Development of children with early language delay.

Four children with early language delays (ELD) were compared to a control group of 12 children with respect to their preschool language abilities from age 2 1/2 to 5 years and their verbal skills at the end of Grade 2. The language-delayed children each initially showed severe and broad impairments in syntactic, phonological, and lexical production. Over time, their deficits became milder and more selective, such that normal or nearly normal speech and language proficiency was exhibited by age 60 months. Nevertheless, when followed up 3 years later, three of the four cases were severely readin

Preterm children's early language development: Language-specific and domain-general child-related precursors.

In the dynamic and complex process of language development, some populations, like preterm-born children, are at risk of developing language delays. This review addresses possible language-specific (i.e., prosody, word recognition, gesture) and domain-general (i.e., motor, visual perception and attention, joint attention, EFs) child-related precursors to language development of preterm children in the first three years of life. We examine how each factor can contribute to the development of language in this population. We end our review by providing suggestions for future theoretical framework

[Language development disorders--studies of preschool children of the Leipzig special language school].

Children with severe speech disorders were examined to determine the causes of their abnormal speech development. Thirty-seven preschool and school-age children were followed up and results compared. All children had low intelligence quotients, with most of the children coming from low social backgrounds. However, both of these factors (intelligence and low social background) had no influence on the improvement of speech levels after therapy. Two-thirds of the children with moderate conductive hearing losses showed improvement after therapy, so that the effect of this hearing loss was believed

The development of language in babies and the role of the family.

Nowadays for deaf children there are many new opportunities that provide enhanced ways of hearing stimulation. These concerns may result as much more significant as the family is engaged in the stimulation program. An NHS program in Campania was launched in 2005. According to these concerns, the family plays a central role both in the diagnostic and the therapeutic intervention of the impaired children. As paradigm of the important role of the family in the rehab project is a comparison between two kids in charge by our team. The outcomes are better in children who received stimulation by the f

The development of language and literacy: evaluating the stereotypes.

People hold many stereotypes about the development of language and reading. We review current data concerning three stereotypes: (1) Girls learn language faster than boys; (2) Biological factors determine the time course of language acquisition; and (3) Dyslexia is a visual problem involving the reversal of letters. In each case, recent data leads to a different picture of the acquisition of language and literacy and deepens our understanding of the processes involved.

Auditory processing and the development of language and literacy.

This paper considers evidence for basic auditory processing impairments associated with dyslexia and specific language impairment, against a back-drop of findings from studies of the normal development of auditory and phonological processing. A broad range of auditory impairments have been implicated in the aetiology of these language-learning disorders, including deficits in discriminating the temporal order of rapid sequences of auditory signals, elevated thresholds for frequency discrimination and for detection of amplitude and frequency modulation, impaired binaural processing and increase

Adapting the Assessing British Sign Language Development: Receptive Skills Test into American sign language.

Signed languages continue to be a key element of deaf education programs that incorporate a bilingual approach to teaching and learning. In order to monitor the success of bilingual deaf education programs, and in particular to monitor the progress of children acquiring signed language, it is essential to develop an assessment tool of signed language skills. Although researchers have developed some checklists and experimental tests related to American Sign Language (ASL) assessment, at this time a standardized measure of ASL does not exist. There have been tests developed in other signed langu

The effects of heritage multilingualism on foreign language learning: a comparison of children with typical language development and developmental language disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Both multilingualism and developmental language disorder (DLD) may be associated with inferior performance in the majority language, albeit for different reasons. At the same time, there is a growing body of evidence that multilingualism may have a positive effect on foreign language performance. This study tests the hypothesis that the positive effects of multilingualism on foreign language learning may be smaller in children with DLD compared to their multilingual peers with typical language development. METHODS: In a 2 × 2 design, we compare the effects of multilingualism and

Delayed language development due to infantile thiamine deficiency.

The aim of this study was to investigate the language development of 20 children who had been exposed to thiamine (vitamin B(1)) deficiency in infancy due to feeding with soy-based formula that was accidentally deficient of thiamine. In this case-control study, 20 children (12 males, eight females; mean age 31.8mo [SD 4.1], range 24-39mo) who were fed thiamine-deficient formula in infancy were compared with 20 children (12 males, eight females; mean age 32.2mo [SD 3.9], range 25-39mo) fed with other milk sources and matched for age, sex, and maternal education. Influence of sensory integration procedures on language development.

