Increasing landslide susceptibility and intensity under climate change for Aotearoa New Zealand.

Extreme weather events like tropical cyclones can trigger large numbers of landslides across vast areas due to extreme rainfall. Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023 triggered ~ 800,000 landslides across the North Island of New Zealand and is one of the most extreme landslide-triggering storms recorded to date. While climate change is expected to increase the intensity of future tropical cyclones, whether this translates into increased landslide numbers from extratropical cyclonic movement towards the New Zealand landmass remains contentious. Here we show that under a + 2 °C warming scenario, a

Landslide detection in remote sensing images on the basis of feature recursion and sample balance.

To increase the accuracy of landslide identification via high-resolution optical remote sensing images, this paper presents an improved landslide identification model based on the Mask R-CNN. First, a novel feature image extraction and fusion structure, ResNeSt-RFP, is constructed to enhance the model's capacity for deep landslide feature expression. Second, the improved model incorporates a one-stage object recognition structure, separates the segmentation and classification modules, and leverages the important sample balancing training capabilities inherent in the one-stage structure. Knowledge-Guided Modulation for Terrain-Aware Landslide Detection Using Deformable Transformers.

Landslide detection using medium-resolution optical remote sensing imagery remains challenging in complex mountainous environments because of spectral ambiguity, vegetation cover, shadows, and background interference. Although recent deep learning methods have improved detection performance, most existing approaches remain primarily appearance-driven and do not explicitly exploit terrain-related priors that are closely associated with slope instability. To address this limitation, we propose a terrain-aware deformable transformer framework for landslide detection using multimodal remote sensin

Numerical investigation on the seismically induced progressive failure of the 2017 Xinmo landslide in China.

The Xinmo landslide, a catastrophic event that claimed 10 lives and left 73 people missing, occurred in an active tectonic zone on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Although it is widely recognized that multiple earthquakes in the region have historically inflicted severe damage on the slope, there has been a lack of quantitative investigation into the slope's deformation and damage processes under repeated seismic events. In this study, we examined the response, deformation, and fracture processes of the Xinmo slope under multiple earthquakes through a series of numerical simulations

Hierarchical cross attention achieves pixel precise landslide segmentation in submeter optical imagery.

Accurate landslide segmentation using remote sensing imagery is a critical component of geohazards response systems, particularly in time-sensitive tasks such as post-earthquake landslide damage assessment and emergency resource allocation. However, current methodologies struggle with two persistent challenges in sub-meter true-color imagery: fine-grained inter-class confusion between landslides and spectrally analogous terrain features, and within-landslide heterogeneity where localized damage signatures coexist with macro-scale deformation patterns within individual landslide bodies. To over

Machine learning-based assessment of regional-scale variation of landslide susceptibility in central Vietnam.

Recurrent landslide events triggered by typhoons and tropical storms over Vietnam pose a longstanding threat to the nation's population and infrastructure. Changes in hydroclimatic conditions, especially the growing intensity and frequency of storms, have elevated landslide susceptibility in many parts of the country. This research examines the spatio-temporal variations in landslide susceptibility across central Vietnam over several years, using multi-temporal landslide inventories from Typhoon Ketsana (2009), Tropical Storm Podul (2013), and Typhoon Molave (2020). Additionally, the research

Design and Testing of a Flexible Inclinometer Probe for Model Tests of Landslide Deep Displacement Measurement.

The physical model test of landslides is important for studying landslide structural damage, and parameter measurement is key in this process. To meet the measurement requirements for deep displacement in landslide physical models, an automatic flexible inclinometer probe with good coupling and large deformation capacity was designed. The flexible inclinometer probe consists of several gravity acceleration sensing units that are protected and positioned by silicon encapsulation, all the units are connected to a 485-comunication bus. By sensing the two-axis tilt angle, the direction and magnitu

Different triggering mechanisms make grasslands more susceptible to clustered landslides than forests under extreme rainfall on the loess plateau.

Under extreme rainfall and vegetation restoration, clustered shallow landslides have occurred in some watersheds on the Loess Plateau. Accurately assessing landslide probability and understanding vegetation effects are critical for hazard prevention. Using an improved SINMAP model with two topographic wetness conditions representing distinct trigger mechanisms: w = 0 (loss of matric suction) and w = 1 (upper limit of pore water pressure), shear strength parameters were back-calculated from landslide data. Results show that observed landslides could be reproduced using the model with lower cohe

ConFormer-Net: Spatiotemporal Modeling for Landslide Detection Using Multi-Temporal SAR Data.

Landslides are characterized by sudden occurrence, severe destructiveness, and widespread spatial distribution. Therefore, rapid and accurate landslide detection is essential for reducing infrastructure damage and safeguarding human lives. Conventional landslide monitoring methods are generally time-consuming, labor-intensive, and inefficient, while existing deep learning-based landslide detection methods remain limited in multiscale spatial structure representation, temporal sequence modeling, and spatiotemporal feature fusion. To address these limitations, this study proposes ConFormer-Net,

From disturbance to resilience: early microbial community establishment in landslide soils of New Zealand.

Landslides strongly reshape mountain landscapes and initiate soil formation, yet microbial succession in newly formed soils remains poorly understood. We analysed bacterial and archaeal communities along a centennial landslide chronosequence in the Western Southern Alps of New Zealand using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and geochemical data. A core microbial community was established within ∼3 years and persisted for up to ∼100 years. Alpha diversity declined with soil age and was lowest in the oldest soils (Shannon: 4.8 ± 0.4 to 4.0 ± 0.2). Community composition showed strong and consiste

Widespread ancient bedrock landslide deposits facilitate deep weathering for storage and access of organic carbon.

Soils have been proposed as a tool to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). However, sparse field data and soil databases that do not account for geomorphic controls on soil properties hinder accurate quantification of soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics at the watershed scale. In mountainous terrain, relict landslide deposits are common and feature thick (>5 m), weathered profiles with substantial SOC below the typically measured top 30 cm of soil. We generated a SOC-age relationship using a landslide chronosequence in Western Oregon where these landforms are abundant. We applied our relati

Evolutionary analysis of slope direction deformation in the Gaojiawan landslide based on time-series InSAR and Kalman filtering.

The existing landslide monitoring methods are unable to accurately reflect the true deformation of the landslide body, and the use of a single SAR satellite, affected by its revisit cycle, still suffers from the limitation of insufficient temporal resolution for landslide monitoring. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for the dynamic reconstruction and evolutionary characteristic analysis of the Gaojiawan landslide's along-slope deformation based on ascending and descending orbit time-series InSAR observations using Kalman filtering. Initially, the method employs a gridded selection appro

Landslide Susceptibility Mapping with Integrated SBAS-InSAR Technique: A Case Study of Dongchuan District, Yunnan (China).

Landslide susceptibility maps (LSM) are often used by government departments to carry out land use management and planning, which supports decision makers in urban and infrastructure planning. The accuracy of conventional landslide susceptibility maps is often affected by classification errors. Consequently, they become less reliable, which makes it difficult to meet the needs of decision-makers. Therefore, it is proposed in this paper to reduce classification errors and improve LSM reliability by integrating the Small Baseline Subsets-Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SBAS-InSAR) tech
