Kinesiophobia in pediatric and adolescent gymnasts with acute and overuse injuries.

BACKGROUND: Gymnasts are often highly specialized and have high rates of injuries. It is unclear whether highly specialized gymnasts or those with acute versus overuse injuries have different rates of kinesiophobia after injury. OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of our study was to compare kinesiophobia ratings among gymnasts seeking medical care for acute injuries compared to overuse injuries. Secondarily, we evaluated whether kinesiophobia after gymnastics-related injury was associated with sport specialization level. We hypothesized kinesiophobia would be higher in athletes with overuse injur

The relationship of kinesiophobia in patients with lymphedema: a case-control investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Kinesiophobia and lymphedema appear to be related conditions, and it is important to understand this relationship, as many of the symptoms and comorbidities presented by individuals with lower limb lymphedema are prevented and treated through movement, thus constituting kinesiophobia as a barrier to intervention. The objective of this study is, therefore, to evaluate and analyze the kinesiophobic beliefs reported by individuals with and without lower limb lymphedema, regarding the agreement, severity and differences found, and to establish levels of kinesiophobia. METHODS: A cas

The effects of kinesiophobia on postural control with chronic ankle instability.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) often experience injury-related fear following ankle injuries, a condition known as kinesiophobia. Little research has investigated the impact of kinesiophobia in patients with CAI. RESEARCH QUESTION: How does kinesiophobia impact the static and dynamic balance of individuals with CAI? METHODS: Fifty patients with CAI were divided into 2 subgroups based on their responses to the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia: 25 with kinesiophobia (CAI-K) and 25 without kinesiophobia (CAI-N). These groups were compared to 20 control participants. All p

Strength and physical activity in osteoarthritis: The mediating role of kinesiophobia.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between muscle strength and physical activity level in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA), and determine whether this association is mediated by pain-related fear of movement (kinesiophobia) and self-reported pain. Cross-sectional data from 37 subjects (age 58.8 ± 8.6 years, 25F/12M, BMI 33.5 ± 6.4 kg/m2 ) with OA of the knee were used. Isometric knee extensor and flexor muscle strength were measured using an isokinetic dynamometer. Physical activity, kinesiophobia, and pain were assessed by self-report using the University of Californ

On what patients does the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia fit?

The Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK) has been used for a decade and is a valuable tool in researching pain-related fear. A variety of different factor models exist, however, and there are inconsistencies as to which model to use. The purpose of the study was twofold: 1) to thoroughly review existing factor models and 2) to empirically evaluate the previously proposed factor models in a large sample with persistent musculoskeletal pain. Subjects included 578 of 711 (81%) consecutive patients (aged 18-65 years) with persistent musculoskeletal pain from three different orthopedic outpatient cli

The effect of kinesiophobia on motor symptoms in individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms that impair balance, mobility, and overall physical function. Kinesiophobia, defined as the fear of movement due to pain or injury concerns, may further exacerbate these impairments by promoting activity avoidance. This study aimed to investigate the impact of kinesiophobia on motor symptoms in individuals with PD. METHODS: A total of 51 individuals diagnosed with PD were included in the study. Participants were divided into two groups-low and high kinesiophobia-based on their scores on the Tampa Scale for K

Psychometric and network analysis of kinesiophobia in Iranian surgical patients.

Kinesiophobia, the fear of movement, can significantly impede an individual's ability to engage in daily activities. This fear often stems from past traumatic experiences or witnessing others in pain, leading to an increased fear of injury. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia among Iranian post-surgery patients. A methodological study conducted in 2023 involved a sample of 400 post-surgery patients selected through convenience sampling. The translated scale underwent psychometric evaluation, including network anal

The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia for Temporomandibular Disorders (TSK-TMD).

For musculoskeletal disorders like low back pain and fibromyalgia, evidence is growing for fear of movement to play an important role in the development of chronic pain. In temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients, however, this construct has not received any attention yet. Therefore, in this paper, (1) a generally used instrument to measure fear of movement, the Dutch version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), was adapted for its use in TMD patients (and translated for equivalence to English), (2) the psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the TSK-TMD were assessed, and (3)

Kinesiophobia and Return to Sports After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is typically recommended for patients who wish to return to aggressive athletic activity. Unfortunately, reconstructive knee surgery is not a guarantee that all patients will return to their preinjury level of function. A recent meta-analysis including 48 studies showed that after a mean follow-up of 41 months, 82% of participants had returned to some kind of athletic activity but only 63% returned to their preinjury level of participation and a disappointing 44% returned to competitive sports. The reasons why some athletes have been unsuccessful