The relationship between language development and sensory integration was explored through single case experimental studies of one female and three male aphasic children ranging in age from 4 years, 0 months to 5 years, 3 months. Other agencies had assessed all the children in the area of language development at least 6 months before the start of occupational therapy. Three of the four children had received either speech therapy, special education specific to aphasia, or both, before starting occupational therapy. Additional baseline data on language expression and comprehension, as well as on

Language Development in Preschool Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Boys.

BACKGROUND: the present study aims to assess language in preschool-aged Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) boys with normal cognitive quotients, and to establish whether language difficulties are related to attentional aspects or to the involvement of brain dystrophin isoforms. METHODS: 20 children aged between 48 and 72 months were assessed with language and attention assessments for preschool children. Nine had a mutation upstream of exon 44, five between 44 and 51, four between 51 and 63, and two after exon 63. A control group comprising 20 age-matched boys with a speech language disorder a

Comprehension: an overlooked component in augmented language development.

PURPOSE: Despite the importance of children's receptive skills as a foundation for later productive word use, the role of receptive language traditionally has received very limited attention since the focus in linguistic development has centered on language production. For children with significant developmental disabilities and communication impairments, augmented language systems have been devised as a tool both for language input and output. The role of both speech and symbol comprehension skills is emphasized in this paper. METHOD: Data collected from two longitudinal studies of children

[Vestibular function: a prerequisite for normal language development?].

BACKGROUND: First language acquisition depends on intermodal perception, especially auditive, tactile-kinesthetic, and partly visual in addition to sensomotoric integration. The influence of the vestibular function for a physiological language development is still unknown. PATIENT: A case history of a child with bilateral aplasia of all semicircular canals, normacusis in the right ear, and severe sensorineural hearing loss in the left (hearing aid supplied), without mental deficiency, allows us to draw initial conclusions. RESULTS: Logopedic diagnostics revealed only a mild articulation diso

Mental State Language Development in Children With Down Syndrome Versus Typical Development.

This study compared mental state language (talk about emotions, thoughts, intentions, etc.) used by 6- to 11-year-old children with Down syndrome (DS) to a younger typically developing (TD) comparison group matched by nonverbal cognition. We aimed to determine (1) whether mental state language use is delayed in DS relative to developmental expectations, and (2) if there are differences between groups in the association between mental state language and developmental factors (emotion knowledge, expressive language). Rate of mental state language use was significantly lower in the group with DS,

Language Access and Hemispheric Specialization: A Network Neuroscience Framework for Typical and Atypical Language Development.

Neural plasticity in early life underpins the emergence of hemispheric specialization, including left-lateralized networks commonly involved in language. In typical development, neural organization becomes progressively more efficient and specialized across hemispheres, with trajectories shaped by early sensory input and linked to later language outcomes. Because human neuroimaging evidence supports a role for language experience across sensory modalities in shaping neural organization, early sensorineural hearing loss provides a model system for disentangling how sensory and language environm

Warning signs in the development of speech, language, and communication: when to refer to a speech-language pathologist.

TOPIC: Because of the link between communication impairments and psychiatric disorders, it is important for nurses and other healthcare professionals to know the warning signs for the need for a communication/speech/language evaluation for children during infancy through early childhood. PURPOSE: This article presents an overview of the role of speech-language pathologists (SLPs); the expected developmental achievements for youngsters from infancy to age 5 in speech, language, and communication; and the clinically significant warning signs that indicate a need for speech/language assessment.

The play and language behavior of mothers with and without dyslexia and its association to their toddlers' language development.

The play and language behavior of mothers with (n = 49) and without (n = 49) specific reading disabilities (RD) was investigated during play with their 14-month-old children. The contribution of maternal behavior to the language development of their children was examined. The children's receptive and expressive language skills were assessed longitudinally at 14, 18, and 30 months, using the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories and the Reynell Developmental Language Scales. Children with and without familial risk for RD did not differ from each other in any play or language measures
