Fecal microbiota transplantation promotes hair growth through gut microbiome and metabolic regulation.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota plays a role in the etiology of a number of skin illnesses. In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between intestinal flora (and related metabolites) and Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA). METHODS: Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was used to explore the causal relationship between gut microbiota and AGA. Gut microbiota was detected by fecal 16S rRNA sequencing, and fecal metabolites were analyzed by non-targeted metabolomics. Senescence and inflammation levels in the colon and hair follicles of mice were detected by β-galactosidase assay kits and othe

Multifactorial inhibition of Candida albicans by combinations of lactobacilli and probiotic Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856.

Strategies against the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans based on probiotic microorganisms represent a promising alternative to traditional antifungals. Here, we investigated the effects of Lactobacillaceae isolates from fermented foods or the human vagina, alone or in combination with the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856, against C. albicans in vitro. Nine out of nineteen tested strains of Lactobacillaceae inhibited growth of C. albicans with inhibition zones of 1-3 mm in spot assays. Five out of nineteen lactobacilli tested as such or in combination with S. c

Vaginal microbiomes show ethnic evolutionary dynamics and positive selection of Lactobacillus adhesins driven by a long-term niche-specific process.

The vaginal microbiome's composition varies among ethnicities. However, the evolutionary landscape of the vaginal microbiome in the multi-ethnic context remains understudied. We perform a systematic evolutionary analysis of 351 vaginal microbiome samples from 35 multi-ethnic pregnant women, in addition to two validation cohorts, totaling 462 samples from 90 women. Microbiome alpha diversity and community state dynamics show strong ethnic signatures. Lactobacillaceae have a higher ratio of non-synonymous to synonymous polymorphism and lower nucleotide diversity than non-Lactobacillaceae in all

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria by broth microdilution method and Etest.

We applied two methods of broth microdilution and Etest for measuring minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria for 15 antimicrobial agents to compare the feasibility, reproducibility, and equivalence of the two methods. Both methods were originally described by the European projects PROSAFE and ACE-ART. In 84% combinations of strains and antimicrobial agents MIC differences between the two methods were within one Log(2) dilution. In the case of rifampicin the difference between the two methods was more than ten-fold. We further determined MICs of 70 str

Curcumin-driven reprogramming of the gut microbiota and metabolome ameliorates motor deficits and neuroinflammation in a mouse model of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder, accompanied by motor deficits as well as gastrointestinal dysfunctions. Recent studies have proved that the disturbance of gut microbiota and metabolism contributes to the pathogenesis of PD; however, the mechanisms underlying these effects have yet to be elucidated. Curcumin (CUR) has been reported to provide neuroprotective effects on neurological disorders and modulate the gut flora in intestinal-related diseases. Therefore, it is of significant interest to investigate whether CUR could exert a protective effect on

Vitamin D and gut microbiome in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of vitamin D deficiency among pregnant women remains high and is associated with vitamin D deficiency in infants. In normally breastfed infants, Bifidobacteriaceae and Lactobacillaceae are known to help in maintaining immunotolerance and prevent infection. Vitamin D in the gastrointestinal tract plays a role in determining the composition and function of intestinal bacteria. Preterm infants are vulnerable to intestinal dysbiosis and sepsis due to bacterial translocation. This study aimed to determine the association between vitamin D levels and intestinal dysbiosis.

Pangenome-based design of strain-specific primers enables precise monitoring of bacteria in human microbiome intervention trials.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which include many well-known beneficial bacteria, are widely used in food fermentation, biotechnology, and probiotic formulations. Within this group, strains of Lactobacillaceae are particularly well studied. However, accurate monitoring of the survival and persistence of individual strains across different niches remains challenging due to the limited availability of strain-specific detection tools. This study introduces a robust pangenome-based approach to identify unique genetic targets for the development of strain-specific primers. Using this approach, selecti

Total parenteral nutrition impairs glucose metabolism by modifying the gut microbiome.

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) can lead to complications, such as glucose metabolism disorders. While TPN is associated with impairments in intestinal function, the gut barrier and mucosal immunity, the relationship between the gut microbiome and TPN-related glucose metabolism disorders remains to be explored. In a cohort of 256 participants with type 2 intestinal failure, we show that parenteral nutrition providing >80% of total energy induces insulin resistance and a higher risk of complications. Using various male mouse models, we demonstrate that changes in Lactobacillaceae and indole-3-

Causal relationship between gut microbiota and ankylosing spondylitis and potential mediating role of inflammatory cytokines: A mendelian randomization study.

Associations between gut microbiota and ankylosing spondylitis have been discovered in previous studies, but whether these associations reflect a causal relationship remains inconclusive. Aiming to reveal the bidirectional causal associations between gut microbiota and ankylosing spondylitis, we utilized publicly available genome wide association study summary data for 211 gut microbiota (GM) taxa and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) to conduct two sample mendelian randomization analyses. Mediation analysis was performed to explore mediating inflammatory cytokines. We found that genetically predict

Gut microbiota of Brazilian Melipona stingless bees: dominant members and their localization in different gut regions.

The gut microbiome of eusocial corbiculate bees, which include honeybees, bumblebees, and stingless bees, consists of anciently associated, host-specific bacteria that are vital for bee health. Two symbionts, Snodgrassella and Gilliamella, are ubiquitous in honeybees and bumblebees. However, their presence varies in the stingless bee clade (Meliponini), a group with pantropical distribution. They are absent or rare in the diverse genus Melipona, indicating a shift in microbiota composition in this lineage. To identify the main members of the Melipona microbiota, we combined newly collected and

Phenotypic and Safety Assessment of the Cheese Strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LL441, and Sequence Analysis of its Complete Genome and Plasmidome.

This work describes the phenotypic typing and complete genome analysis of LL441, a dairy Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strain. LL441 utilized a large range of carbohydrates and showed strong activity of some carbohydrate-degrading enzymes. The strain grew slowly in milk and produced acids and ketones along with other volatile compounds. The genome of LL441 included eight circular molecules, the bacterial chromosome, and seven plasmids (pLL441-1 through pLL441-7), ranging in size from 8.7 to 53.3 kbp. Genome analysis revealed vast arrays of genes involved in carbohydrate utilization and flavor

Differentially expressed genes in adipose tissues of high body weight-selected (obese) and unselected (lean) mouse lines.

BACKGROUND: High myopia has become a major cause of blindness worldwide and can contribute to emotional deficits through its impact on the central nervous system. The potential crosstalk with gut microbiome positions high myopia as a valuable model for studying the eye-brain-gut axis, highlighting the intricate interplay between visual health, neurological function, and the gut microbiome. Understanding these connections is crucial from a predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM) perspective, as it may reveal novel intervention targets for managing both visual and mental health.

Fecal microbiota transplantation in a rodent model of short bowel syndrome: A therapeutic approach?

Extensive intestinal resection leads to Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS), the main cause of chronic intestinal failure. Colon preservation is crucial for spontaneous adaptation, to improve absorption and reduce parenteral nutrition dependence. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), a promising approach in pathologies with dysbiosis as the one observed in SBS patients, was assessed in SBS rats with jejuno-colonic anastomosis. The evolution of weight and food intake, the lenght of intestinal villi and crypts and the composition of fecal microbiota of Sham and SBS rats, transplanted or not with high f
