Successful bone augmentation relies on primary wound closure. The labial frenum is a soft tissue that connects the lip to the alveolar mucosa or gingiva. However, the frenum may exert biomechanical forces to the wound edge, causing wound instability. The aim of this study is to review the frenum composition and classifications and to understand the significance of the frenum in wound stability upon bone regeneration. Together with a manual search, an electronic search was conducted through three online databases on studies published until September 2022. A total of 300 articles were identified

During or after the orthodontic closure, persistent diastemas are frequently the result of a high frenum attachment. A labial frenectomy is a complete removal of the frenum attachment, which typically attaches to the space between the upper two anterior teeth and the centre of the upper lip. It might be required if there is space between the teeth due to a frenulum positioned too high on the gums. Many surgical technique modifications, including Miller's technique, Z-plasty, and V-Y-plasty, have been established since the conventional classical frenectomy procedure was initially presented to c

Median maxillary labial frenum (MMLF) is one of the oral freni, found on the inner side of the centre of the upper lip. Maxillary midline diastema (MMD) is commonly associated with highly attached frenum, and frenectomy during early mixed dentition is controversial. A 6-year-old boy came with a chief complaint of unpleasant spacing between the two upper front teeth. A median maxillary high attached labial frenum with midline spacing of 5 mm was diagnosed. A consensus was made with the child's father to remove the frenum by laser. Diode laser frenectomy was done, and subsequent follow-up for 12

Median cleft lip is usually divided into true and false when being discussed. Owing to recent developments of diagnostic imaging methods that have improved the accuracy, the presence of an intermediate type of median cleft lip, which cannot simply be divided into true and false, has been suggested. However, the simple method of classification is still clinically valuable. We have previously reported in this Journal a case of median cleft lip with 2 upper labial frenums. In the present study, based on our experience with false median cleft lip, we set forth a hypothesis that 2 upper labial fren

The frenum is a mucous membrane fold that connects the lip and cheek to the gingiva, periosteum, and alveolar mucosa. When the frena are linked too closely to the gingival border, there may be issues with plaque removal, and the overall gingiva may be affected. In addition, the maxillary frenum may provide aesthetic difficulties or interfere with the aesthetic outcome in cases of midline diastema, which may result in a recurrence after treatment. A labial frenectomy, a frequently performed surgical operation in the specialty of dentistry, is used to address such an abnormal frenum. This articl

The maxillary labial frenum is a normal anatomical structure in the oral cavity. An abnormal labial frenum causes localized gingival recession and midline diastema, both of which can interfere with oral hygiene procedures, and eventually affect esthetics. When the frenum maintains its high papillary attachment, frenectomy is the treatment of choice. Though this technique has undergone many modifications, the zone of attachment and esthetics in the anterior maxillary region have been neglected. This article highlights a new frenectomy technique that results in good esthetics, excellent color ma

The upper lip of 17 consecutive individuals with various forms of holoprosencephaly were examined either at autopsy or during clinical evaluation. A total of 88% of cases were missing the superior labial frenulum regardless of the severity of holoprosencephaly or other associated craniofacial defects. Because the frenulum was found to be missing across a complete clinical spectrum of holoprosencephaly including cases exhibiting only minimal craniofacial features, it should be inspected as part of the craniofacial examination, and its absence should be prompt imaging studies of the brain. BACKGROUND: Upper lip tie (ULT) articles have been recorded in Medline since 1998, while "labial frenum" articles have been recorded since 1946.
OBJECTIVE: to study the existing medical literature on ULT (or labial frenum or fraenum) as they relate to breastfeeding.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medline search engine was used to determine and subsequently retrieve all articles published on ULT from 1946 to 2018. Key-words of upper lip tie OR labial frenum were used for the search. We also used Google Scholar and Embase to widen our search, and used the PRISMA criteria for systematic reviews (SRs).

INTRODUCTION: A torn labial frenum is widely regarded as pathognomonic of abuse.
METHODS: We systematically reviewed the evidence for this, and to define other intra-oral injuries found in physical abuse. Nine studies documented abusive torn labial frena in 27 children and 24 [corrected] were fatally abused: 22 were less than 5 years old. Only a direct blow to the face was substantiated as a mechanism of injury.
RESULTS: Two studies noted accidentally torn labial frena, both from intubation. Abusive intra-oral injuries were widely distributed to the lips, gums, tongue and palate and included

An aberrant frenum causes gingival recession either due to an interference in the plaque control or due to a muscle pull. It also presents an aesthetic problem and may compromise the orthodontic result in midline diastema cases, thus causing a recurrence after the treatment. The management of such an aberrant frenum is accomplished by performing a frenectomy. The present case report shows the removal of the abnormal maxillary labial frenum in a 26-year-old male patient and an 18-year-old female patient through the Z-plasty technique.

BACKGROUND: Muscles converge or intertweave around the perioral area, and this can be treated with sequential therapy in infants with cleft lip and palate (CLP). The force of perioral muscles has a great influence on maxillary development and morphology. Perioral force in infants with CLP has not been well studied, and accurate and reliable measurement of perioral force in infants remains a challenge. This study aimed to investigate a new way to accurately and reliably measure perioral force in infants with unilateral CLP (UCLP) and explore the change before and after cheiloplasty.

The frenum, a fold of mucous membrane, connects the lip and cheek to the alveolar mucosa, gingiva, and underlying periosteum. When the frenum is positioned excessively near the gingival margin, it has the potential to compromise gingival health, impeding plaque control efforts and inducing muscular stress. A frenectomy is a commonly employed corrective measure for anomalous frenum attachments. In a recent clinical case, a 21-year-old female patient was referred from the Department of Orthodontics to the Department of Periodontics due to a papillary-type aberrant labial frenum attachment and ex

The alveolar mucous membrane, the gingiva, and the underlying bone are fixed to the lip and cheek by the frenum, a fold in the mucous membrane. The surgical process known as a frenectomy involves completely removing the frenum that connects it to the bone. Traditional frenectomy involves using a blade, while a more recent technique is frenectomy assisted by a laser. When the frenum has an atypical connection, a labial or lingual frenectomy is performed. In this instance, there is an abnormal frequency of attachment, which puts the patient's appearance, causing midline diastema and plaque contr

The upper lip frenulum with an overgrown structure or improper attachment is a common cause of hygienic, orthodontic, or prosthetic issues that prompt surgical intervention. The following article presents the surgical methods for the elimination of the overgrown frenulum, discussing and comparing them. Commonly used and described in the literature methods for surgical correction of the upper lip frenulum include frenulectomy, frenuloplasty, and laser excision of the frenulum. The article presents, discusses, and compares the methods of surgical correction of the upper lip frenulum, highlightin

The frenum is a mucosal fold that attaches the lips or cheeks to the alveolar mucosa, gingiva, and underlying periosteum. Consequences of an abnormal frenal attachment include gingival recession, decreased vestibular depth, decreased range of lip movement, and involvement of interdental papilla, causing a diastema. Several methods to eliminate ectopic frenal attachments have been suggested, including frenectomy (elimination) and frenotomy (repositioning). This case report describes the use of a modified frenectomy technique in a 15-year-old girl with excess gingiva between the maxillary centra
