Disseminated paracoccidioidomycosis in a black lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysopygus) confirmed by histopathology, molecular diagnostics and phylogenetic analysis of DNA from FFPE tissues.

BACKGROUND: Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic mycosis endemic to Latin America, primarily affecting humans. Reports in non-human primates are rare and provide valuable insight into the environmental circulation of Paracoccidioides spp. and the interface between animal and human infection.  CASE REPORT: We describe a case of disseminated PCM in a 13-year-old black lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysopygus) from São Paulo, Brazil. The animal presented neurological signs and marked clinical deterioration, progressing to death within 48 h of the onset of neurological signs. Histopathologic

Safety and immunogenicity of different 17DD yellow fever vaccines in golden-headed tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysomelas): Inhibition of viremia and RNAemia after homologous live-attenuated vaccination.

Yellow fever (YF) is a viral disease that affects both humans and non-human primates (NHPs). Neotropical monkeys are more severely stricken by YF and the impact of the disease can be devastating to the endangered golden-headed lion tamarins (GHLTs, Leontopithecus chrysomelas). Susceptible GHLTs were immunized with the commercial Brazilian YF 17DD live attenuated vaccine or two other experimental non-replicating YF vaccines: a purified whole-virus, b-propiolactone-inactivated vaccine and a plant-derived recombinant subunit vaccine. Safety, immunogenicity and viremia and RNAemia blockade were ch

Leptospira spp., rotavirus, norovirus, and hepatitis E virus surveillance in a wild invasive golden-headed lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas; Kuhl, 1820) population from an urban park in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The world currently faces severe biodiversity losses caused by anthropogenic activities such as deforestation, pollution, the introduction of exotic species, habitat fragmentation, and climate changes. Disease ecology in altered environments is still poorly understood. The golden-headed lion tamarin (GHLT, Leontopithecus chrysomelas) is an endangered species that became invasive in an urban park in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The initially few invasive GHLT individuals became hundreds, adapted to living in proximity to humans and domestic animals. These GHLTs were captured as part of a co

Simian Foamy Virus Prevalence and Evolutionary Relationships in Two Free-Living Lion Tamarin Populations from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Simian foamy virus (SFV) is a retrovirus that infects primates. However, epidemiological studies of SFV are often limited to captive populations. The southeastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest is home to both an endemic, endangered species, Leontopithecus rosalia, and an introduced species, Leontopithecus chrysomelas, to which no data on SFV exist. In this study, we assessed the molecular prevalence of SFV, their viral load, and their phylogenetic relationship in these two species of primates. Genomic DNA was extracted from 48 oral swab samples of L. chrysomelas and 102 of L. rosalia. Quantitative

Epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects of lethal acanthocephalosis in captive neotropical primates.

BACKGROUND: Acanthocephalosis is an important cause of death in captive New World primates (NWP). Once established in a colony, it is extremely difficult to treat and control, quickly spreading among NWP with a high mortality rate. This study aimed to characterize the disease associated with infection with acanthocephalans according to its epidemiological, clinical, and anatomopathological aspects in a captive NWP population. METHODS: From 2010 to 2020, a Brazilian zoo had recurrent deaths of NWP associated to acanthocephalan parasitism. Clinical and pathological profiles of these animals wer

Detection of Leishmania infantum DNA in captive wild mammals from an urban zoo in a visceral leishmaniasis-endemic area of Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a complex zoonotic disease transmitted to humans through the bites of Leishmania-infected phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera:Psychodidae:Phlebotominae). Its transmission dynamics are shaped by environmental, ecological, and anthropogenic factors. Rapid urbanization, landscape modification, and the rising incidence of human and canine VL in endemic cities raise concerns about parasite circulation at the human-wildlife interface, including within captive animal populations housed in urban zoological institutions. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This stud

Evaluation of control and treatment of Gongylonema spp. infections in callitrichids.

Numerous cases of Gongylonema spp. infection with associated pathological lesions and clinical signs were identified in a collection of Goeldi's monkeys (Callimico goeldii) (GMs) at a zoological park during a 3-yr period. An increase in the incidence of clinical signs in the GMs and other callitrichid species prompted an investigation to determine the prevalence of infection within the collection and evaluate treatment protocols. Twenty-one callitrichids [nine GMs, four golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia), six cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus), and two golden-headed lion tamarin

Secondary pneumatization of the maxillary sinus in callitrichid primates: insights from immunohistochemistry and bone cell distribution.

The paranasal sinuses remain elusive both in terms of function and in the proximate mechanism of their development. The present study sought to describe the maxillary sinuses (MSs) in three species of callitrichid primates at birth, a time when secondary pneumatization occurs rapidly in humans. The MSs were examined in serially sectioned and stained slides from the heads of two Callithrix jacchus, one Leontopithecus rosalia, and two Saguinus geoffroyi. Specimens were examined microscopically regarding the distribution of osteoclasts and osteoblasts along the osseous boundaries of the MS and ot

Occurrence of Prosthenorchis elegans in Free-living Primates from the Atlantic Forest of Southern Bahia, Brazil.

