Pathological laughter as an obsessive-compulsive phenomenon.

METHOD: Pathological laughter has been known to occur in organic and functional psychotic disorders and is sometimes seen in hysteria. Though it is an important phenomenon, its significance in other psychiatric disorders has been negligible. This case report highlights the phenomenology of pathological laughter as an obsessive-compulsive phenomenon in an adolescent girl. RESULTS: The girl was brought by her parents with a history of laughing without reason, but on detail evaluation, it was found that her laughing was an irrational and ego-dystonic phenomenon. She also showed resistance to her

Humour and laughing in patients with prolonged incurable cancer: an ethnographic study in a comprehensive cancer centre.

PURPOSE: Most people are familiar with the expression 'laughter is the best medicine'. By enhancing cognitive flexibility and strengthening relationships, laughter can be considered a holistic care-approach. Yet, in medical oncology, especially the palliative phase, using humour can be considered inappropriate or taboo. We aimed to explore the acceptability and functions of humour and laughter in patients with prolonged incurable cancer. METHODS: This study was performed in a Dutch Comprehensive Cancer Centre. We included four short conversations with patients, eighteen in-depth patient-inter

Effects of laughter yoga on health-related quality of life in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is associated with a wide range of physical and psychological side effects, so complementary and alternative therapies may be practiced as an independent treatment or combined with the standard ones to improve health-related quality of life of cancer patients. Laughter yoga has predominantly been used as a complementary therapy to enhance health and wellbeing of ordinary people and patients with chronic diseases. However, to date, few studies have evaluated the effects of this modern exercise on cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in clinical settings, to the best

The effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments for PTSD-related anxiety, depression, and trauma-related discomfort is examined in the current systematic review. METHODS: Fifty-five relevant studies that reported on the randomized controlled trials and metaanalyses published between 2008 an

Refractory Temporal Gelastic Seizure: A Case Report.

Gelastic seizures are rare epileptic events characterized by sudden, unprovoked bursts of laughter that are typically associated with hypothalamic hamartomas but may also arise from cortical epileptogenic foci. We report the case of an eight-year-old boy born prematurely at 28 weeks' gestation who presented with a two-year history of recurrent hypermotor seizures, loss of consciousness, behavioral arrest, falls, and frequent episodes of inappropriate laughter. Video electroencephalography demonstrated epileptiform activity consistent with left temporal lobe epilepsy with mild diffuse encephalo

Humour in clinical-educational interactions between graduate student clinicians and people with aphasia.

BACKGROUND: During clinical interactions, clinicians and people with aphasia (PWA) use humour and laughter for a range of purposes, most of which contribute to friendly interactions in which the participants appear to develop a positive regard for one another. Moreover, humour is a vital component of facework, or the processes interactants engage in to protect their own and one another's well-respected, public personas. AIMS: To examine the ways in which speech-language pathology graduate student clinicians enlist humour during one-on-one therapy sessions for PWA. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Three

Rectus sheath haematoma: a rare presentation of non-contact strenuous exercises.

Rectus sheath haematoma (RSH) is a well-documented but uncommon clinical condition. It is usually a self-limiting condition but can present as a life-threatening emergency. RSH after non-contact vigorous exercise is unknown. Two such cases secondary to yoga and laughter therapy sessions, respectively, are reported. One of them required surgical intervention, whereas the other was successfully treated conservatively.

Effects of laughter on focus and stress in middle-aged adults: a single-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Disorders associated with mental health significantly impact disability-adjusted life year values and represent an ongoing problem in stressed societies. Worsening mental health also affects cognitive function and quality of life. Increasing attention has thus been attracted to preventive measures for mental and brain health in daily life. This has created a growing interest in care using laughter. This study assessed the effects of a short-term, laughter-based intervention on the mental health and cognitive functions of middle-aged adults. METHODS: The study applied a single-blin

Excessive Laughter-like Vocalizations, Microcephaly, and Translational Outcomes in the Ube3a Deletion Rat Model of Angelman Syndrome.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by intellectual disabilities, motor and balance deficits, impaired communication, and a happy, excitable demeanor with frequent laughter. We sought to elucidate a preclinical outcome measure in male and female rats that addressed communication abnormalities of AS and other neurodevelopmental disorders in which communication is atypical and/or lack of speech is a core feature. We discovered, and herein report for the first time, excessive laughter-like 50 kHz ultrasonic emissions in the Ube3amat-/pat+ rat model o

Effects of a self-care-based education and laughter yoga on chronic stress, menopausal symptoms, and salivary cortisol: A randomized controlled trial.

Menopause and its symptoms significantly affect women's physical, psychological, and social well-being, often resulting in chronic stress. Education based on the self-care model's three components-maintenance, monitoring, and management-combined with laughter yoga, a proven stress-reducing practice, may effectively aid in managing menopausal symptoms and stress. This randomized controlled trial investigated the impact of a menopause education program grounded in the self-care model and integrated with laughter yoga on menopausal symptoms, perceived stress, coping styles, and salivary cortisol
