Lobomycosis in man and lobomycosis-like disease in bottlenose dolphin, Venezuela.

We report 1 case of lobomycosis caused by Lacazia loboi in a fisherman and 1 case of lobomycosis-like disease in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) along the coast of Venezuela. These findings suggest that the marine environment is a likely habitat for L. loboi and a reservoir for infection.

Epidemiologic and Clinical Progression of Lobomycosis among Kaiabi Indians, Brazil, 1965-2019.

Lobomycosis is a rare granulomatous skin disease with a high prevalence in the Amazon region. The Kaiabi Indians are an especially affected group. We studied the current epidemiologic and clinical progression of lobomycosis among the Kaiabi in Brazil, from initial case reports in 1965 through 2019. A total of 60 lobomycosis cases had been reported among the Kaiabi, and we identified 3 new cases in our review. Of 550 cases of lobomycosis ever reported worldwide, 11.5% were among the Kaiabi. We note a high incidence among female Kaiabi and a precocious onset of disease in this indigenous populat

Exfoliative cytology as a rapid diagnostic tool for lobomycosis.

Lobomycosis is a common subcutaneous mycosis in South America. It is caused by Lacazia loboi. We report two cases of lobomycosis which were diagnosed by exfoliative cytology without any special staining. We highlight this diagnostic tool as a simple, low-cost, painless, non-invasive and fast method for the diagnosis of lobomycosis.

The cytotoxic T cells may contribute to the in situ immune response in Jorge Lobo's Disease human lesions.

Jorge Lobo's Disease (JLD) is a cutaneous chronic granulomatous disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Lacazia loboi. It is characterized by a granulomatous reaction with multinucleated giant cells and high number of fungal cells. In order to contribute to the comprehension of immune mechanisms in JLD human lesions, we studied the cytotoxic immune response, focusing on TCD8+ and NK cells, and granzyme B. Forty skin biopsies of lower limbs were selected and an immunohistochemistry protocol was developed to detect CD8+ T cells, NK cells and Granzyme B. In order to compare the cellular populatio

Jorge Lobo's disease: immunohistochemical characterization of dendritic cells in cutaneous lesions.

BACKGROUND: Jorge Lobo's disease (JLD) is a cutaneous chronic mycosis caused by Lacazia loboi. We studied Factor XIIIa + dermal dendrocytes (FXIIIa + DD), Langerhans cells (LC) through the expression of langerin and the expression of S100 protein. METHODS: A total of 41 biopsies and 10 normal skins (control) were developed with a polymer-based immunohistochemical method. RESULTS: Lesions presented infiltrate comprising macrophages, some asteroid corpuscles, lymphocytes, multinucleated giant cells and a large number of fungi. LCs presented short dendrites and were scarcely distributed. Dermal

Lobomycosis.

A case of lobomycosis in a patient from the Brazilian Amazon region is presented. Lobomycosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by the yeast Lacazia loboi. It often affects adult males and has been reported in dolphins. Therapeutical options for localized lesions, such as the ones shown by the patient in this report, are eletrocoagulation, surgical exeresis, and cryotherapy. Disseminated lesions may be treated with Itraconazole or combination therapy with Clofazimine. There is still no curative therapy for disseminated lesions of lobomycosis.

Jorge Lobo's disease with malignant degeneration to squamous cell carcinoma: case report.

Jorge Lobo's disease (JLD) is a chronic, granulomatous fungal infection caused by the traumatic implantation of the fungus Lacazia loboi in the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues, with the presence of isolated nodular and coalescent keloidal lesions. Malignant degeneration is rare. This case report describes a 64-year-old male patient with JLD for 30-years who showed a change in the aspect of a lesion in the left lower limb. Histopathological examination confirmed the progression to well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SSC). JLD is highly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions,

Lobomycosis: risk of zoonotic transmission from dolphins to humans.

Lobomycosis, a fungal disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissues caused by Lacazia loboi, is sometimes referred to as a zoonotic disease because it affects only specific delphinidae and humans; however, the evidence that it can be transferred directly to humans from dolphins is weak. Dolphins have also been postulated to be responsible for an apparent geographic expansion of the disease in humans. Morphological and molecular differences between the human and dolphin organisms, differences in geographic distribution of the diseases between dolphins and humans, the existence of only a single d

Lacaziosis - unusual clinical presentation.

Lacaziosis or Jorge Lobo's disease is a fungal, granulomatous, chronic infectious disease caused by Lacazia loboi, which usually affects the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It is characterized by slow evolution and a variety of cutaneous manifestations with the most common clinical expression being nodular keloid lesions that predominate in exposed areas. We report the case of a patient who had an unusual clinical presentation, with a single-plated lesion on the back. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of Lacaziosis.

