BACKGROUND: Horses are extremely susceptible to ionophore intoxication. Although numerous reports are available regarding monensin, little is known about lasalocid toxicity.
OBJECTIVES: To describe accidental lasalocid poisoning on a farm in Belgium.

In the first part of the present study, a total of 109 faeces samples collected from calves suffering from diarrhoea were examined for Cryptosporidium parvum oocytes and 39 (35.8%) of them were found to be positive. OBJECTIVES: To establish epidemiological cut-off values (ECOFFs) for the polyether ionophores narasin, salinomycin, lasalocid and monensin in Enterococcus faecium.
METHODS: MICs were measured using the broth microdilution method according to ISO 20776-1 (2019). Method validation involved ≥10 replicates of antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212. A total of 182 E. faecium isolates from various sources were tested in five European laboratories. The ECOFFinder tool from EUCAST was used to establish the ECOFFs for 122 WT isolates, verified by PCR or WGS.

Lasalocid, sinefungin, and dehydroepiandrosterone were tested for anticryptosporidial activity with an immunodeficient mouse model at doses that have been reported effective when tested with immunosuppressed rodent models. Hydrolytic and photolytic degradation were investigated for the ionophore antibiotics lasalocid, monensin, salinomycin, and narasin. The hydrolysis study was carried out by dissolving the ionophores in solutions of pH 4, 7, and 9, followed by incubation at three temperatures of 6, 22, and 28 °C for maximum 34 days.
