Cadherins are cell adhesion molecules that play important roles in development of a variety of tissues and organs including the nervous system. In this study we analyzed expression patterns of three zebrafish classical (type I) cadherins (cadherin-1, -2, and -4) in the embryonic zebrafish cranial ganglia and lateral line system using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical methods. All three cadherins exhibit distinct spatiotemporal patterns of expression during cranial ganglia and lateral line system development. cadherin-1 message was detected in the trigeminal and facial ganglia, in t

The head of adult hagfishes (jawless craniates, Myxinoidea) of the family Eptatretidae displays a number of skin grooves of uncertain origin. These grooves have been homologized to the neuromast lines of other craniates, and they are innervated by two ganglionated cranial nerves that have been interpreted as lateral line nerves. The grooves do not, however, contain the compound receptors that are typical of a lateral line (i.e. neuromasts or electroreceptors), and both their development and function have remained enigmatic. To elucidate the embryonic origin of the grooves (which should develop

The lateral line system of Astronotus ocellatus comprises one trunk canal, one tail canal, and three head canals. The sensory receptors on the head are innervated by rami of the dorsal anterior, ventral anterior, and posterior lateral line nerves, and those along the trunk and tail by rami of the posterior lateral line nerve. The peripheral configuration of lateral line canals and nerves was examined in whole mount preparations, the central connections of restricted groups of endorgans studied using HRP and degeneration methods, and the neuronal morphology and cytoarchitecture of the lateralis

The topographical relationship between the swim bladder, the inner ear, and the otic lateral line was studied in the bottom dwelling catfish, Ancistrus sp. In addition, afferent and efferent subcomponents of the eighth and lateral line nerves were labelled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or with differently fluorescing dextran amines. The swim bladder of Ancistrus consists of two separate, transversely oriented parts of each of which is connected to the sinus impar of the inner ears via two Weberian ossicles and the perilymphatic sac. The osseous capsula of the ear has two foramina other tha

Piezo proteins have been identified as mechanosensitive ion channels involved in mechanotransduction. Several ion channel dysfunctions may be associated with diseases (including deafness and pain); thus, studying them is critical to understand their role in mechanosensitive disorders and to establish new therapeutic strategies. The current study investigated for the first time the expression patterns of Piezo proteins in zebrafish octavolateralis mechanosensory organs. Piezo 1 and 2 were immunoreactive in the sensory epithelia of the lateral line system and the inner ear. Piezo 1 (28.7 ± 1.55

A severe fungal infection affecting the head and lateral line system was diagnosed in 7 captive scalloped hammerhead sharks Sphyrna lewini in an aquarium in Thailand. Extensive and severe necrotizing cellulitis was consistently observed microscopically along the cephalic and lateral line canals in conjunction with positive fungal cultures for Fusarium sp. Molecular phylogenetic analysis was performed from 3 isolates based on the nucleotide sequences containing internally transcribed spacer (ITS) and a portion of 5.8S and 28S rDNA. The fungus was highly homologous (100%) and closely related to

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction mostly relies on the experience of surgeons. To improve the effectiveness and adaptability of the tension after ACL reconstruction in knee joint rehabilitation, this paper establishes a lateral force measurement model with relaxation characteristics and designs an on-line stiffness measurement system of ACL. In this paper, we selected 20 sheep knee joints as experimental material for the knee joint stability test before the ACL reconstruction operation, which were divided into two groups for a comparative test of single-bundle ACL reconstruct

The direct application of recombinant human glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (rhGDNF) to the deep structures of the nigrostriatum has been shown previously to augment dopamine function and inhibit loss of substantia nigra neurons in rodent models of Parkinson's disease. The present studies were designed to determine whether administration of rhGDNF into the lateral ventricle, a more clinically accessible intracranial target, is capable of augmenting dopamine function of the nigrostriatal pathway in normal rats. Single bolus intracerebroventricular (i.c.v) injections of rhGDNF increa

Regional differences in the architecture and size of lateral line canals and neuromasts were measured in an Antarctic fish, Trematomus bernacchii, and the data were used in models of canal and cupular mechanics to predict the frequency response of these two peripheral structures. These modeled predictions were then compared to frequency response functions measured with single unit recording techniques from anterior and posterior lateral line fibers innervating different canals on the head and trunk of fish of various sizes. Despite large variations in the peripheral morphology of head and trun

