The relationship between red blood cell sorbitol content and diabetic complications (cataract, retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy) was examined in 23 non-insulin-dependent diabetic (NIDD) patients. Sorbitol content was abnormally high in 21 cases out of 23 NIDD patients. Sorbitol content in the non-neuropathy group and neuropathy group was 47.3 +/- 11.9 and 59.6 +/- 23.6 nmol/gHb, respectively. Using the local strains of Schistosoma bovis and Fasciola gigantica, it was shown that Sudanese zebu calves with mature primary infections of F. gigantica were highly resistant to challenge with S. bovis cercariae, and vice versa. Liver enzyme tests showed that, in both cases, the primary infections had caused some liver damage. Primary infection with irradiated S. bovis cercariae, which did not cause significant liver damage, did not protect significantly against challenge with F. gigantica.

Haemoglobin, packed-cell volume and serum sorbitol dehydrogenase activity were studied in 8 groups of 3 Corriedale weaner wethers artificially infected with a range of fluke burdens. Data from haemoglobin and packed-cell volume measurements were analysed using regression procedures. Some of the many enzymes found in hepatocytes can be measured in the serum and are used as tests of liver function. We now review the current knowledge of their physiology and pathophysiology and outline their clinical usefulness. We divide them into two categories: enzymes that primarily reflect cholestasis, such as the alkaline phosphatase, the 5'-nucleotidase, and the gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, and those that primarily reflect hepatocellular necrosis, such as the aminotransferases. We also briefly discuss several enzymes of more limited usefulness.

Fasciola gigantica infection in sheep produced liver and lung lesions characterized by damage to blood vessels and parenchymal necrosis. In the lungs, the lesions were those of parasitic bronchopneumonia. The damage to the liver and lung tissues was accompanied by increased activity in serum of AST after 2 weeks, GD and SD after 4 to 5 weeks and GGT and 5'-NT from 8 weeks onwards. Bilirubin concentration was not affected.

In the present work, the effect of exposure to cigarette smoke on male fertility in rats, as characterized by changes in the relative weight of sex organs, epididymal sperm count, activity of marker enzymes and DNA damage was evaluated. Exposure of rats to cigarette smoke caused a gradual decrease in total body weight gain and relative weight of the epididymis and seminal vesicles by 30 and 40% respectively. Results of 5-year periodic examinations and SDH, LAP and GGTP activity in blood serum of 207 workers chronically exposed to ethyl gasoline and other petroleum products were analysed. In addition, in the selected groups, the levels of IgA, IgG and IgM immunoglobulins, complement C3 fraction and alpha2 macroglobulins were determined. Results of objective and enzymatic examinations indicate a slight toxic liver lesion. No significant changes in albuminous fractions were found, except a significant reduction in alpha2 macroglobulins.

This study aimed at investigating the expression and localization of the polyol pathway enzymes; aldose reductase (AR) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), in the male reproductive tract of rat. Micromethods designed for studying the sorbitol shunt permitted studies of the retina and the optic nerve from mice. A significant accumulation of sorbitol was found in the retina of 5-months-old obese-hyper-glycaemic and severely STZ diabetic mice. The latter mice also showed increased sorbitol concentrations in the optic nerve. The activities of aldose reductase were about 3 times higher in the optic nerve than in the retina.
