessing standing balance have previously been carried out in patients with ankle ligament injuries but not in patients with ankle fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether patients operated on because of an ankle fracture had impaired postural control compared to an uninjured age- and gender-matched control group. METHODS: Fifty-four individuals (patients) operated on because of an ankl

Electrodiagnosis of striated urethral sphincter dysfunction.

In many centers urethral striated sphincter electromyography has become an essential component of urodynamic testing. The urologist who uses this modality of investigation in an attempt to understand the pathophysiology of striated sphincter dysfunction must have some basic knowledge of electromyography. Attempts have been made to provide such basic information, especially relating to the methods of evaluation and interpretation. We also have incorporated our own views based on our experience with more than 200 subjects with neuropathic vesicourethral dysfunctions.
