Modulating the properties and structure of a wheat starch-lauric acid system via modified soy protein isolate.

Modulation of starch digestibility in ternary systems involving starch, lipids, and proteins is an emerging research area. However, native soy protein isolate (SPI) restricts the formation of wheat starch (WS)-lauric acid (LA)-protein complexes because of its rigid globular structure. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of SPI modified via pH-shift (pHS), ultrasound (US), and high-pressure microfluidisation (HPM) on the characteristics and structure of the WS-LA system. The results showed that the WS-LA-protein systems containing modified SPI exhibited increased cooling peak viscosit

Unraveling the Heterogeneous but Ordered Microstructure of the Nonionic Deep Eutectic Solvent Formed by Lauric Acid and N-Methylacetamide.

The nonionic deep eutectic solvent, formed by lauric acid (LA) and N-methylacetamide (NMA), has been shown to have a heterogeneous molecular structure in which the LA and NMA form nonpolar and polar domains, respectively. Previous vibrational spectroscopy experiments demonstrated that the ability of the LA domains to solvate compounds was limited to long carbon chains, whereas other nonpolar molecules, such as W(CO)6, were found to be solvated by both LA and NMA. These experiments were not fully compatible with the previously proposed micelle-like structure of the nonpolar domains of the LA-NM

In Vitro Performance of Dutasteride-Nanostructured Lipid Carriers Coated with Lauric Acid-Chitosan Oligomer for Dermal Delivery.

Dutasteride, licensed as an oral medicine for the treatment of benign prostatic hypoplasia, has been investigated as a treatment for androgenic alopecia. In this study, the potential for dustasteride to be delivered topically in order to reduce systemic exposure, irritation of the skin, and also cytotoxicity was explored. Chitosan oligomer (CSO) was successfully synthesised with lauric acid as a coating for a dutasteride-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (DST-NLCs) system. DST-NLCs were prepared using a combination of melt-dispersion and ultrasonication. These negatively charged NLCs (-18.0

Combined administration of lauric acid and glucose improved cancer-derived cardiac atrophy in a mouse cachexia model.

Cancer-derived myocardial damage is an important cause of death in cancer patients. However, the development of dietary interventions for treating such damage has not been advanced. Here, we investigated the effect of dietary intervention with lauric acid (LAA) and glucose, which was effective against skeletal muscle sarcopenia in a mouse cachexia model, on myocardial damage. Treatment of H9c2 rat cardiomyoblasts with lauric acid promoted mitochondrial respiration and increased ATP production by Seahorse flux analysis, but did not increase oxidative stress. Glycolysis was also promoted by LAA.

Antimicrobial property of lauric acid against Propionibacterium acnes: its therapeutic potential for inflammatory acne vulgaris.

The strong bactericidal properties of lauric acid (C12:0), a middle chain-free fatty acid commonly found in natural products, have been shown in a number of studies. However, it has not been demonstrated whether lauric acid can be used for acne treatment as a natural antibiotic against Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), which promotes follicular inflammation (inflammatory acne). This study evaluated the antimicrobial property of lauric acid against P. acnes both in vitro and in vivo. Incubation of the skin bacteria P. acnes, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Staphylococcus epidermidis (S

A new strategy for steady-state butyric acid encapsulation: Mechanism of starch-lauric acid-protein-butyric acid complex formation, release characteristics and prebiotic properties.

To address the low endogenous production and short half-life of butyric acid (BA), this study successfully constructed an AM-LA-WP-BA quaternary complex for the targeted delivery of butyric acid to the colon through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, utilizing amylose (AM), lauric acid (LA), and whey protein (WP). Debranching pretreatment of the starch improved the stability of the starch-lauric acid-protein-butyric acid (SLPB) quaternary complex and its butyric acid encapsulation capacity. Analysis indicated that a 12 h debranching treatment resulted in the highest relative crysta

Physicochemical characterization, release profile, and antibacterial mechanisms of caffeic acid phenethyl ester loaded in lipid nanocapsules with lauric acid and glycerol monolaurate.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the biological activities of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), including antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the application of CAPE is limited by its low bioavailability and stability. In this work, we designed a CAPE loaded nanocapsule system by using polyoxyl-15-hydroxystearate, coconut oil and lecithin (LE)/lauric acid (LA)/glycerol monolaurate (GML) to improve the release rate of CAPE. The Blank-GML-lipid nanocapsules (BK-GML) and CAPE loaded BK-GML (CAPE-GML) were mainly assembled by hydrophobic forces and electrost

Lauric Acid Microemulsions Inhibit Staphylococcus aureus Through Cell Membrane Disruption and Potential Interference with Peptidoglycan Biosynthesis.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a prominent foodborne pathogen that poses a continuous threat to global public health and food safety due to its possession of a variety of toxins and its multidrug resistance. Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), notably lauric acid (LA), exhibit strong antimicrobial properties, but their application is heavily constrained by poor water solubility. In this study, optimized LA emulsions stabilized by chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were evaluated for their antibacterial activity and detailed mode of action against S. aureus ATCC 6538. The antibacteri

Coconut oil/lauric acid-based nanodrug formulation: a multifunctional platform for enhancing cancer therapy and mitigating toxicity.

