[Visceral and cutaneous larva migrans].

The syndrome of visceral larva migrans was described for the first time in 1952 by Beaver. He demonstrated that the presence of nematodes larvae, particularly in the liver, were those of Toxocara canis and T. cati. Baylisascaris procyonis, the common racoon ascarid in the U.S.A. can also cause serious diseases in human. Digestive and respiratory clinical symptoms are usually moderate, however severe disease resulting from invasion of the myocardium or the brain has been reported. A blood hypereosinophilia is usually present the first few years after infection. Diagnosis uses serological method

Visceral larva migrans mimicking lymphoma.

We report a case of visceral larva migrans in an adult with fever, night sweats, weight loss, hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy, bilateral pleural effusion, and eosinophilia-mimicking lymphoma. Visceral larva migrans was diagnosed subsequently because of negative findings for malignancy and positive serologic test result for Toxocara canis. Progressive improvement was observed with albendazole therapy.

Visceral larva migrans presenting with hypereosinophilia.

Toxocariasis is an infection caused by the ingestion of larvae of the dog Toxocara canis or the cat Toxocara cati. A 2.5 year old boy was admitted to our clinics with fever, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. His medical history included geophagia (pica) and amebiasis infection. On admission, the physical examination revealed hepatomegaly and pallor. There was marked eosinophilia with leukocytosis, anemia, hypergammaglobulinemia and elevated serum Ig E titers. Toxocariasis was confirmed by anti-Toxocara IgG and Western blot. After 7 days of albendazole therapy, leukocytosis persisted and a s

Toxocariasis: visceral larva migrans in children.

OBJECTIVES: To present a detailed investigation of risk factors, symptoms, and laboratory and imaging tests that may be useful to establish the clinical laboratory diagnosis of visceral larva migrans (VLM) in children, demonstrating the importance of diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications in the eyes, liver, and other organs. SOURCES: Literature review using the MEDLINE and LILACS (1952-2009) databases, selecting the most recent and representative articles on the topic. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: VLM is an infectious disease with non-specific clinical presentation, whose transmission

Visceral larva migrans mimicking rheumatic diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To report rheumatologic or rheumatologic-like manifestations of the visceral larva migrans (VLM) syndrome. METHODS: We carried out a prospective study of patients with VLM seen in a private practice setting in Mexico City between 1990 and 1993. RESULTS: From a population of 600 patients we identified 6 patients (5 women) with VLM. Three patients complained of arthralgia; in 4 a history of migratory cutaneous lesions was elicited, and in one monoarthritis of the right knee was found. One patient had deep edema that suggested thrombophlebitis of the right arm; the man in our series

Zoonotic visceral and ocular larva migrans.

Infection of children with the larval stage of the dog roundworm Toxocara canis usually produces few, if any, clinical signs. In some children, however, the disease may be severe, with permanent ocular or neurologic sequelae. Because the prevalence of infection may exceed 10 per cent in some population subgroups, it is important to understand the modes of transmission and risk factors for infection. The clinical presentations of toxocariasis as well as recommendations for their prevention are described.

Neuroretinitis in presumed visceral larva migrans.

Neuroretinitis is a rate manifestation of toxocariasis that can occur as a late sequelae to the active disseminated phase of the disease visceral larval migrans (VLM). This case report describes a 14-year-old boy who developed VLM and concurrent neuroretinitis. During the acute illness, the patient's serum ELISA titer to Toxocara canis rose to greater than 256 and a lymph node biopsy revealed necrotizing lymphadenitis with eosinophilia. The constitutional symptoms of VLM may be mild and easily overlooked in children. Toxocariasis is an important diagnostic consideration in persons with acute n

Visceral larva migrans (toxocariasis) in Toronto.

A 7-year-old child was admitted to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children in 1976 with symptoms and laboratory findings compatible with visceral larva migrans, a disease usually caused by Toxocara canis. This prompted a search for other cases seen at the hospital during the period 1952 through 1978. Only 18 cases were discovered that met at least three of six criteria and thus were considered possible or probably cases of the disease. Three possible cases of ocular toxocariasis during the same period were also uncovered. Fever was the commonest presenting symptom. Eosinophilia, leukocytosis and

Ophthalmic manifestations of visceral larva migrans.

Two patients had ocular manifestations of infestation with visceral larva migrans. In neither case did the eye involvement improve despite thiabendazole, local and systemic steroids, and cryotherapy. The lack of ocular response to treatment may be assumed to be because of organisms were already dead. Thiabendazole therapy is probably worth trying for early ophthalmic involvement with visceral larva migrans if the organism is still alive. In most cases the diagnosis of visceral larva migrans can be made with the help of the ELISA serum antigen determination so that enucleation of the eye will n
