Bilateral Anterior Opercular Syndrome With Partial Kluver-Bucy Syndrome in a Stroke Patient: A Case Report.

Bilateral anterior opercular syndrome and partial Kluver-Bucy syndrome are associated with bilateral middle cerebral artery lesions. The combination of these two syndromes has only been reported in a child with limbic encephalitis. In this case, a 44-year-old woman with bilateral middle cerebral artery infarction, which occurred 2 years prior, could walk independently. However, she showed automatic-voluntary dissociation and anarthria with preserved writing skills. She also presented hypersexuality, hypermetamorphosis, and memory disturbances. Here, we report a case of an adult stroke patient

Transient Kluver-Bucy Syndrome as a Manifestation of Post-temporal Lobe Seizure: A Rare Case Entity.

Following epileptic seizures, patients can subsequently experience a post-ictal state characterized by disorienting symptoms, such as confusion, drowsiness, hypertension, headache, and nausea, rather than neurobehavioral sequelae. We report the case of a 64-year-old male with unilateral left temporal lobe injury, who presented with post-ictal transient Kluver-Bucy Syndrome symptomatology following a complex partial seizure. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed encephalomalacia of the left temporo-parieto-occipital region from a previous infarct, and his symptoms resolved following the adm

The 100 Most Cited Kluver-Bucy Research Articles: A Bibliometric Analysis.

Kluver-Bucy Syndrome (KBS) is a rare neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by hyperorality, hypersexuality, bulimia, visual agnosia, and amnesia due to lesions affecting bilateral temporal lobes. It is attributed to a multitude of causes, including stroke, herpes simplex encephalitis, Alzheimer's disease, and head trauma. Current treatments for KBS include symptomatic management with antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, carbamazepine, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The bibliometric analysis was done to reflect the relevance and understanding of KBS in recent literature. The SCOPUS

Mesiotemporal Disconnection and Hypoactivity in Klüver-Bucy Syndrome: Case Series and Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is often perceived as rare and limited to cases with bilateral amygdala destruction. In fact, various alternate mechanisms may be involved, warranting exploration of the syndrome's presentation, pathophysiology, prognosis, and management. DATA SOURCES: Clinical management and the electronic medical records were examined for 2 patients diagnosed with partial KBS (ICD-10 F07.0) after experiencing ≥ 3 of the following: placidity, indiscriminate dietary behavior, hyperorality, hypersexuality, visual agnosia, and hypermetamorphosis. A literature search was per

The Klüver-Bucy Syndrome.

In 1937, Heinrich Klüver and Paul Bucy described a dramatic behavioral syndrome in monkeys after bilateral temporal lobectomy. The full Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) - hyperorality, placidity, hypermetamorphosis, dietary changes, altered sexual behavior, and visual agnosia - is evident within 3 weeks following operation. Some KBS features (i.e., hyperorality, placidity, hypermetamorphosis) persist indefinitely, whereas others gradually resolve over several years. Klüver and Bucy were initially unaware of an earlier report of KBS by Sanger Brown and Edward Schäfer in 1888. Human cases were recogni

Clinical manifestations and morphological changes in one case with post-stroke Klüver-Bucy syndrome.

We present the case of a 71-year-old right-handed male, admitted to the Department of Neurology, Emergency County Hospital of Arad, Romania, on November 2015, with a rare case of Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS), following an ischemic stroke of the right temporal lobe, which was previously diagnosed in December 2014 and was treated accordingly. At the moment of second hospital admission, the patient was found somnolent and confused at home, with traumatic signs of biting of the tongue and urine emission. A couple days after admission, our patient became alert and presented hypersexuality, hypermetam

["Hypermetamorphosis". Heinrich Neumann's (1814-1884) legacy].

The term "hypermetamorphosis" was originally coined in 1859 by an almost forgotten psychiatrist from Breslau, now Wroclaw in Poland, Heinrich Wilhelm Neumann. The 1906 textbook of his assistant Wernicke transmitted the concept to Klüver and Bucy, who understood it as the "excessive tendency to take notice of and to attend and react to every visual stimulus" in their syndrome description of bitemporal lobectomy in the monkey (1937-1939). Hypermetamorphosis so far has not been properly operationalized, and the concept appears outdated. Components such as "compulsive manipulation", "magnet reacti

[Klüver-Bucy syndrome as the initial symptom of adult-type ceroid lipofuscinosis (Kufs' disease)].

AIMS: The purpose of this paper is to report the case of a patient with Kluver-Bucy syndrome caused by adult-type ceroid lipofuscinosis (Kufs' disease) and to review the literature dealing with the causes of this syndrome. CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old male examined because of behavioural changes and cognitive impairment. Brain biopsy findings were characteristic of adult-type ceroid lipofuscinosis. This patient fulfilled the criteria of Kufs' disease, since he had mixed clinical features belonging to both type A (neuropsychiatric disorders) and B (aphasia-apraxia-agnosia syndrome) of the diseas

[Klüver-Bucy syndrome in herpetic meningoencephalitis].

BACKGROUND: Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is an infrequent condition that includes, in its complete form, often massive amnesia, psychic blindness (so-called visual agnosia), oral tendencies, hypermetamorphosis, changes in emotional behavior and increased sexual activity. Anatomic lesions in KBS involve the temporal lobe cortex bilaterally, and the amygdala as well as temporal white matter. CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old patient treated for herpetic meningoencephalitis developed neuropsychological signs leading to the diagnosis of Klüver-Bucy syndrome. DISCUSSION: KBS can occur in various clinical

[Klüver-Bucy syndrome in humans].

The Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) was first described in 1937 as an experimental neurobehavorial syndrome in monkeys with bitemporal brain lesions. The syndrome in man was subsequently observed to be transient or permanent in a variety of neurodegenerative disorders and after traumatic, nontraumatic, and infectious brain injury. Its most common manifestations are hyperorality with changes in dietary habits, hypersexuality, and visual agnosia. Seizures are another frequent symptom. Here we describe KBS in a female inpatient aged 30 in whom KBS and psychotic symptoms occurred together.

Pleomorphism of the clinical manifestations of neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) remains a major public health problem in developing countries as it is the most common helminthic infection of the central nervous system. Clinical manifestations are non-specific and pleomorphic. Case reports on uncommon presentations of NCC are few. We report six interesting cases of NCC with unusual clinical presentation that demonstrate this spectrum of pleomorphism. These include extrapyramidal disease (parkinsonism and focal dystonia), Kluver-Bucy syndrome, Weber's syndrome, dementia and cortical blindness. The clinical details and possible mechanisms for the unc

The neuropsychology of the Klüver-Bucy syndrome in children.

The Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is characterized by a number of peculiar behavioral symptoms. The syndrome was first observed in 1939 by Heinrich Klüver and Paul Bucy in the rhesus monkey following removal of the greater portion of the monkey's temporal lobes and rhinencephalon. The animal showed (a) visual agnosia (inability to recognize objects without general loss of visual discrimination), (b) excessive oral tendency (oral exploration of objects), (c) hypermetamorphosis (excessive visual attentiveness), (d) placidity with loss of normal fear and anger responses, (e) altered sexual behavior

Partial Klüver-Bucy syndrome in a Paediatric patient: A post-neurosurgical and neuropsychological cases.

A variety of cognitive, behavioural, and emotional impairments have been reported in the literature that are associated with the resection of the temporal cortex. Klüver-Bucy syndrome is one infrequently reported disorder in the paediatric population. This paper describes the neuropsychological findings of a female paediatric patient at 7 and 10 years of age with a diagnosis of partial Klüver-Bucy syndrome (pKBS) following total resection of the amygdala and right hippocampus to resect a glioma. The patient presented emotional problems, aggressiveness, hypermetamorphosis, social indifference,

Unusual complication of Herpes simplex encephalitis: complete Klüver-Bucy syndrome.

Klüver-Bucy syndrome is a rare neurobehavioral disorder caused by a bilateral temporal lobe lesion affecting the hippocampus and amygdala; clinically characterised by hyperorality, hypermetamorphosis, placidity, altered sexual behaviour, eating, disorders and visual impairment, agnosia and amnesia. However, the complete syndrome is rarely seen, and diagnosis does not require all the symptoms to be manifested simultaneously. We describe a patient who developed a complete Klüver-Bucy syndrome secondary to bilateral temporal involvement due to herpetic encephalitis.

Rett syndrome--natural history in 70 cases.

We evaluated, at our institute, 70 females with Rett syndrome between 2 1/2 to 34 1/2 years old. This provided an opportunity of observing the natural history of this condition. The evolution of a subacute encephalopathy of very early onset, maximizing in the second year of life, with slow recovery and devastating sequelae, was recognized. The hyperorality, visual auditory and tactile agnosia with aphasia and seizures resembled symptoms described in human Kluver Bucy syndrome. Over interpretation of behavioral abnormalities as seizures was common. Scoliosis was not a necessary concomitant of a

Clinical spectrum, pitfalls in diagnosis and therapeutic implications in herpes simplex encephalitis.

OBJECTIVES: High index of suspicion is mandatory for early diagnosis of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis (HSE), since acyclovir therapy can prevent its mortality and limit morbidity. We report our observations on clinical spectrum, pitfalls in diagnosis and therapeutic aspects in patients of HSE. METHODS: There were 34 patients of HSE (26 males and eight females) in age range 6 -72 (mean 23.8 +/- 8.9) years. Diagnosis was confirmed by cranial MRI, EEG and PCR in CSF. Acyclovir was given to 24 patients. Carbamazepine and sodium valproate were the antiepileptic drugs used. RESULTS: Most of the pati

Infantile autism and the temporal lobe of the brain.

Studies are reviewed that support the hypothesis that infantile autism results from a neuropathology of the temporal lobes of the brain. First, there are parallels between symptoms noted in autism and those found in the Kluver-Bucy and amnesic syndromes. Second, there is a similarity between developmental dysphasia and autism. Third, the formation of cross-modal associations may be deficient in autistic children, a symptom resembling aspects of Geschwind's disconnection syndromes. Finally, a large number of organic factors have been associated with the development of autism, some of these havi

Klüver Bucy syndrome, unusual consequence of excessively rapid correction of severe hyponatremia.

INTRODUCTION: Features of Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) include hypersexuality, hyperorality, placidity, visual agnosia, amnesia, hypermetamorphosis, and emotional and nutritional behavior changes. It is a clinical presentation of bitemporal disorders with limbic system abnormalities. The most common cause of KBS is herpes encephalitis. CASE DESCRIPTION: An otherwise healthy 61-year-old woman presented with mental status changes (MMSE-0) after 6 days of severe vomiting. Extracellular dehydration, hyponatremia (107 mmol/L), low levels of natriuresis, and mild hypokalemia were noted. The initial c
