[A case of multiple sclerosis with bilateral useless hand syndrome as a main clinical feature].

A 41-year-old, right-handed man was admitted to our hospital on September 12, 2002, due to progressive clumsiness in both hands. The patient had been diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis three years prior to admission. He noticed difficulty in manipulating objects three months before admission. Cervical T2-weighted MRI showed a high signal intensity at the level of C3-4 which was enhanced on T1-weighted image with gadolinium. On admission, neurological examinations revealed impairment of dexterity, deep sensory disturbance, and astereognosis in both hands. The clumsiness of complex finger mo

Significance of auditory and kinesthetic feedback to singers' pitch control.

An accurate control of fundamental frequency (F0) is required from singers. This control relies on auditory and kinesthetic feedback. However, a loud accompaniment may mask the auditory feedback, leaving the singers to rely on kinesthetic feedback. The object of the present study was to estimate the significance of auditory and kinesthetic feedback to pitch control in 28 students beginning a professional solo singing education. The singers sang an ascending and descending triad pattern covering their entire pitch range with and without masking noise in legato and staccato and in a slow and a f

Kinesthetic awareness in subjects with multiple ankle sprains.

The purposes of this study were 1) to determine whether decreased kinesthetic awareness occurs in individuals with recurrent ankle sprains and 2) to determine whether the one-legged standing balance test can be used to differentiate between ankle instability in injured and uninjured ankles. Thirty athletes between 18 and 24 years of age with multiple sprains of one ankle and no reported sprains of the other ankle were tested to compare their ability to detect passive plantar flexion and standing balance in each ankle. Luce's choice theory was used to analyze subjects' responses. Subjects had s

Relationship between the vividness of motor imagery and physical function in patients with subacute hemiplegic stroke: a cross-sectional preliminary study.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to clarify whether the vividness of motor imagery is related to lower limb function and walking ability in patients with hemiplegic stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional preliminary study. The subjects were 15 patients with hemiplegic stroke. The vividness of motor imagery was assessed using the kinesthetic and visual imagery questionnaire. The kinesthetic imagery (KI) involves the sensation of one's own movement, whereas the visual imagery (VI) involves the imagination of a third-person performing the self-movement. Their physical functions w

Effect of frequency of horizontal linear oscillation on motion sickness and somatogravic illusion.

BACKGROUND: Low frequency linear (translational) oscillation is an important stimulus in provoking motion sickness in a variety of modes of transport. HYPOTHESIS: Lower frequencies of horizontal linear oscillation would be more nauseogenic. The somatogravic illusion (SGI) would be affected by frequency. METHODS: Subjects (n = 12) were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (3.6 m.s-2 peak) at three different frequencies (0.205 Hz, 0.350 Hz, 0.500 Hz) at one week intervals, with order randomized between subjects. Subjects were seated in the upright position, with motion through the X head bo

The role of joint receptors in human kinaesthesia when intramuscular receptors cannot contribute.

1. Kinaesthetic acuity was tested at the distal interphalangeal joint of the middle finger when the hand was postured so that the joint was effectively disengaged from its muscular attachments. Subjects were required to detect the direction of 5 deg movements applied at different angular velocities from a mid-position under control conditions, after intra-articular injection of a plasma expander and after intra-articular injection of a local anaesthetic. 2. Kinaesthetic performance was enhanced after the injection of a plasma expander and deteriorated after injection of local anaesthetic. This

Specific Contribution of the Transversus Abdominis for Postural Control Against Perturbation Caused by Kinesthetic Illusion.

Functional independence of the transversus abdominis (TrA) from other trunk muscles for postural control is still unclear. This study aimed to clarify the specific function of the TrA to control standing posture by vibratory stimulation of the triceps surae. Fifteen men participated in this study. Muscle activity of the TrA, internal oblique, lumbar multifidus, gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior was measured using fine-wire and surface electrodes. Participants were asked to maintain a quiet standing posture with and without vibration of the tr

Processing of tactile and kinesthetic signals from bilateral sides of the body in the postcentral gyrus of awake monkeys.

Earlier studies pointed out that in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) the receptive fields (RF) of bilateral neurons were related exclusively to the body midline. We recently found a substantial number of neurons with bilateral RFs on hand digits, shoulders/arms or legs/feet in the caudalmost part (areas 2 and 5) of the postcentral gyrus in awake macaque monkeys. The RFs of these neurons were generally of the most complex types found in this region of the cortex, and thus they were considered to be at the highest level along the hierarchical chain of information processing. We conclude tha

The stationarity hypothesis: an allocentric criterion in visual perception.

Having long considered that extraretinal information plays little or no role in spatial vision, the study of structure from motion (SfM) has confounded a moving observer perceiving a stationary object with a non-moving observer perceiving a rigid object undergoing equal and opposite motion. However, recently it has been shown that extraretinal information does play an important role in the extraction of structure from motion by enhancing motion cues for objects that are stationary in an allocentric, world-fixed reference frame (Nature 409 (2001) 85). Here, we test whether stationarity per se i

Grasping at illusions: stimulating cutaneous afferents to create kinesthetic illusions.

Most evidence for the role of muscle and cutaneous receptors in kinesthesia comes from studies that induce kinesthetic illusions. Such movement illusions are created by artificially stimulating these receptors or their afferents to mimic their natural discharge. Previous research to investigate the contribution of cutaneous receptors to kinesthesia used electrical stimulation arranged in arrays across the back of the hand. In the present study, we introduce a simple technique to stimulate a cutaneous nerve at the wrist (superficial branch of radial nerve) through two electrodes and quantified

The contribution of visual and proprioceptive information to the perception of leaning in a dynamic motorcycle simulator.

Compared with driving or flight simulation, little is known about self-motion perception in riding simulation. The goal of this study was to examine whether or not continuous roll motion supports the sensation of leaning into bends in dynamic motorcycle simulation. To this end, riders were able to freely tune the visual scene and/or motorcycle simulator roll angle to find a pattern that matched their prior knowledge. Our results revealed idiosyncrasy in the combination of visual and proprioceptive information. Some subjects relied more on the visual dimension, but reported increased sickness s

Influence of vision on vibration-induced illusions of limb movement.

Illusory motion of the unseen stationary forearm can be elicited by vibration of the biceps brachii or triceps brachii muscle. We have studied in 12 individuals how sight of part of the arm alone or in relation to other objects affects such vibration-induced, illusory motion of the forearm. Our findings indicate a complex but systematic influence of vision in attenuating apparent motion of the forearm. They show, too, that the seen and felt positions of the forearm can be dissociated and that physically impossible spatial configurations of the arm can be experienced. These findings have implic

Magnitude estimation of oral cavity distances.

Adult subjects were asked to estimate relative distances between points marked on artificial palates fitted to their own palatal vaults. The artificial palates were less than 1 mm thick and extended posteriorly along the hard palate from the central incisors to approximately the second molars. Distances of 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 mm were marked on four planes on the palates, one corresponding to the alveolar ridge, one anterior and two posterior to the ridge. The subjects felt raised points on the palates with their tongues and assigned number referenced to a standard distance on the alveolar pla
