Speech and language therapy interventions for children with primary speech and language delay or disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is thought that approximately 6% of children have speech and language difficulties of which the majority will not have any other significant developmental difficulties. Whilst most children's difficulties resolve, children whose difficulties persist into primary school may have long-term problems concerning literacy, socialisation, behaviour and school attainment. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness of speech and language interventions for children with primary speech and language delay/disorder. SEARCH STRATEGY: The following databases were searched: The Cochrane Control

Involving relatives in aphasia therapy: an application of language enrichment therapy.

A programme of therapy for aphasia devised in Finland, Language Enrichment Therapy, was tested in an English version, particularly in respect of its co-operative use by speech therapists and the patients' relatives at home. Although a number of changes were recommended, the method was approved of by therapists and relatives. The majority of patients showed improvement, as assessed by the Western Aphasia Battery, over a period of less than three months with a regimen of one hour a week with the therapist supplemented by an average of five hours of help by a relative at home. These results shoul

Efficacy of speech therapy in children with language disorders: specific language impairment compared with language impairment in comorbidity with cognitive delay.

OBJECTIVE: this article discusses the effect of speech therapy on language comprehension, language production and non-verbal functioning in two groups of children with developmental language disorders. DESIGN: retrospective study-a follow-up after a mean of 2 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: verbal and non-verbal functioning before and after therapy were examined in 31 language-impaired children with normal hearing and good health. In 16 children the language functioning was substantial behind their non-verbal functioning. They were categorised as children with specific language impairment (SLI

'It depends': Characterizing speech and language therapy for preschool children with developmental speech and language disorders.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested that practitioners hold speech and language therapy (SLT) practice as tacit and consequently it is difficult for the therapist to describe. The current study uses a range of knowledge elicitation (KE) approaches, a technique not used before in SLT, as a way of accessing this tacit knowledge. There is currently no agreed framework that establishes key factors underpinning practice for preschool children with speech and language disorders. This paper attempts to address that gap. AIMS: To develop a framework of SLTs' practice when working with preschoo

Effectiveness of 1:1 speech and language therapy for older children with (developmental) language disorder.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of the effectiveness of therapy for older children with (developmental) language disorder (DLD), and particularly those with receptive language impairments, is very limited. The few existing studies have focused on particular target areas, but none has looked at a whole area of a service. AIMS: To establish whether for students with (developmental) language disorder attending a specialist school, 1:1 intervention with an SLT during one school term improves performance on targeted areas, compared with untreated control areas. Also, to investigate whether gender, receptive

Brief Report: Speech and Language Therapy in Children with ASD in an Aquatic Environment: the ASLT (Aquatic Speech and Language Therapy) Program.

Although water-based approaches have been shown to be beneficial for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), no study thus far has directly investigated the effects of such intervention programs on language skills. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the Aquatic Speech and Language Therapy (ASLT) program, which is a new, exclusively aquatic intervention program designed especially for children with ASD. The effects of ASLT were compared to the outcome of a similar classroom-based intervention, in two groups of children with ASD matched for age, gender, and expressive/recep

Better language through chemistry: Augmenting speech-language therapy with pharmacotherapy in the treatment of aphasia.

Speech and language therapy is the standard treatment of aphasia. However, many individuals have barriers in seeking this measure of extensive rehabilitation treatment. Investigating ways to augment therapy is key to improving poststroke language outcomes for all patients with aphasia, and pharmacotherapies provide one such potential solution. Although no medications are currently approved for the treatment of aphasia by the United States Food and Drug Administration, numerous candidate mechanisms for pharmaceutical manipulation continue to be identified based on our evolving understanding of

Influence of speech-language therapy on P300 outcome in patients with language disorders: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The patient's evolution in the audiology and speech-language clinic acts as a motivator of the therapeutic process, contributing to patient adherence to the treatment and allowing the therapist to review and/or maintain their clinical therapeutic conducts. Electrophysiological measures, such as the P300 evoked potential, help in the evaluation, understanding and monitoring of human communication disorders, thus facilitating the prognosis definition in each case. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the audiology and speech-language therapy influences the variation of P300 latency and

Mainstreaming Sure Start speech and language therapy services.

Mainstreaming is the process of transferring policy, activity or good practice from a community-based initiative, such as Sure Start, into the core service. This paper will explain how one Sure Start programme developed a strategy for speech and language therapy (S&LT) that had an impact on the development of mainstream S&LT provision. The strategy explained here has shown the potential for team working and multi-agency delivery of new services. The new service was based on quality standard setting (as highlighted in government policy); positive multi-agency working based on sharing and skill

Speech and language therapy for aphasia following stroke.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia describes language impairment associated with a brain lesion. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effects of formal speech and language therapy and non-professional types of support from untrained providers for people with aphasia after stroke. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Stroke Group Trials Register (last searched: March 1999), and reference lists of relevant articles to December 1998. We also contacted academic institutions and other researchers to identify further published and unpublished trials. We searched The International Journ

Speech-Language Pathologists' Responsivity During School-Based Therapy.

PURPOSE: This study explored speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') verbal responsivity during school-based speech-language therapy sessions. Further, we examined the relations between SLP responsivity and child initial language skill and child talk during sessions, and the associations between SLP responsivity and child language gains over a school year. METHOD: Study methods involved a secondary analysis of 26 one-on-one school-based speech-language therapy sessions involving certified SLPs and children with developmental language disorder in the United States. Session data were manually tra

Person-centered care and speech and language therapy.

Person-centered care (PCC) has become the foundation for practice in many areas of health care provision. Research has suggested that providing PCC may improve therapy outcomes, client satisfaction, and perceived quality of care, as well as address aspects of evidence-based practice. As members of the health care provider community, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) will be expected to provide PCC as part of their therapeutic interactions. Some research, however, has indicated that SLPs have a tendency to provide more structured, task-oriented therapies. In this article, a working definition

Comparison of cross-language generalisation following speech therapy.

Percutaneous coronary intervention in severely calcified coronaries has been associated with higher rates of procedural complications, including myocardial infarction and death in addition to increased frequency of coronary revascularization on an intermediate and long-term basis. The SYNTAX score, which is designed to assess the complexity of coronary artery disease and aids in choosing a revascularization method, allocates two points per lesion when there is heavy calcification present on fluoroscopy. With the advent of novel multimodality imaging technologies, the detection and evaluation o

Supporting practitioner research in speech and language therapy.

This paper discusses the characteristics of action research and promotes its potential for speech and language therapists. Action research is an approach which involves the practitioner and has as its purpose the improvement of practice. Small-scale studies by practitioners can be used to examine practical applications and implications of larger-scale studies. A group of therapists, motivated by a wish to investigate their own practice, proposed the development of a group to support their work, facilitated by the author.

Speech and language therapy for management of chronic cough.

BACKGROUND: Cough both protects and clears the airway. Cough has three phases: breathing in (inspiration), closure of the glottis, and a forced expiratory effort. Chronic cough has a negative, far-reaching impact on quality of life. Few effective medical treatments for individuals with unexplained (idiopathic/refractory) chronic cough (UCC) are known. For this group, current guidelines advocate the use of gabapentin. Speech and language therapy (SLT) has been considered as a non-pharmacological option for managing UCC without the risks and side effects associated with pharmacological agents, a
