Nonseptic lateral sinus thrombosis: the role of the otolaryngologist.

Nonseptic lateral sinus thrombosis differs from septic lateral sinus thrombosis in that it is not associated with ear or sinus infection. Mastoid changes are frequently detected on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging in cases of nonseptic lateral sinus thrombosis. An otolaryngologic evaluation is usually required to exclude coexisting mastoiditis.

Lateral sinus thrombosis as a complication of acute mastoiditis.

Lateral sinus thrombosis is a rare complication of middle ear diseases: in children, it is usually related to acute otitis media, but it is also found in adults with chronic otitis. It was more frequent in the pre-antibiotic era and mortality was high. The Authors present a paediatric case of lateral sinus thrombosis in which they describe the clinical approach and related literature.

Management of lateral sinus thrombosis in chronic otitis media.

OBJECTIVE: To present our experience with the diagnosis and treatment of lateral sinus thrombosis (LST) secondary to otogenic disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have retrospectively reviewed all the cases of LST caused by chronic otitis media in ten years. RESULTS: In our series of five patients, four patients were successfully treated by surgery without opening the sigmoid sinus. On the other hand, one of our patients developed hydrocephalus and ataxia during preoperative antibiotic treatment. CONCLUSION: Most patients with thrombotic/nonabscessed sinuses will have successful outcomes with

Otogenic Lateral Sinus Thrombosis: Controversies and Current Management Strategies.

Background: Otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis (OLST) is a rare but potentially life-threatening intracranial complication of middle-ear infection. Despite advances in imaging, antimicrobial therapy and otologic surgery, optimal management-particularly anticoagulation-remains controversial, and no standardized clinical guideline is available. Methods: A structured narrative review was conducted using PubMed for English-language human studies published between 1 January 2015 and 31 January 2025. The search was repeated and documented during revision on 12 May 2026. Four searches were run separat

Management of lateral sinus thrombosis: update and literature review.

The management of four cases of lateral sinus thrombosis (LST) over a four-year period at the Royal Darwin Hospital is presented in this retrospective review. The patients were aboriginal and presented with otalgia, otorrhoea and sepsis. Two cases had an associated complication of an otitic hydrocephalus and a subperiosteal abscess. Cholesteatoma was found in three cases. Computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed the LST in three cases. Three patients were anaemic and thrombocytopenic. All patients had positive blood cultures. The organisms were predominantly mixed anaerobes and Bacteroides spec

[Lateral sinus thrombosis in the first three months of pregnancy].

Thrombosis of the cerebral venous sinuses is characterized by clinical pleomorphism and variable pathogenesis. Although there is a relationship with pregnancy and especially with the puerperium, occurrence during the first trimester of pregnancy is unusual and this may effect the diagnosis and treatment. We describe the case of a 33 years-old patient with lateral sinus thrombosis in the first trimester of pregnancy. This was diagnosed and followed-up by magnetic resonance. Investigations as to its aetiology were inconclusive and it followed a benign course without anticoagulation. Thrombosis o

Otogenic thrombosis of the lateral sinus: report of a case in a child.

A case of thrombosis of the lateral sinus complicating the mastoiditis in a five year old boy is presented. This intracranial complication of suppurative otitis media which has become rare since the use of antibiotics, still raises diagnostic and therapeutic problems. The various clinical and paraclinical elements of this rare pathology, its diagnosis and treatment are reviewed.

Presentation, treatment, and clinical course of otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis.

CONCLUSIONS: Otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis (OLST) is almost always associated with other complications of chronic otitis media (COM) and did not present a distinct clinical expression. In our experience, OLST exhibits a benign course if the underlying disease is controlled. Mastoidectomy in combination with broad-spectrum antibiotics provided effective treatment. Anticoagulation therapy is no longer used routinely. Recanalization is rare and is independent of the use of anticoagulants. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to contribute to the understanding of the clinical aspects and evolution of

Pediatric lateral sinus thrombosis: retrospective case series and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: A comparison between the literature and our management of pediatric patients presenting with otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis. DESIGN: A retrospective case series of five pediatric patients. SETTING: Four patients were treated at BC Children's Hospital, whereas the fifth patient was treated in New Westminster, BC. All were treated between 1994 and 2001. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted with a literature review for otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Treatment success was based on resolution of acute infection and neurologic symptoms. RE

Gradenigo's syndrome with lateral venous sinus thrombosis: successful conservative treatment.

Gradenigo's syndrome (GS) is a rare disease characterised by the triad otitis media, pain in the region innervated by the first and the second division of trigeminal nerve and abducens nerve palsy. Septic sinus thrombosis is one of the most frequent and relevant complication of GS; it is often due to persistent damage and late diagnosis. Computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allow the correct diagnosis in most cases. Surgical therapy may be necessary for a better and more rapid resolution of the disease. We report the case of a 4-year-old child that was admitted fo

Non-otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis: a complication of acute sphenoid sinusitis.

The consequences of intracranial spread of sinus infection can be dismal. The subtle presentation of sphenoid sinusitis often leads to a delay in diagnosis. The disease may go unrecognized until complications are severe enough to cause more localizing symptoms. Often infections in the head and neck spread into the cranial cavity, leading to a localized effect. For example, otogenic infections can spread to the mastoid or lateral venous sinus. We report a case of sphenoid sinusitis complicated by lateral and sigmoid venous sinus thrombosis.

Otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis in children: A review of 7 cases.

Otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis (LST) is a rare but serious intracranial complication of acute or chronic otitis media. Reported mortality rates have ranged from 8 to 25%; the pediatric mortality rate might be as low as 5%. Controversy still exists over the medical and surgical management of this condition. We conducted a retrospective chart review of 7 cases of pediatric otogenic LST that were treated at our institution over a period of 8 years. We hypothesized that good outcomes in very sick patients can be achieved by aggressively managing the mastoid cavity and without the need for a thr

Conservative nonsurgical treatment of a child with otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis.

We present the case of a 5-year-old boy with otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis that developed after acute mastoiditis, with no prior ear disease. He was treated with myringotomy and antibiotics alone, with no surgical intervention. This approach was followed owing to his good general condition, the prompt response to the antimicrobial treatment, and no evidence of suppurative disease. Sinus recanalization was evident on the follow-up computed tomography 4 months later. We believe that in selected cases of otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis, secondary to an acute ear infection with early respons
