Lagoviruses are viruses of the Caliciviridae family affecting lagomorphs. Both pathogenic and non-pathogenic lagoviruses affect the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), and they are phylogenetically distinguished. Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV/GI.1) and Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus-2 (RHDV-2/GI.2) belong to the first group, while in the second group, several genotypes of Rabbit Calicivirus (RCV/GI.3-GI.4) are present. The first RCV strain was described in Italy in 1996, and since then, several RCV strains have been characterised in Europe and Australia. RCVs, different from th

We made 2 Z-based in situ hybridization (ISH) probes for the detection of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2; Lagovirus GI.2) nucleic acid in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) that had died during an outbreak of RHD in Washington, USA. One probe system was made for detection of negative-sense RNA (i.e., the replicative intermediate RNA for the virus), and the other probe system was constructed for detection of genomic and mRNA of the virus (viral mRNA). Tissue sets were tested separately, and the viral mRNA probe system highlighted m

Viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) is a term referring to a group of life-threatening infections caused by several virus families (Arenaviridae, Bunyaviridae, Filoviridae and Flaviviridae). Depending on the virus, the infection can be mild and can be also characterized by an acute course with fever accompanied by hypervolemia and coagulopathy, resulting in bleeding and shock. It has been suggested that the course of the disease is strongly influenced by the activation of signaling pathways leading to RIG-I-like receptor-dependent interferon production. RIG-I-like receptors (RLRs) are one of two maj

BACKGROUND: Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is a Lagovirus, a subgroup of the family Caliciviridae. RHDV2 is a variant first described in France in 2010, and has since spread globally. It has been reported in several Lagomorph species (rabbits, hares, and their relatives) as well as other mammals including voles and shrews. The disease has raised international concerns for its potential impact on population abundance trajectories, particularly as 25% of Lagomorphs are currently Red-Listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Irish hare (Lepus timidus h

Technical advancements have enabled the discovery of potential pathogens in an ever-broadening range of wildlife taxa. To further the scope of this body of knowledge and to inform conservation efforts, we examined potential disease agents present in swamp rabbits (Sylvilagus aquaticus) of southeastern Missouri, USA, during winter 2023. This region represents the northernmost portion of the species' range and is characterized by an intermixed landscape of preferred bottomland hardwood forest and agricultural landcover. Concerns about infectious disease threats to swamp rabbits have increased si

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is known as rabbit plague and hemorrhagic pneumonia. It is an acute, septic, and highly fatal infectious disease caused by the Lagovirus rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) in the family Caliciviridae that infects wild and domestic rabbits and hares (lagomorphs). At present, RHDV2 has caused huge economic losses to the commercial rabbit trade and led to a decline in the number of wild lagomorphs worldwide. We performed a necropsy and pathological observations on five dead rabbits on a rabbit farm in Tai'an, China. The results were highly similar to the clin

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2 or Lagovirus europaeus GI.2) is spreading across North America. This has enabled submissions of lagomorphs for testing to veterinary diagnostic laboratories (VDLs). The liver is currently the gold-standard sample type for testing by RT-qPCR. VDL clients usually seek alternate diagnostic approaches that permit simpler and faster sample collection with less risk of environmental contamination; there is also a necessity for a sample type that can be collected from live animals. Therefore, the goal of this study was to optimize and evaluate an RT-qPCR assa

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) is a highly pathogenic and contagious disease caused by RHD virus (RHDV) and RHDV type 2 (RHDV2), two distinct Lagovirus europaeus belonging to the Caliciviridae family. Serological investigations have been widely and successfully used on both wild and farmed rabbit populations. However, interpreting serological data remains uncertain, especially for IgA results in previously infected or vaccinated rabbits. The first part of this study reports the results of two independent vaccination experiments that demonstrated (a) serum IgA was present only in trace amoun

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is a highly contagious viral infection in rabbits that can occur in acute, subacute, chronic, or peracute forms and is not fatal. It is caused by RHD virus (RHDV), a member of the genus Lagovirus in the family Caliciviridae, with variants including RHDV1, RHDV1a, and RHDV2. First identified in 1984 in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in China, RHD has since been reported in Asia, Europe, Africa, Central America, and North America. Both innate and adaptive immune responses contribute to host defense, although rapid disease progression can limit adaptive

BACKGROUND: Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) is a highly contagious and acute fatal hepatitis of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), caused by a calicivirus (genus Lagovirus). Up to 2010, all RHD viruses (RHDV) isolated belonged to one genotype. In 2010, a new genotype of RHDV (RHDV2/b, currently designated GI.2 based on phylogenetic analysis) emerged in France. The aim of this study was to develop a rapid, simple, specific and sensitive TaqMan real-time PCR assay for the classic strain of RHDV and RHDV2 detection. Specific primers and probes were designed for the VP60 gene of RHDV a

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is a calicivirus of the genus Lagovirus that causes rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) in adult European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). First described in China in 1984, the virus rapidly spread worldwide and is nowadays considered as endemic in several countries. In Australia and New Zealand where rabbits are pests, RHDV was purposely introduced for rabbit biocontrol. Factors that may have precipitated RHD emergence remain unclear, but non-pathogenic strains seem to pre-date the appearance of the pathogenic strains suggesting a key role for the compre

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2; Caliciviridae, Lagovirus europaeus), the cause of a highly transmissible and fatal lagomorph disease, has spread rapidly through the western United States and Mexico, resulting in substantial mortality in domestic and wild rabbits. The disease was first detected in California in May 2020, prompting an interagency/zoo/academia/nonprofit team to implement emergency conservation actions to protect endangered riparian brush rabbits (Sylvilagus bachmani riparius) from RHDV2. Prior to vaccinating wild rabbits, we conducted a vaccine safety trial by giving a

Norovirus, often called winter vomiting bug, is the most common cause of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis in all age groups all over the world. It was discovered in 1972; belong to the genus Norovirus in the family Caliciviridae. Based on genomic organization and phylogenetic analysis, the family Caliciviridae is divided into four genera- Norovirus, Sapovirus, Vesivirus and Lagovirus. The aim of this review article was to find out the present status of prevalence and evolution of norovirus strains in developed and developing countries. In this article various literature on norovirus from dif