The significant toxicity associated with anticancer drugs during traditional treatments, such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy, limits their therapeutic index by causing various adverse effects on healthy cells. Particularly, the clinical application of platinum (Pt)-based anticancer drugs (Pt-ADs), including cisplatin, carboplatin, and others, is challenging and severely hampered by intrinsic drug resistance, oxidative stress, and toxicity. Lipid-based nanodrug delivery systems have emerged as a promising solution to overcome these challenges, offering enhanced drug t

Fabrication, characterization, and bioactivity assessment of chitosan microemulsion containing lauric acid-vitamin E against foodborne pathogens.

Lauric acid (LA) is an antimicrobial medium-chain fatty acid, but its poor aqueous solubility limits its application in food matrices. To address this, ultrasound-assisted emulsion was developed using LA in vitamin E (VE) oil and chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (CS-PVA) aqueous matrix. The emulsion exhibited uniformly dispersed oil droplets forming a compact network structure, along with superior stability and viscoelastic properties. No phase separation was observed during storage except for the 5 CP/VL system after 30 days, where CP/VL refers to the CS-PVA/VE-LA. Functionally, the emulsion disrup

Glycerides of lauric acid supplementation in the chicken diet enhances the humoral and cellular immune response to infectious bronchitis virus.

Controlling pathogenic infections while reducing antibiotic usage is an important challenge during poultry production. In addition to vaccination strategies, several solutions to enhance the immune response against pathogens are evaluated. In this study, we aim to determine the effects of the glycerides of lauric acid (GLA) supplementation in chickens' diets on humoral and cellular immune response pathogenic infections, using an in vivo model of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). One-day-old Ross 308 broilers were vaccinated with live attenuated IBV and fed diets supplemented with or without G

Dietary Supplementation with Lauric Acid Improves Aerobic Endurance in Sedentary Mice via Enhancing Fat Mobilization and Glyconeogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Lauric acid (LA), a major, natural, medium-chain fatty acid, is considered an efficient energy substrate for intense exercise and in patients with long-chain fatty acid β-oxidation disorders. However, few studies have focused on the role of LA in exercise performance and related glucolipid metabolism in vivo. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with LA on exercise performance and related metabolic mechanisms. METHODS: Male C57BL/6N mice (14 wk old) were fed a basal diet or a diet containing 1% LA, and a series of exercise tests, including a h

Pea Starch-Lauric Acid Complex Alleviates Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Colitis in C57BL/6J Mice.

The previous documentation has shown the role of resistant starch in promoting intestinal health, while the effect of starch-lipid complex (RS5) on colitis remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect and potential mechanism of RS5 in colitis. We prepared RS5 complexes by combining pea starch with lauric acid. Mice with dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis were treated with either RS5 (3.25 g/kg) or normal saline (10 mL/kg) for seven days, and the effects of pea starch-lauric acid complex on mice were observed. The RS5 treatment significantly attenuated weight loss, splenomega

A preclinical evaluation of cytarabine prodrug nanofibers assembled from cytarabine-lauric acid conjugate toward solid tumors.

Cytarabine (Ara-C) has become cornerstones for the treatment of hatmatological malignancies for several decades; however, it still faces serious challenges in clinical applications due to its side effects such as hand foot syndrome (HFS) and stomatitis. Therefore, considerable researchers have devoted to looking for the new derivative with desirable activity and low toxicity. A new prodrug based on the conjugation of cytarabine with lauric acid (LA-Ara) was synthesized in our group, and it could self-assemble into nanofibers (NFs) in aqueous solution with high drug loading (57 wt%). The lauric

Comparative neurochemical and neuroprotective effects of lauric acid, ribose-cysteine, and levodopa in an α-synuclein Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) entails dopaminergic neuronal loss in a gradual manner, which is typically linked to oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and the neurotransmitter homeostasis disruption. This research compares the neurochemical and neuroprotective impacts of lauric acid (LA), ribose-cysteine (RC), and levodopa (LD) in a transgenic Drosophila melanogaster model where human α-synuclein (α-syn) was expressed in dopaminergic neurons. The transgenic flies received treatment with LA, RC, or LD (250 mg/kg diet) for three weeks and were then evaluated by behavioral assays in conjunction with
