Clinical microbiology and infection : the official publication of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases2010eng
Legionnaires' disease remains an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Disease caused by Legionella pneumophila has been extensively studied, and its clinical characteristics have been well described. There is, however, little information on disease caused by Legionella longbeachae, despite its importance in some countries. We undertook a retrospective review of culture-positive cases of Legionnaires' disease in the Canterbury region of New Zealand over 10 years, in order to compare the clinical features and outcomes of Legionnaires' disease caused by these two species.

Legionella longbeachae is a pathogen of global health importance due to its role in causing Legionnaires' disease (LD), a severe form of community-acquired pneumonia. Throughout the USA and Europe, Legionella pneumophila is often identified as the primary cause of LD, but in countries such as New Zealand and Australia, where testing for non-pneumophila Legionella species is employed systematically, high rates of L. longbeachae are reported. Development of genomic tools to track outbreaks and identify infection sources for L. longbeachae has lagged behind that of L. pneumophila. This study addr

Legionella longbeachae is the leading cause of Legionnaires' disease (LD) in Australasia and has been linked to exposure to compost and potting soils. Adding antimicrobial metal ions such as copper (Cu2+), zinc (Zn2+), and manganese (Mn2+) to potting soils may reduce the load of L. longbeachae bacteria and infection risk. Baseline concentrations of metal ions in leachate from peat, bark dust, bagging base, and an all-purpose potting soil were: iron 0.40-0.99 µg/ml, Cu of 0.003-0.03 µg/ml, Zn 0.01-0.06 µg/ml and Mn 0.11-0.29 µg/ml. Addition of Cu2+ ions to leachate reduced L. longbeachae viabil

Legionella spp. are the causative agents of a severe pneumonia known as Legionnaires' disease. Upon being engulfed by host cells, these environmental bacteria replicate intracellularly in a plasma membrane-derived niche termed Legionella-containing vacuole (LCV) in a way that requires the defective in organelle trafficking/intracellular multiplication (Dot/Icm) protein transporter. Our understanding of interactions between Legionella and its hosts was mostly based on studies of Legionella pneumophila. In this study, we found that the LCVs created by virulent Legionella longbeachae are similarl

Legionella longbeachae is a very uncommon cause of community acquired pneumonia in Western countries. L. longbeachae does not grow on blood agar media and is usually not detected by sputum gram stain or blood culture. Furthermore Legionella urinary antigen testing fails to detect it. In this report we described a 79-year-old man with polymyalgia rheumatica under systemic corticosteroid treatment without other additional risk factors who developed a cultured-proven L. longbeachae community-acquired pneumonia complicated by an acute respiratory distress syndrome with septic shock. This case repo

Legionella longbeachae is an emerging cause of Legionnaires' disease in Europe. We analysed data from the National Infectious Disease Register (NIDR) and the Legionella Reference Laboratory database to characterize L. longbeachae infections and diagnostics in Finland. A total of 41 L. longbeachae patient cases, mainly gardeners' pneumonias and hand wounds, were reported during 1989-2024, with a significant increase after 2019. Patient interviews and environmental sampling linked infections to compost, potting soil or outdoor activities. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) confirmed identical patient

Legionella longbeachae pneumonia is much less common than Legionella pneumophila pneumonia in most of the world and may evade timely diagnosis in settings that rely primarily on urine antigen testing, which detects Legionella pnuemophila serogroup 1 only. It is, however, widely recognized in Australia and New Zealand, where it is endemic and associated with exposure to compost and potting soils, rather than contaminated water systems as seen with L. pneumophila. L. longbeachae can cause a similar spectrum and severity of illness as L. pneumophila. Here we present a case of a 47-year-old man wi

Legionella longbeachae has been frequently identified in composted plant material and can cause Legionnaires' disease (LD). We wanted to determine how frequently L. longbeachae DNA was present on gardeners' gloves, and how long L. longbeachae could persist on inoculated gloves and masks. Volunteers completed a survey of gardening practices and their gardening gloves were tested for L. longbeachae DNA by qPCR. The persistence of viable L. longbeachae was assessed by timed subcultures after inoculation of gardening gloves and masks. Gloves but not masks were used regularly. L. longbeachae was de

Legionella pneumophila and L. longbeachae are two species of a large genus of bacteria that are ubiquitous in nature. L. pneumophila is mainly found in natural and artificial water circuits while L. longbeachae is mainly present in soil. Under the appropriate conditions both species are human pathogens, capable of causing a severe form of pneumonia termed Legionnaires' disease. Here we report the sequencing and analysis of four L. longbeachae genomes, one complete genome sequence of L. longbeachae strain NSW150 serogroup (Sg) 1, and three draft genome sequences another belonging to Sg1 and two

