The intraocular lens offers an additional parameter to be considered for the visual rehabilitation of children with traumatic or infantile cataracts. The disadvantages of aphakic spectacles or contact lens have committed many of these eyes to the status of visual cripples. Bearing in mind all of the complications and the lack of long-term follow-up, the IOL warrants careful consideration for use in this group of cataract patients. In this series of 27 patients with a maximum of 18 months' follow-up, it is concluded that the IOL may be successfully implanted and that, thus far, no eye has been

Among 20 million cataract surgeries being performed worldwide every year, approximately 5% are being complicated by posterior capsule rent or zonular dialysis. Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in such cases with intraoperative complications is quite challenging. Our next course of action is to place the IOL in the ciliary sulcus, however, there is a risk of IOL drop into the vitreous in cases of inadequate support. We have described a novel idea of using a suture material through the dialling hole of a three-piece rigid IOL which can be used as a leash to reduce the risk of IOL drop during

Intraocular lens (IOL) exchange may be required after multifocal IOL implantation due to dissatisfaction. Late IOL exchange is more challenging when it is done with capsulotomy. We presented a retrospective case series study enrolling four consecutive eyes reviewing late IOL exchange due to decreased vision and dysphotopsia. High residual hyperopia, astigmatism, and IOL tilt occurred in 3 eyes, respectively. The mean time to the IOL exchange was 15.8 ± 10.63 months. After separation of the adhesions by visco-dissection assisted with a 27-gaze needle and sinskey hook, IOL was explanted. One-pie

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, dislocated intraocular lenses (IOLs) and inadequate capsular support are becoming a challenge for every ophthalmic surgeon. Explantation of dislocated IOL and iris claw IOL (ICIOL) are the techniques that have been used in our ophthalmic department. The aim of this study is to report our technique for retropupillar ICIOL.
METHODS: This study is a retrospective case series. A total of 105 eyes with dislocated IOL from the patients at the Department of Ophthalmology in Santa Maria Hospital, a tertiary reference hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, from January 2012 until January

BACKGROUND: Following cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, loss of accommodation or postoperative presbyopia occurs and remains a challenge. Standard monofocal IOLs correct only distance vision; patients require spectacles for near vision. Accommodative IOLs have been designed to overcome loss of accommodation after cataract surgery.
OBJECTIVES: To define (a) the extent to which accommodative IOLs improve unaided near visual function, in comparison with monofocal IOLs; (b) the extent of compromise to unaided distance visual acuity; c) whether a higher rate of additional c

PURPOSE: To describe the results of the removal of ectopic lenses from patients with Marfan's syndrome using the scleral fixation method.
METHODS: Intraocular lenses (IOLs) were implanted in six eyes affected by lens dislocation (ectopia lentis) using either the scleral fixation method (five eyes) or a silicone IOL in the capsular bag (one eye). Mean patient age ranged from 8-11 years and follow-up ranged from 7-20 months.
RESULTS: Functional success was obtained in all eyes. Postoperative visual acuity was 20/20 to 20/40. One patient showed a dislocation of the IOL in the anterior chamber.

The surgical trauma and the presence of the artificial lens in the eye causes inflammatory reactions. The cellular response is a result of 1) the breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier, 2) foreign body reaction induced by lens material. The presence of cellular deposits (small, fibroblast-like, epithelioid, giant cells) on the surface of intraocular lenses is related to many factors such as surgical technique, risk factors of inflammation, postoperative treatment and the kind of lens material. The aim of this paper is to present contemporary knowledge about cytopathology of intraocular lenses

PURPOSE: The evaluation of postoperative results and complications after traumatic cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty two eyes of 41 patients (31 male and 10 female) aged from 10 to 66 years (mean 37.8) with traumatic cataract were the subject of our study. They were operated on between 1996 and 1997. A penetrating injury in 33 eyes (78.6%) and blunt trauma in 9 eyes (21.4%) caused the cataract. The interval between trauma and cataract surgery ranged from 1 day to 40 years. The mean follow up was 13.5 months. Despite of cataract corneal scars,

OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to determine the visual outcome and indication of secondary posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.
METHODS: The operation was performed on 34 eyes with aphakia in children after separation of posterior iris synechia from posterior capsule and formation of a posterior chamber space large enough to insert an intraocular lens. Based on whether the integrity of the posterior capsule was complete or not, various techniques of secondary IOL implantation were adopted.
RESULTS: The follow-up periods ranged from 6 to 24 months. The results showed that

10 patients of Fuchs' syndrome underwent ECCE with IOL implantation. The etiopathology of this disease, the prevention and management of intra- and post-operative complications were discussed. Three months after the operation, the rate of corneal endothelial cell loss was 23.96%. After an average follow-up of 20 months, 80% of the cases obtained corrected visual acuity of 0.5 and over, indicating that the procedure had been rewarding and safe.

Microphthalmos is a developmental disorder of the eye consisting of a smaller than normal eye. This disorder can present as an isolated condition or associated with other systemic alterations. It is not uncommon for patients with microphthalmos to have congenital cataracts along with other ocular and systemic abnormalities. This paper reports the experience with 11 microphthalmic eyes of seven patients who had primary or secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation over a six-year period from 1985 to 1991. In all cases the IOL had a 13.5 mm or 14.0 mm overall diameter and a 6.0 mm or 6.5 mm o

Seventeen patients, ranging in age from 40 to 86 years, developed pupillary block detected one week to three years after intraocular lens implantation. Sixteen of the implants were anterior chamber intraocular lenses and one was a posterior chamber intraocular lens. Despite iris bombé that closed the anterior chamber angle, many cases were asymptomatic and were discovered fortuitously during routine postoperative examinations. Laser iridotomy or iridectomy eliminated the pupillary block in all 17 cases, but permanent synechial closure of a portion of the anterior chamber angle persisted in mos

Prospective evaluation of extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens (ECCE-posterior chamber IOL) in 234 eyes of 20 diabetics, with and without nonproliferative retinopathy, and 209 nondiabetics demonstrated no statistically significant difference in operative or postoperative complications. A postoperative final visual acuity of 20/40 or better was achieved in 65% of diabetic surgical eyes and in 90% of nondiabetic surgical eyes, a difference that was statistically significant (P = 0.0049). When eyes with diabetic retinopathy or other pre-existing ophthalmic dis

We retrospectively studied secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in 165 aphakic patients (162 eyes) from May 1983 to August 1989. Seventy-five eyes (46.3%) had secondary IOL implantation; these included seven cases of trans-sulcus scleral fixation of the posterior chamber lens. The remaining 87 eyes could not have secondary IOL implantation because of the ocular conditions. The most common reason for secondary implantation was to relieve the discomfort caused by spectacles or contact lenses (56.2%). An anterior chamber lens was used in 43 eyes (57.3%) and a posterior chamber lens in 32
