Balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) is a standardized, minimally invasive procedure for treating osteoporotic vertebral fractures. However, secondary osteoporotic vertebral fractures following BKP are uncommon in clinical practice, and there is limited published experience with revision BKP for this condition. An 82-year-old man presented to our clinic with back pain after a fall. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an osteoporotic L5 vertebral fracture. As conservative treatment was unsuccessful, he underwent BKP for the L5 fracture, which alleviated his pain. Twenty days post-o

PURPOSE: This paper aims to compare vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty by illustrating the two techniques, analysing the results and discussing the indications in relation to the type of fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Vertebroplasty was performed on 805 vertebral bodies in 485 patients affected by osteoporosis (310), metastasis (160) and vertebral haemangioma (15). The approach was unipedicular in 365 patients and bipedicular in 120 patients. Biopsies were obtained in patients with no known primary cancer (75). Kyphoplasty was performed in 39 patients with Magerl type A1 and A3 fractures within

UNLABELLED: Prevalence of vertebral compression fractures is over 30 % in the elderly population. The ideal treatment for these fractures remains a subject of debate. The objective in this study is to compare the clinical outcomes of early kyphoplasty and conservative treatment in vertebral compression fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational retrospective study of 50 consecutive patients with acute vertebral compression fracture (25 patients treated by kyphoplasty and 25 treated by conservative therapy). Number and location of the fractures, radiographic assessment (Beck Index), sympt

BACKGROUND: Despite optimal drug-conservative therapy, a relevant percentage of patients with vertebral compression fractures (WKF) do not experience any relevant improvement in their pain symptoms. Vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP) are described in the literature as percutaneous interventional procedures for the treatment of WKF.
OBJECTIVE: Assessment of the effectiveness of the VP and KP in the treatment of WKF and discussion of the procedures in the context of the current literature.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Presentation of the fundamentals of VP and KP and their further developments.

The aim of this review is to compare the effectiveness of percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty to treat pain and improve functional outcome from vertebral fractures secondary to osteoporosis and tumor conditions. In 2009, two open randomized controlled trials published in the New England Journal of Medicine questioned the value of vertebroplasty in treating vertebral compression fractures. Nevertheless, the practice of physicians treating these conditions has barely changed. The objective of this review is to try to clarify the most important issues, based on our own experience and the

Vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP) have been proven equally effective in providing pain relief in patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCF). Both have been reported to have multiple complications which, though rare, are potentially devastating. This literature review focuses on comparing the incidence of various types of complication of VP and KP. Local cement leakage and pulmonary cement embolism have been reported more commonly after VP than KP. It is questionable whether the relative risk of developing an adjacent level new fracture after VP is greater than after KP The rela

INTRODUCTION: Vertebral fractures (VF) are a leading cause of morbidity in the elderly. In the past decade, minimally invasive bone augmentation techniques for VF, such as percutaneous vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP) have become more widespread. According to the literature, both techniques provide significant pain relief. However, KP is more expensive and technically more demanding than VP. The current study surveyed German surgeons who practice percutaneous augmentation to evaluate and compare decisions regarding the implementation of these techniques. Is there a difference in the in

The peripheral cortex of a vertebral body affected by Kümmell's disease is not always intact, resulting in high risk for cement leakage. This study used modified techniques to avoid cement extravasation and dislodgment and investigated the feasibility and efficacy of kyphoplasty for treatment of Kümmell's disease. Between May 2006 and May 2008, 21 consecutive patients with Kümmell's disease underwent kyphoplasty with modified techniques. Each patient was assessed preoperatively with standard examinations and imaged with dynamic radiographs, 3-dimensional computed tomography scans, and magnetic

Two different minimally invasive percutaneous vertebral augmentation methods for cement application into the vertebral body for the management of symptomatic compression fractures without neurologic impairment have been developed, namely, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. In vertebroplasty, polymethylmethacrylate cement is injected percutaneously into a collapsed vertebral body. Kyphoplasty involves placing an inflatable bone tamp percutaneously into a vertebral body. The inflation of the bone tamp with fluid allows restoration of vertebral height and correction of the kyphosis. After deflation,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pathologic fractures of the spine are extremely painful and cause significant disability and morbidity in patients suffering from metastatic cancer. Often, these patients are not candidates for open surgical procedures and cannot address mechanical instability and radiation therapy can take weeks to become effective. Minimally invasive surgical techniques have been developed over the past several years, offering a simple and effective way of managing painful pathologic fractures.
RECENT FINDINGS: Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty offer patients a minimally invasive, percutaneo

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are percutaneous techniques developed over the past 20 years to treat vertebral hemangiomas, osteoporotic compression fractures, and osteolytic tumors of the spine. In carefully selected patients, these procedures have led to the cessation or significant reduction in pain in 80 to 90% of patients. In this article, we review the indications and contraindications of these procedures, appropriate patient selection and evaluation, the technique, outcomes, and the potential complications of this form of therapy when performed for the alleviation of pain for osteolytic

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The management of tumors of the C2 body remains controversial. In cancer patients, major procedures may be contraindicated, and nonoperative treatment could fail.
PURPOSE: To describe a new surgical technique, the transoral kyphoplasty, that we performed in 3 cases of tumors in C2 after nonoperative treatment failure.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series of three patients.
PATIENT SAMPLE: Three patients from the senior author's practice.
OUTCOME MEASURES: To reduce pain and avoid both C2 collapse and prolonged immobilization, transoral kyphoplasties were performed.
METHODS: From

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Kyphoplasty is a means of treatment for painful osteoporotic vertebral body compression fractures. Its efficacy has not yet been totally proven. Even though the conventional percutaneous kyphoplasty is a relatively safe procedure, it is not routinely recommended for use in vertebral body fractures that involve posterior cortical compromise/retropulsion or in fractures associated with neurological deficit.
PURPOSE: To see whether the open kyphoplasty procedure can be used in patients with painful vertebral body compression fractures who also have bony retropulsion into the

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort analysis.
PURPOSE: Comparison of balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) and radiofrequency kyphoplasty (RFK) with respect to height restoration of the fractured vertebral bodies and the pain relief experienced after the surgical procedure.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: BKP and RFK both offer safe, time-saving, and potent treatment options for vertebral compression fractures, but neither of these methods demonstrated any key advantage over the other yet.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of a cohort of 156 patients (mean age, 73±11 years) with 252 fractured verte

BACKGROUND: An osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture is a common condition in elderly people, especially women. The percutaneous kyphoplasty is an effective treatment for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Controversy remains regarding whether a unilateral or a bilateral approach is superior, and to our knowledge, there have been no large studies comparing these two approaches, therefore a meta-analysis synthesizing the data on this question is warranted.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked the following questions: (1) Is there evidence to suggest a benefit in clinical outcome as as

Cement extravasation can occur during vertebral body augmentation such as kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty with diverse presentation and resultant treatment. The cement can embolize through venous vasculature to the thorax where it poses a potential threat to the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. A thorough risk-benefit analysis should be conducted to select the appropriate treatment course. We present an asymptomatic case of cement extravasation to the heart and lungs during kyphoplasty.
