Polar Origanum vulgare (Lamiaceae) extracts with antifungal potential against Sporothrix brasiliensis.

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) has anti-Sporothrix spp. activity, including against strains that are resistant to antifungal drugs. As the studies are limited to the essential oil, the aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical, antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of polar oregano extracts and their anti-Sporothrix brasiliensis activity. Aerial plant parts were used in the preparation of 10 min (INF10) and 60 min (INF60) infusions, a decoction (DEC) and a hydroalcoholic extract (HAE). Six phenolic acids and four flavonoids were identified and quantified through liquid-chromatography (LC-MS).

Thymus apulus (T. sect. Hyphodromi, Lamiaceae), a New Species from Southern Italy.

Thymus apulus, a new species from the calcareous highland (Murge hill area) of Apulia and Basilicata, southern Italy, is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to Thymus sect. Hyphodromi, and has been confused in the past with T. striatus (a southeastern European species), or T. spinulosus (a species strictly endemic to central and southern Italy). A morphometric analysis to assess the taxonomic relationships of the putative new species and the closely related T. spinulosus and T. striatus was carried out. Multivariate and univariate morphometric analyses demonstrate that T. apulus

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris [Lamiaceae]) Leaves Inhibit Contraction of the Nonpregnant Mouse Uterus.

Dysmenorrhea is painful menstrual periods, which affects 25% of women within reproductive age and has a prevalence of 67.2-90.0%. Current treatment has several adverse effects and can be ineffective once the pain is initiated. Thymus vulgaris traditionally used for pain management was investigated in this study for its activity on uterine contraction in the nonpregnant uterus, as a parameter for dysmenorrhea. The dried leaves of T. vulgaris were macerated in water, and the resulting aqueous extract was investigated on the isolated mouse uterus. Parameters investigated included spontaneous cont

Exploring the Diversity, Root Colonization, and Morphology of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Lamiaceae.

This study aimed to explore the diversity, root morphology, and colonization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associated with eight medicinal plants of the Lamiaceae family. Rhizospheric soil and root samples were collected from eight species of Lamiaceae plants for AMF analysis. The results indicate that root colonization was not directly related to the number of AMF spores in the rhizosphere. However, a significant correlation was found between the percentage of root colonization and the number of AMF species present in the individual plants. The highest percentage of colonization (86.6

A new species and a new record of Phlomoides (Lamiaceae) from Xizang, China.

Gout is caused by deposition of monosodium urate crystals in joints when plasma uric acid levels are chronically elevated beyond the saturation threshold, mostly due to renal underexcretion of uric acid. Although molecular pathways of this underexcretion have been elucidated, its etiology remains mostly unknown. We demonstrate that gout can be caused by a mutation in LDHD within the putative catalytic site of the encoded d-lactate dehydrogenase, resulting in augmented blood levels of d-lactate, a stereoisomer of l-lactate, which is normally present in human blood in miniscule amounts.