In addition to Legionella pneumophila, about 20 Legionella species have been documented as human pathogens. The majority of infections by non-pneumophila Legionella species occur in immunocompromised and splenectomized patients. Here, we report a case of 'classical' lobar pneumonia caused by Legionella longbeachae in a splenectomized patient receiving corticosteroids for chronic immune thrombocytopenia. Tests for Legionella antigen were negative. L. longbeachae was immediately detected in bronchoalveolar fluid by PCR and subsequently confirmed by culture on legionella-selective media. The feat

Legionella Ltongbeachae is ubiquitously found in both aqueous environments and moist soils worldwide, sometimes causing severe pneumonia. Legionella longbeachae pneumonia can cause severe lower respiratory tract illness leading to fatal outcomes. But Legionella longbeachae is rarely reported in China. Here we present a case of Legionella longbeachae pneumonia detected by NGS in a 73-year-old woman, who was a farmer working in a vegetable greenhouse and was diagnosed as diabetes 2 before. The patient experienced severe chills and fever when she was transfer to our hospital. Anyway, the symptoms

Legionella longbeachae is the commonest Legionella species identified in patients with community-acquired pneumonia in New Zealand. Isolation of the organism on culture is the gold standard for the diagnosis of Legionnaires disease, but it has poor sensitivity (40%) compared with quantitative PCR (qPCR). We have developed a selective decontamination process using glycine, vancomycin, polymyxin, and cycloheximide (GVPC) with immunomagnetic separation (IMS) for culturing L. longbeachae A polyclonal antibody specific for L. longbeachae was produced from New Zealand White rabbits and coupled to to

Legionella pneumophila is the predominant cause of Legionnaires' disease in the United States and Europe, while Legionella longbeachae is the common cause of the disease in Western Australia. Although clinical manifestations by both intracellular pathogens are very similar, recent studies have shown that phagosome biogeneses of both species within human macrophages are distinct (R. Asare and Y. Abu Kwaik, Cell. Microbiol., in press). Most inbred mouse strains are resistant to infection by L. pneumophila, with the exception of the A/J mouse strain, and this genetic susceptibility is associated

Legionella organisms are environmental bacteria and accidental human pathogens that can cause severe pneumonia, termed Legionnaires' disease. These bacteria replicate within a pathogen-derived vacuole termed the Legionella-containing vacuole (LCV). Our understanding of the development and dynamics of this vacuole is based on extensive analysis of Legionella pneumophila. Here, we have characterized the Legionella longbeachae replicative vacuole (longbeachae-LCV) and demonstrated that, despite important genomic differences, key features of the replicative LCV are comparable to those of the LCV o

Chlamydia psittaci infection typically causes a mild respiratory illness in humans. Severe respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation or intensive care therapy is an uncommon development. The aetiological agents causing severe community acquired pneumonia often remain undetermined. Serological tests may aid in diagnosis. We present two cases of fulminant psittacosis, one demonstrating early cross-reactivity with Legionella longbeachae.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Legionella longbeachae is a predominant cause of Legionnaires' disease in some parts of the world, particularly in Australasia. Clinical reports of L. longbeachae infection are limited to case reports or small case series, and culture-confirmed cases.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of L. longbeachae pneumonia in a large case series from Christchurch, New Zealand during a 4-year period when both PCR and cultures were used as routine diagnostic tools for Legionnaires' disease. Cases of Legionella pneumophila pneumonia were reviewed for c

Legionella longbeachae is an environmental bacterium that is the most clinically significant Legionella species in New Zealand (NZ), causing around two-thirds of all notified cases of Legionnaires' disease. Here we report the sequencing and analysis of the geo-temporal genetic diversity of 54 L. longbeachae serogroup 1 (sg1) clinical isolates, derived from cases from around NZ over a 22-year period, including one complete genome and its associated methylome. The 54 sg1 isolates belonged to two main clades that last shared a common ancestor between 95 BCE and 1694 CE. There was diversity at the

Legionella longbeachae is the predominant cause of Legionnaires' disease (LD) in New Zealand. Although serogroup 2 (sg2) does not contain the most clinically significant strain, it is an important cause of disease. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of an sg2 isolate from a patient who was hospitalized with LD.

A legionellosis outbreak at an industrial site was investigated to identify and control the source. Cases were identified from disease notifications, workplace illness records, and from clinicians. Cases were interviewed for symptoms and risk factors and tested for legionellosis. Implicated environmental sources were sampled and tested for legionella. We identified six cases with Legionnaires' disease and seven with Pontiac fever; all had been exposed to aerosols from the cooling towers on the site. Nine cases had evidence of infection with either Legionella pneumophila serogroup (sg) 1 or Leg
