Finding Words for Feeling Bodies: Exploring Drawing Techniques in Dutch Care Practices.

Feeling is difficult to put into words. Anthropologists have been seeking ways to articulate feeling or other bodily experiences, looking beyond words and borrowing from artistic methods. Drawings, for instance, have been used to make visible what words cannot describe and attributed with qualities associated with feeling or the body. Instead of placing drawing in opposition to words, and words in opposition to bodies, this article presents different ways of using drawing as an ethnographic technique to tentatively find practice-specific words to articulate practices of feeling the body. The influence of right or left handedness on the ability to simulate handwritten signatures and some elements of signatures: a study of Arabic writers.

It has been widely assumed since the 1970s that right-handed writers, on average, do not write or simulate handwriting any better than left-handed writers. This study has dug deeper into that question, to find narrow language environments which left-handed and right-handed writers simulate with different degrees of success or making different types of errors. These might provide useful markers of handedness in writers or forgers. The sample of 823 native Arabic-writing adults, 763 right handed and 60 left handed, first attempted to simulate two Arabic signatures. As expected, the accuracy of t

The impact of developmental speech and language impairments on the acquisition of literacy skills.

Children with developmental speech/language impairments are at higher risk for reading disability than typical peers with no history of speech/language impairment. This article reviews the literacy outcomes of children with speech/language impairments, clarifying the differential risk for three groups of children: speech production impairments alone, oral language impairments alone, and speech production and oral language impairments. Children at greatest risk for reading and writing disabilities are children with language impairments alone and children with comorbid speech impairments and lan

The Black Saturday bushfire disaster: found poetry for arts-based knowledge translation in disaster risk and climate change communication.

This research uses the arts-based research method of found poetry, the creation of poem-like prose from existing text, to share the lived experience of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfire disaster in Australia which killed 173 people. After outlining the processes, this paper applies found poetry to an existing text: Peg Fraser's book, Black Saturday. Five found poems are shared, each conveying a different element of the disaster experience: "Armageddon," "Go - GET OUT," "Bushfire Chook," "Resisting the Poetry Tree," and "Lucky". Compared to normal prose, there is an authentic and vulnerable vibr

Children's early school attendance and stability as a mechanism through which homelessness is associated with academic achievement.

Unfortunately, family homelessness is a crisis in the United States. The majority of families experiencing homelessness are headed by single mothers and half of children who experience homelessness are less than five years of age. In the current study, we investigated whether children's school attendance and stability mediated the association between early experiences of homelessness (in infancy and toddlerhood) with children's school performance on standardized assessments of math and English language arts administered in the spring of third grade in a sample of children of young mothers. We

How Portuguese and American teachers plan for literacy instruction.

This study explored American and Portuguese elementary teachers' preferences in planning for literacy instruction using the Language Arts Activity Grid (LAAG; Cunningham, Zibulsky, Stanovich, & Stanovich, 2009), on which teachers described their preferred instructional activities for a hypothetical 2-h language arts block. Portuguese teachers (N = 186) completed Portuguese versions of a background questionnaire and LAAG electronically, in Survey Monkey; American teachers (N = 102) completed identical English measures using paper and pencil. Results showed that teachers in both groups usually a

All Work and All Play: Participation in Leisure Activities in Academically Focused Afterschool Programming Is Linked to Better Math Grades.

Designed to improve outcomes for children from high-poverty, low-performing schools, the federally funded 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program emphasizes academic outcomes. We examined the effects of participation in academic and leisure activities in Michigan 21st CCLC programs on English language arts (ELA) and mathematics grades among seventh- and eighth-grade students. Leisure activities were defined as any nonacademic activity: recreation and social time, physical movement, youth development, arts, and health and nutrition. Results showed that male students, low-income s

The missing foundation in teacher education: Knowledge of the structure of spoken and written language.

Reading research supports the necessity for directly teaching concepts about linguistic structure to beginning readers and to students with reading and spelling difficulties. In this study, experienced teachers of reading, language arts, and special education were tested to determine if they have the requisite awareness of language elements (e.g., phonemes, morphemes) and of how these elements are represented in writing (e.g., knowledge of sound-symbol correspondences). The results were surprisingly poor, indicating that even motivated and experienced teachers typically understand too little a

The influence of early malnutrition on subsequent behavioral development III. Learning disabilities as a sequel to malnutrition.

