Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is now understood to be a disease affecting the entire upper aerodigestive tract and can manifest from varied symptoms such as dysphonia, chronic cough, dysphagia, and globus yet the root cause likely remains outside the natural boundaries of otolaryngology care. The health care environment is evolving from one that places emphasis solely on clinical outcomes to one that now values patient-centered care as well, LPRD is no exception. The future of managing and treating LPRD relies on optimizing diagnostic tools and creating LPRD-specific treatment option

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic laryngopharyngeal symptoms (LPS) are increasingly prevalent presentations to gastroenterologists' offices, and clinicians often make a presumptive diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) based on LPS symptoms or laryngoscopic findings alone. Such presumptive diagnoses of LPRD often are incorrect, and establishing the correct diagnosis poses significant challenges for clinicians. This review addresses the timely need for advances in evaluating and managing LPS/LPRD, given their diagnostic complexity and the healthcare burden of ineffective empiric treatme

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a prevalent disease associated with non-specific symptoms and findings. Many gray areas persist in the pathogenesis of LPR, the diagnosis and the treatment. Symptoms are poorly correlated with fiberoptic signs or hypopharyngeal-esophageal multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH monitoring findings. The therapeutic response remains uncertain with some resistant patients to medical or surgical treatment. The development of LPR-symptoms and findings may be related to the refluxate of a myriad of gastroduodenal enzymes, which may modify the laryngopharyngeal and or

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a common condition encountered in otolaryngological practice in the United Kingdom. It is one of the most important aetiological factors for many inflammatory disorders of the upper aerodigestive tract. The presentations are diverse and include chronic hoarseness, sensation of a foreign body in the throat, sore throat, dysphagia, postnasal drip, excessive throat mucous, chronic cough and throat clearing. LPR patients may not complain of heartburn. Although LPR is common, its diagnosis may not be easy, as its symptoms are non specific and the laryngeal findings

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Gastropharyngeal or laryngopharyngeal reflux is considered as a factor in various diseases of the larynx and pharynx. The most important consequence of the reflux into the larynx is laryngeal cancer.
METHODS: In this prospective study the incidence of gastropharyngeal and laryngopharyngeal reflux in 22 patients with untreated laryngeal cancer was investigated with 24-hour, double probe pH measurements. A group of 25 patients with heartburn and dyspepsia complaints in whom esophagogastroscopy revealed no pathology and for whom 24-hour pH measurement was indicated served as a c

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is one of the most common causes of cough. It may not respond to acid suppression trials because non-acidic and weakly acidic reflux are often the etiology in refractory cases. Hypopharyngeal-esophageal multichannel intraluminal impedance with dual pH testing is the gold standard to diagnose LPR and guide personalized treatment of individual patients. Treatments typically involve a combination of barrier agents such as sodium alginate-based agents, acid suppression (when indicated), and diet and lifestyle management.

Objectives: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a complex syndrome characterized by the reflux of gastroduodenal contents into the pharynx or larynx, resulting in a range of symptoms, including chronic cough, throat clearing, pain, dysphagia, hoarseness, and dysphonia. Despite the lack of a gold standard for diagnosis or treatment, various strategies have been proposed to manage LPR. However, the effectiveness of these treatments is compromised by the lack of a uniform treatment protocol, which places a burden on patients, physicians, and the healthcare system. This study aims to systematically

In patients with chronic and recurrent sinusitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux disease may play a significant role. Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease differs from gastroesophageal reflux disease in the extent of reflux (into the hypopharynx and above) as well as timing (occurring more often when the patient is upright). Most patients are unaware of the extent of their symptoms, and diagnostic tools such as pH probe, multichannel intraluminal impedance, and manometry are required for adequate diagnosis. Although therapy with lifestyle modification and acid-suppressive agents may improve reflux in th

BACKGROUND: The San Diego Consensus for Laryngopharyngeal Symptoms (LPS) and Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease (LRPD) describes a broad-based multidisciplinary management paradigm that focuses on mechanisms underlying symptoms to improve treatment outcomes.
PURPOSE: This review expands on the San Diego Consensus framework to discuss multidisciplinary management of LPS and LPRD. LPS manifest as persistent or disproportionate symptoms despite minimal or inconsistent evidence of reflux exposure. Emerging evidence suggests that hyperresponsiveness, hypervigilance, and symptom-specific anxiety are

OBJECTIVES: Double-probe, 24-hour pH monitoring remains the 'gold standard' for the diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease, even though there is no consensus on how to interpret the data collected.
METHODS: Tetra-probe, 24-hour pH monitoring was performed in 56 patients with suspected laryngopharyngeal reflux, in order to investigate patterns of laryngopharyngeal and gastroesophageal reflux.
RESULTS: The number of reflux episodes and the total and percentage time periods spent with pH < 4.0 were correlated with the distance of the probe from the lower oesophageal sphincter. The number

BACKGROUND: During the last decades an increased prevalence of reflux disease can be observed. Otolaryngologists play an increasing role in the treatment of patients suffering from laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Typical symptoms for LPR are globus sensation, dysphagia, throat clearing, chronic cough and hoarseness. The most frequent laryngoscopic finding in patients suffering from LPR is a posterior commissure hypertrophy. LPR is confirmed by laryngoscopy, LPR-related laryngoscopy scoring, 24-hour dual-probe pH-monitoring, and by empiric trial with proton pump inhibitors (PPI). For therapy PP

Even though the symptoms and findings of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) have been described, the clinical diagnosis is sometimes elusive. Symptoms can occur in the absence of conclusive laryngeal physical findings, and they can be nonspecific. For example, dysphonia can be caused not only by LPR, but also by neoplasia and by geriatric, neurologic, and behavioral disorders. The clinician must realize that the diagnosis of LPR is based on a combination of factors, including symptoms, laryngeal findings, and diagnostic test results.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is characterized by the reflux of gastric contents into the pharynx or larynx and often presents with symptoms including but not limited to cough, throat clearing, sore throat, globus, and dysphonia. Unlike gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), LPR is a relatively understudied syndrome, and knowledge regarding the diagnostic and treatment strategies, as well as the psychosocial impact continues to evolve. No singular test or procedure currently exists as a gold standard for LPR diagnosis. While laryngoscopy or pH monitoring may be positive, this does not exclud

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a common defect among laryngological and phoniatric patients. Although LPR is categorized as a superficial gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), differential diagnosis should treat these two diseases separately. LPR symptoms can be assessed in the interview using as a tool the reflux symptom index (RSI). In addition, changes in the larynx that occur during LPR might be seen during laryngoscopy and classified according to the reflux finding score (RFS). One of the main mucosal irritants in LPR is pepsin which digests proteins and impairs the functions of the