The lateral-line system of gars consists of superficial neuromasts, which are arranged in lines termed pit lines, canal neuromasts and spiracular organs, which are located within diverticula of the hyoid gill pouch. Both canal and superficial neuromasts possess polarized hair cells whose directional sensitivity parallels the long axis of their respective lines. However, the apical surfaces of canal neuromasts are larger and possess far more hair cells than do those of superficial neuromasts, but superficial neuromasts have longer kinocilia and, presumably, longer cupulae. The receptors of the

The inner-ear and lateral-line afferents were studied in members of almost all urodele families and in two primitive representatives of anurans and gymnophionans by means of transganglionically transported horseradish peroxidase. The lateral-line projection patterns are, when present, identical in all urodeles and gymnophionans. This is in agreement with the presence of ampullary organs in all urodeles and gymnophionans which possess a lateral-line neuromast system. In contrast, even the most primitive anurans lack both ampullary organs and the dorsal projection of afferents from these organs.

Survival of aquatic animals requires sensing water movement. In both aquatic vertebrates and cephalopods, sensory cells arranged in 'lateral lines' on the surface of the animal detect water motion relative to the animal's body with mechanosensitive hair bundles1. Cephalopod lateral lines differ from those of fishes in hair bundle cytoskeletal composition, morphology, and receptor cell location. Fish have lateral lines arrayed on the head and body, whereas squid lateral lines, also termed epithelial lines or lateral line analogs, have only been described in detail on the head and arms2,3; it is

Neuromast cells are specialized mechanosensory receptor cells embedded within the lateral line system of aquatic vertebrates, enabling the detection of water movement and vibration that are essential for navigation, prey capture, and predator avoidance. These cells share common evolutionary and functional homology with mammalian inner ear hair cells, both of which rely on stereocilia-mediated mechano-transduction and ion channel activation to convert mechanical stimuli into neural signals. Unlike their mammalian counterparts, neuromast hair cells possess a regenerative capacity following damag

Behavioural asymmetry, typically referred to as laterality, is widespread among bilaterians and is often associated with asymmetry in brain structure. However, the influence of sensory receptor asymmetry on laterality has undergone limited investigation. Here we used threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to investigate the influence of lateral line asymmetry on laterality during lab simulations of three mechanosensation-dependent behaviours: predator evasion, prey localization and rheotaxis. We recorded the response of stickleback to impacts at the water surface and water flow in pho

Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory and vestibular systems in the inner ears of all vertebrates. Hair cells also serve to detect water flow in the lateral line system in amphibians and fish. The zebrafish lateral line serves as a well-established model for investigating hair cell development and function, including research on genetic mutations associated with deafness and environmental factors that cause hair cell damage. Rheotaxis, the ability to orient and swim in response to water flow, is a behavior mediated by multiple sensory modalities, including the lateral line organ

The lateral-line system of the goldfish, Carassius auratus, is described from the receptor distribution on the body surface to the termination of the primary afferents within the octavolateralis column. Goldfish have a continuous lateral-line canal system which consists of supraorbital, infraorbital, operculomandibular and supratemporal commissural canals on the head and a trunk canal extending the length of the trunk. There is a single neuromast between each 2 canal pores. The total number of canal neuromasts on the head ranges from 74 to 100. On the body the total number of canal neuromasts

The Antarctic notothenioids are a monophyletic radiation of fishes that have evolved under conditions of low light and cold, where non-visual sensory systems, such as the mechanosensory lateral line system, would be of importance. As part of a study of the structure and function of the mechanosensory lateral line system in these fishes we systematically characterized the function of the anterior lateral line system in one of the common benthic species, Trematomus bernacchii. Frequency-response and threshold-tuning curve methods yield similar functional characterizations of single afferent fibr

Experiments on the flow-sensitive lateral line system of fishes have provided important insights into the function and sensory transduction of vertebrate hair cells. A common experimental approach has been to pharmacologically block lateral line hair cells and measure how behavior changes. Cobalt chloride (CoCl2) blocks the lateral line by inhibiting calcium movement through the membrane channels of hair cells, but high concentrations can be toxic, making it unclear whether changes in behavior are due to a blocked lateral line or poor health. Here, we identify a non-toxic treatment of cobalt t