The academic performance of 129 Barbadian children (77 boys and 52 girls), who were 5-11-yr-old and suffered moderate to severe protein-energy malnutrition in the first year of life, was compared with the performance of matched comparisons, children who had no history of malnutrition. Children with a history of malnutrition were found to have lower performance on eight out of nine academic subject areas, namely, language arts, mathematics, general science, social science, reading, health, religion, and arts/crafts. Socioeconomic factors in the backgrounds of the children were also examined. A

The association between child maltreatment and academic achievement: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although the association between child maltreatment and academic performance has been well-established, the magnitude of these associations remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to summarize the associations between child maltreatment and its subtypes (physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect) and academic achievement (general achievement, language arts, and math) as well as to explore potential moderators. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This present meta-analysis included 59 studies with 211,568 participants, of which 50.6 % were girls, and their mean age was 10.49 years.

Mitigating Misinformation Toolkit: A Medical Student Role-Play Curriculum on Communication Techniques to Facilitate Vaccine Misinformation Conversations.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID pandemic and affiliated infodemic led to widespread health misinformation, generating confusion and distrust. Physicians must identify and address misinformation, with attention to cultural/health literacy, equity, and autonomy. Most medical students receive training in core communication techniques but are rarely taught how to combat misinformation with patients and lack opportunities for practice in diverse settings. METHODS: We used mixed methods to evaluate the impact of a role-play-based training curriculum on 44 third- and fourth-year medical students' comfort an

Creative Interventions for Preparing and Disclosing Trauma Narratives in Group Therapy for Child Sexual Abuse.

Group therapy is a widely utilized and empirically supported treatment for victims of child sexual abuse (CSA). An important aspect of trauma-focused groups for CSA is the composition and presentation of a trauma narrative as part of a gradual exposure process. One challenge in the creation of a trauma narrative in group is the contagious avoidance that may be present if group members are reluctant to engage in the development of a trauma narrative. Creative group therapeutic interventions can assist in mitigating avoidance, a hallmark of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), by reducing resis

[Assessment of psychomotor development of Spanish children up to 3 years of age conceived by assisted reproductive techniques: Prospective matched cohort study].

INTRODUCTION: More than five million children have been conceived by assisted reproductive techniques (ART) around the world. Most authors agree that there are no differences in psychomotor development in comparison to naturally conceived children. However, these results are still contradictory. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether children born from a cohort of ART-clinical gestations have a higher risk of suffering neurodevelopmental disorders in comparison to a control group. The potential associated ART-factors associated were also determined. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included the asse

Characterizing the relationship between air pollution and childhood cognition in the Children's health and air pollution study.

Air pollution has been linked to impaired cognitive outcomes and lower academic performance in children. The Children's Health and Air Pollution Study (CHAPS) is a longitudinal cohort study following children who live in the Fresno metropolitan area of California, where air pollution is notoriously high. In this study, we investigated the relationship between estimated concentrations of three high-priority air pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, and O3) at the home and school and multiple years of standardized test scores from children in the CHAPS cohort. We analyzed data from 97 children between ages 8

Amplitude rise time sensitivity in children with and without dyslexia: differential task effects and longitudinal relations to phonology and literacy.

The speech amplitude envelope carries important acoustic information required for speech intelligibility and contains sensory cues (amplitude rise times, ARTs) that play a key role in both sensory rhythm perception and neural speech encoding. Individual differences in children's sensitivity to ARTs have been related to the development of children's phonological processing skills across languages by the Temporal Sampling theory. Impaired processing of ARTs also characterises children with dyslexia. However, different ART tasks have been employed in different studies, in different languages, and

BACKGROUND: The WHO Regional Office for Europe has increasingly recognized the potential value of arts and music participation for children's health, well-being, and development. However, how music supports children's learning when integrated with narrative activities remains insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This review examined the practice structures, language-narrative and socioemotional outcomes, and learner- and design-related conditions associated with music-supported narrative learning for children aged 3-12 years.
