White matter development and language abilities during infancy in autism spectrum disorder.

White matter (WM) fiber tract differences are present in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and could be important markers of behavior. One of the earliest phenotypic differences in ASD are language atypicalities. Although language has been linked to WM in typical development, no work has evaluated this association in early ASD. Participants came from the Infant Brain Imaging Study and included 321 infant siblings of children with ASD at high likelihood (HL) for developing ASD; 70 HL infants were later diagnosed with ASD (HL-ASD), and 251 HL infants were not diagnosed with ASD (HL-Neg). A control

What pediatricians should know about normal language development: ensuring cultural differences are not diagnosed as disorders.

The roles and responsibilities of speech-language pathologists and pediatricians have become greater with the changing population demographics in the United States. In some states, the majority of the population belongs to a national cultural minority, eg, New Mexico. Even a state such as Iowa, with only a 5% nonmajority population, has a school-aged population that is almost 10% nonmajority. This growth of diversity is likely to continue. Rather than viewing sensitivity to the influence of culture on language learning and other developmental areas as an "add-on" to a practice, it may be wiser

Development of Language and Pragmatic Communication Skills in Preschool Children with Developmental Language Disorder in a Speech Therapy Kindergarten-A Real-World Study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies document the importance of communicative abilities for children's development. Especially in recent years verbal communication in preschool children with developmental language disorder (DLD) has been studied, relying heavily on statistical analysis, outcome measures, or/and parents' reports. PURPOSE: This explorative study investigates the effects of speech therapy on the development of language and verbal communication skills in preschool children with DLD within their peer group in a day-to-day setting using objective video-documentation. HYPOTHESIS: Speech the

Longitudinal relations between phonological and grammatical development of young children with developmental language disorder.

Most children with a developmental language disorder (DLD) have persistent grammatical difficulties, and a considerable subgroup of these children also experience difficulties in their speech production development. Research suggests that speech and language development are related, but what this relation looks like is unclear. We examined whether phonological and grammatical complexity and accuracy scores of 3- to 6-year-old children with DLD are related over time. We included 37 children with DLD (mean age T1 = 4;2 (SD = 1;0), range: 2;9-6;0) who received intervention in a clinical setting.

Speech sound development of young Dutch children with a developmental language disorder: A complex matter.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 50% of all young children with a developmental language disorder (DLD) also have problems with speech production. Research on speech sound development and clinical diagnostics of speech production difficulties focuses mostly on accuracy; it relates children's phonological realizations to adult models. Contrarily to these relational analyses, independent analyses indicate the sounds and structures children produce irrespective of accuracy. Such analyses are likely to provide more insight into a child's phonological strengths and limitations, and may thus provide better

What School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists Need to Know About Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding Development and Disorders.

PURPOSE: School-based speech-language pathologists are at the frontline for treating children with pediatric feeding disorders (PFDs). Often, speech-language pathologists are the primary allied health professionals who are charged with maximizing safety, supporting nutrition and neurodevelopmental growth. Due to the increasing need for assessment and treatment of PFDs in schools, it is fundamental that PFDs and dysphagia are detected, differentially diagnosed, and addressed to support developing children. This tutorial addresses the anatomy, physiology, and development of functional feeding an

Speech and language therapists' insights into severity of speech sound disorders in children for developing the speech sound disorder severity construct.

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) are at higher risk of communication breakdown, but the impact of having an SSD may vary from child to child. Determining the severity of SSD helps speech-language therapists (SLTs) to recognise the extent of the problem and to identify and prioritise children who require intervention. AIMS: This study aimed to identify severity factors for SSD in order to develop a multifactorial Speech Sound Disorder Severity Construct (SSDSC) using SLTs' views and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). METHOD: In

Clinical characteristics of children referred to a child development center for evaluation of speech, language, and communication disorders.

Speech, language, and communication disorders are prominent reasons for referrals to a child development center. From 1984 to 1988, 1,090 preschool children were referred to our child development center, which serves the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. Of all referrals, 432 (41%) were primarily due to speech, language, and communication problems. After exclusion of those with IQ < 50 and those with non-language-related disabilities, 323 children remained. The children were classified into different subtypes of developmental language disorders and autistic spectrum disorders. The main developmental

A comparison of two dynamic assessment situations for detecting development language disorder in monolingual and bilingual children.