A case of stranded Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) with lobomycosis-like skin lesions in Kinko-wan, Kagoshima, Japan.

Lobomycosis is a chronic fungal disease caused by the etiologic agent, Lacazia loboi, in the skin and subcutaneous tissues in humans and dolphins in tropical and transitional tropical climates. An Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) stranded in Kagoshima, Japan, had severe skin lesions characterized by granulomatous reactions and hyperkeratosis that were similar to those of the lobomycosis, but no fungal organism was observed in the skin lesion. In this paper, we report a stranded Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin with lobomycosis-like lesions based on pathological examinations in

Jorge Lobo's disease.

Jorge Lobo's Disease is a rare, chronic granulomatous cutaneous mycosis, which is typical of tropical and subtropical regions. It is caused by the traumatic implantation of the fungus Lacazia loboi into the skin and subcutaneous tissue. The disease was first described in 1931 by Jorge Lobo, in Recife (PE), Brazil. It is common in Central and South America, and predominates in the Amazon region. We report a case of Jorge Lobo's Disease, which had been initially referred as being paracoccidioidomycosis. We emphasize clinical and diagnostic features of the disease.

Lobomycosis.

Lobomycosis is a rare chronic fungal infection of the subcutaneous tissue found in South America, mainly in Brazil. It is caused by Lacazia loboi. Its clinical manifestations are dermal nodules, either lenticular or in plaques, and keloidlike lesions that can resemble nodular leprosy or leishmaniasis, other subcutaneous mycoses (sporotrychosis, chromomycosis, paracoccidioidomycosis), keloids, and malignant tumors. Diagnosis is made by the histopathological findings of the fungus. For treatment, surgical removal of the lesions, followed by itraconazole and clofazimine for disseminated lesions,

Jorge Lobo's disease with restricted labial presentation.

Jorge Lobo's Disease (JLD) is a chronic granulomatous cutaneous mycosis caused by Lacazia loboi. The most typical lesions are keloid-like growths preferentially located on limbs and ears. To the best of the authors' knowledge, only one labial case has previously been reported. We describe the case of a man who presented with a left-sided papulonodular lesion of 10 years' duration on the vermillion border of the upper lip. A successful surgical resection of the lesion was performed and there was no recurrence in eight years of follow-up.

[Sucessful treatment with clofazimine and itraconazole in a 46 year old patient after 32 years duration of disease].

Lobomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Lacazia loboi, is a chronic deep mycosis and is only found in Central and South America. Clinically the disease is characterized by shiny keloidal nodules appearing mainly on the exposed parts such as face and the upper and lower extremities. Therapeutically the surgical removal of the lesions is considered as the only successful treatment. We describe the therapeutic response of a patient with Lobo's disease treated for one year with a combination of clofazimine (100 mg/day) and itraconazole (100 mg/day). A complete clinical and histopathological rem

An atypical keloid in a Brazilian man.

Case report from French Guiana of an atypical keloid in a Brazilian man: Lobomycosis. Lobomycosis is a rare fungal skin infection, endemic to the Amazon basin. Its clinical manifestations are slow-growing keloid-like nodules, with a granulomatous reaction on histopathology. The etiological agent, Lacazia loboi, has never been isolated in the environment or cultured in a laboratory. Diagnosis is based on the typical appearance on microscopy. Treatment is disappointing, with a high recurrence rate. We report a new case in French Guiana and review the literature. Only 10 cases have been reported

Lobomycosis in Venezuela.

Lobomycosis is a chronic dermal infection that presents a wide spectrum of clinical- dermatological manifestations, mainly characterized by the development of keloid lesions as well as nodular, verrucoid and sometimes ulcerous forms. The etiological agent at an international level, according to the consensus nomenclature, has been called Loboa loboi, even though recently it has been accommodated as Lacazia loboi. The present review extensively covers the clinical-epidemiological aspects as well as the most outstanding historical aspects, including the Venezuelan experience and the presentation

Lobomycosis: a therapeutic challenge.

Lobomycosis or lacaziosis is a chronic granulomatous fungal infection caused by Lacazia loboi. Most cases are restricted to tropical regions. Transmission is believed to occur through traumatic inoculation in the skin, mainly in exposed areas. It is characterized by keloid-like nodules. There are only a few hundred cases reported. The differential diagnoses include many skin conditions, and treatment is difficult. The reported case, initially diagnosed as keloid, proved to be refractory to surgical treatment alone. It was subsequently approached with extensive surgery, cryotherapy every three