Parasite prevalence and abundance are important factors affecting species' conservation. During necropsies on a free-living golden-headed lion tamarin ( Leontopithecus chrysomelas ) and two Wied's marmosets ( Callithrix kuhlii ) in the Atlantic Forest of southern Bahia, Brazil, we collected a large number of adult intestinal parasites that we identified as Prosthenorchis elegans. This parasite is pathogenic for neotropical primates. Prosthenorchis spp. infestation is influenced by diet with increased risk of exposure from ingesting invertebrate intermediate hosts. The biological similarities a

Yellow fever in Brazil threatens successful recovery of endangered golden lion tamarins.

The golden lion tamarin is an endangered primate endemic to Brazil's Atlantic Forest. Centuries of deforestation reduced numbers to a few hundred individuals in isolated forest fragments 80 km from Rio de Janeiro city. Intensive conservation action including reintroduction of zoo-born tamarins into forest fragments 1984-2000, increased numbers to about 3,700 in 2014. Beginning in November 2016, southeastern Brazil experienced the most severe yellow fever epidemic/epizootic in the country in 80 years. In May 2018, we documented the first death of a golden lion tamarin due to yellow fever. We re

Ecobiology of Haemagogus leucocelaenus arbovirus vector in the golden lion tamarin translocation area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Significant pathogens that have resurfaced in humans originate from transmission from animal to human populations. In the Americas, yellow fever cases in humans are usually associated with spillover from non-human primates via mosquitoes. The present study characterized the prevalence of the yellow fever vector Haemagogus leucocelaenus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Atlantic Forest fragment chosen is an area of translocation of the golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), where 10 ovitraps were installed to collect mosquito eggs in Fazenda Três Irmãos, at Silva Jardim city, from March 202

Wildlife sequences of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) identify critical species variants for fibrillization.

Amyloid can be detected in the islets of Langerhans in a majority of type 2 diabetic patients. These deposits have been associated with β-cell death, thereby furthering diabetes progression. Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) amyloidogenicity is quite variable among animal species, and studying this variability could further our understanding of the mechanisms involved in the aggregation process. Thus, the general aim of this study was to identify IAPP isoforms in different animal species and characterize their propensity to form fibrillar aggregates. A library of 23 peptides (fragment 8-32) was

Naturally acquired visceral leishmaniasis in non-human primates in Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a chronic and often fatal protozoal disease that is endemic in Belo Horizonte (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil). Leishmania sp. is an intracellular obligatory parasite of macrophages that can naturally infect several mammalian species. Non-human primates (NHP) have been used as experimental models for infection with Leishmania of the donovani complex. The present report describes a case of visceral leishmaniasis in a black-fronted titi. Among 41 primates kept in captivity in a zoo in Belo Horizonte (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil), one animal, a black-fronted titi (

Neotropical Sylvatic Mosquitoes and Aedes aegypti Are Not Competent to Transmit 17DD Attenuated Yellow Fever Virus from Vaccinated Viremic New World Non-Human Primates.

Beside humans, thousands of non-human primates (NHPs) died during the recent outbreak caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV) in Brazil. Vaccination of NHPs against YFV with the YF 17DD attenuated virus has emerged as a public health strategy, as it would reduce sylvatic transmission while also preserving endangered susceptible species. The hypothesis of establishing an uncontrolled transmission of this attenuated virus in nature was raised. We assessed vector competence of four sylvatic mosquito species, Haemagogus leucocelaenus, Haemagogus janthinomys/capricornii, Sabethes albiprivus, and Sab

Yellow fever outbreak temporarily changes dispersal patterns in an endangered primate.

Disease outbreaks can severely affect populations in the wild. However, their consequences on individual social behaviour and population demography are poorly understood. We used a multi-site capture-recapture model to investigate the impacts of a yellow fever outbreak on the endangered golden lion tamarin Leontopithecus rosalia, in the fragmented Atlantic forest, Brazil. Annual adult survival rate severely declined in 2017-2018, coinciding with the outbreak period. Simultaneously, dispersal patterns changed temporarily, with a reduction of settlement time for individuals dispersing within the

High infection prevalences by Trypanosoma minasense in non-human primates from the Southeast region of Brazil.

Non-human primates (NHPs) are reported as exclusive hosts of Trypanosoma minasense, whose transmission cycle remains unknown. We investigated trypanosomatid infections in 194 NHPs of nine species from the Brazilian Southeast region. We evaluated the impact of landscape composition and forest fragmentation on T. minasense infection. In the Atlantic Forest areas, Sapajus nigritus presented a higher positivity for T. minasense on the blood slides (60.9%) compared to Callithrix spp. (24.6%) and Alouatta guariba clamitans (20.7%); molecular analysis revealed higher infection prevalences in S. nigri