Bilingual children's language skills are strongly influenced by exposure to each of their languages, among other linguistic, environmental, and cognitive factors. In the speech and language therapy clinic, it is difficult to disentangle developmental language disorders from insufficient exposure. Dynamic assessment, which directly tests the learning potential of children, offers a promising solution for this dilemma. This study compares the clinical potential of two dynamic assessment situations, varying amount of adult mediation (autonomous computer game vs. interactive story reading with gra

Production of noun suffixes by Turkish-speaking children with developmental language disorder and their typically developing peers.

BACKGROUND: Turkish has a rich system of noun suffixes, and although its complex suffixation system may seem daunting, it can actually present a learning opportunity for children. Despite its unique features, Turkish has not been studied extensively, especially in the case of children with language deficits, such as developmental language disorder (DLD). Most of the extant studies are focused on bilingual children, and the results are somewhat mixed. AIMS: To focus on the noun morphology system of Turkish-speaking preschoolers with DLD and compare their use with that of two groups of typicall

Usefulness of the Bayley scales of infant and toddler development, third edition, in the early diagnosis of language disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the common causes of total serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) values of> 10 ng/mL in an Arab population, as in the USA and Europe the risk of prostate cancer is considered high in men with such PSA levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Serum total PSA was measured in men presenting to our hospital as part of the investigation for prostate cancer screening and/or in elderly men with prostatism. Men with a serum PSA level of> 10 ng/mL were further investigated by transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) of the prostate and biopsy of suspicious lesions for histological diagnosis.

Gabapentin may promote language development in a pediatric patient with autism spectrum disorder: a case report.

At this time, there is no report of how gabapentin may promote language development in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experiencing neuropathic pain. A clinically significant increase in expressed vocabulary, around 10 words when gabapentin was prescribed to around 150 words at the 6-month follow-up, was observed in a child with ASD. This was likely due to improved symptoms of neuropathic pain, which could have allowed the patient to more effectively focus on language acquisition. Given that speech therapy had failed for years at that time to improve the patient's vocabulary and h

Early gross motor skills predict the subsequent development of language in children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Motor milestones such as the onset of walking are important developmental markers, not only for later motor skills but also for more widespread social-cognitive development. The aim of the current study was to test whether gross motor abilities, specifically the onset of walking, predicted the subsequent rate of language development in a large cohort of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: We ran growth curve models for expressive and receptive language measured at 2, 3, 5 and 9 years in 209 autistic children. Measures of gross motor, visual reception and autism

Retrieval-Based Word Learning in Young Typically Developing Children and Children With Development Language Disorder II: A Comparison of Retrieval Schedules.

Purpose Retrieval practice has been found to be a powerful strategy to enhance long-term retention of new information; however, the utility of retrieval practice when teaching young children new words is largely unknown, and even less is known for young children with language impairments. The current study examined the effect of 2 different retrieval schedules on word learning at both the behavioral and neural levels. Method Participants included 16 typically developing children ( M TD = 61.58 months) and 16 children with developmental language disorder ( M DLD = 59.60 months). Children partic

Foxp2 mutations and abnormal brain and gastrointestinal development: insights from animal models of speech-language and autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and speech and language disorder (SLD) are distinct neurodevelopmental conditions, yet both share overlapping communication impairments. Forkhead box P2 (FOXP2), a key transcription factor involved in speech and language development, harbors pathogenic mutations such as R553H, which cause SLD and have been suggested to contribute to aspects of ASD-related phenotypes. This review synthesizes insights from animal models to explore the molecular mechanisms by which Foxp2 mutations disrupt the development of the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and enteric nervous system.

Social-Emotional Functioning and Quality of Life in Language Disorders: A Systematic Review of Development From Childhood to Adolescence.

BACKGROUND: It is well-established that children and adolescents with developmental language disorder (DLD) have social-emotional difficulties. This is reflected in their behaviour, for instance, by (social) withdrawal, hyperactivity or difficulty with peer relations. Children with DLD are also known to have poorer quality of life (QoL). This is likely to be related to social-emotional difficulties, for both concern similar developmental domains but from a different point of view. Findings on the social-emotional abilities, QoL and predictors thereof in children with DLD are inconsistent acros

[Principle symptoms of delayed language development and behavioral disorders. 2 case studies on the topic of fragile X syndrome].

Case reports of two boys (5 1/2 and 3 1/2 years old) with fragile X syndrome are presented. In both cases, the typical somatic signs were absent. On the other hand, the psychopathology, with delayed language development and behaviour problems (especially hyperactivity and autistic behavior), provided the indication for a chromosome analysis. Fragile X syndrome was diagnosed in both cases, but in case 2 two subsequent controls were negative. The conclusions are that a diagnosis of fragile X syndrome must be viewed with skepticism until it has been confirmed by a second chromosome analysis in an
