Bacteremia caused by a novel isolate resembling leptotrichia species in a neutropenic patient.

We report a case of Leptotrichia species bacteremia in a patient undergoing treatment for acute myelogenous leukemia. Like previously reported Leptotrichia species, this is a gram-variable, pleomorphic rod that is catalase negative and utilizes glucose and sucrose. However, it is more fastidious than previously reported isolates of Leptotrichia and may represent a novel species.

Leptotrichia buccalis bacteremia in patients with cancer: report of four cases and review.

Leptotrichia buccalis, an anaerobic gram-negative rod, is part of the normal oral flora and has rarely been isolated from clinical material. We describe four patients with neutropenia and progressive malignancy who had symptomatic L. buccalis bacteremia, and we review an additional four cases from the literature. The mean age of the patients was 31 years (range, 7-73 years), with an equal number of males and females. The number of positive blood cultures in each case ranged from one to four (mean, two); these cultures became positive after 48-120 hours (median, 54 hours). All tested isolates w

Leptotrichia buccalis bacteremia in patients treated in a single bone marrow transplant unit.

We describe four cases of bacteremia due to Leptotrichia buccalis (an organism that is part of the normal human oral flora) that occurred in a bone marrow transplant unit over a 3-month period. All of the patients were neutropenic, all had mucositis or esophagitis, and all were receiving antimicrobial prophylaxis with ciprofloxacin and vancomycin (drugs to which Leptotrichia is resistant). One patient died of adult respiratory distress syndrome; the others had minimal symptoms. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis of bacterial DNA digested with Sma 1 demonstrated a unique banding pattern for each

Identification of Leptotrichia goodfellowii infective endocarditis by next-generation sequencing of 16S rDNA amplicons.

The oral aerotolerant anaerobe Leptotrichia goodfellowii is an unusual cause of endocarditis and is amenable to treatment with β-lactam antibiotics. Because this organism is difficult to identify by conventional methods, molecular detection is a key diagnostic modality. Broad-range 16S rDNA PCR followed by Sanger sequencing constitute the first-line molecular approach, yet poor DNA quality, contaminating DNA, or low template quantity make identification challenging. Here we report a case of culture-negative, aortic and mitral valve endocarditis in a 66-yr-old woman with a history of cardiomyop

Endocarditis caused by a Leptotrichia buccalis-like bacterium in a patient with a prosthetic aortic valve.

The isolation of a Leptotrichia buccalis-like bacterium from the blood of a patient with endocarditis associated with a prosthetic aortic valve is reported. The organism was isolated from different blood cultures. It was similar but not completely identical to Leptotrichia buccalis. The microbiological identification was confirmed independently by three laboratories, including two reference institutions. The case and the characteristics of the microorganism are reported.

Identification of Leptotrichia hofstadii as a Post-Treatment Recurrence Biomarker in Severe Early Childhood Caries.

Recurrence remains a significant challenge following the treatment of Severe Early Childhood Caries (S-ECC). This study aimed to identify candidate recurrence-related biomarkers for S-ECC and elucidate their potential pathogenic mechanisms. Through metagenomic sequencing of supragingival plaque from 32 children at one month post-treatment, we identified Leptotrichia hofstadii as one of the potential biomarkers for S-ECC recurrence (AUC = 0.8438 for the sequencing set and AUC = 0.75 for the validation set). A microproteome screen identifies immunomodulatory bacterial microproteins encoded in expanded gene arrays in Leptotrichia.

The human microbiome exerts broad influence in health and disease with associative studies implicating the microbiome in influencing immunity, cancer outcomes, and neurodegeneration. However, the molecular mediators of microbe-host communication remain poorly defined. Bacterial microproteins from the microbiome represent a largely uncharacterized class of potential regulators of host immunity. Here, we utilize functional genomics to interrogate 3,552 microproteins in order to identify novel microbial-immune interactions. We constructed a microproteome library from microbial metagenomic dataset

Bacterial vaginosis-associated bacteria in men: association of Leptotrichia/Sneathia spp. with nongonococcal urethritis.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 45% of nongonococcal urethritis cases have no identified etiology. Novel bacteria recently associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV) in women may be involved. We evaluated the association of idiopathic nongonococcal urethritis and 5 newly described BV-associated bacteria (BVAB). METHODS: Heterosexual men 16 years or older attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic in Seattle, Washington, from May 2007 to July 2011 and negative for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Ureaplasma urealyticum-biovar2 were el

Leptrotrichia Amnionii, an emerging pathogen of postpartum endometritis.

Leptotrichia amnionii, a recently described fastidious gram-negative anaerobic bacterium, is an opportunistic pathogen of the female urogenital tract. We report a rare case of L. amnionii bacteremia in a patient with postpartum endometritis which was successfully treated by amoxicilline-clavunalate. There is more and more evidence that L. amnonii has its role in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and postpartum endometritis.

Microbiota Composition in Upper Respiratory Tracts of Healthy Children in Shenzhen, China, Differed with Respiratory Sites and Ages.

The upper respiratory tract (URT) is home to various microbial commensals, which function as competitors to pathogens and help train the immune system. However, few studies have reported the normal microbiota carriage in the URT of healthy Chinese children. In this study, we performed a 16S rDNA gene sequencing analysis of 83 anterior nares (ANs), 60 nasopharynx (NP), and 97 oropharynx (OP) samples from 98 healthy children in Shenzhen, China (≤12 years of age). The microbiota in ANs and NP is the same at different ages and typical species in these sites include Moraxella, Staphylococcus, Coryn

Comparison of the Microbiota and Inorganic Anion Content in the Saliva of Patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-Free Individuals.

The oral cavity is one of the most complex microbial environments; however, the complex nature of the salivary microbiota and the level of inorganic anions in the saliva of subjects with and without gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are poorly understood. The primary goals of this pilot research were to assess differences in salivary bacterial community composition and inorganic anion concentrations between patients with GERD and GERD-free people. Thus, the salivary microbiota within both groups was dominated by these genera: Streptococcus, Prevotella, Porphyromonas, Veillonella, Neisseri

Metagenomic profiling of plaque microbiota in Indian subjects: identified hidden ecological tapestry.

Dental plaque biofilms are the primary etiologic factor for various chronic oral infectious diseases. In recent years, dental plaque shows enormous potential to know about an individual microbiota. Various microbiome studies of oral cavity from different geographical locations reveals abundance of microbial species. Although, the representation of Indian population in this respect is limited, which make us curious to undergo this study. This study investigates the dental plaque microbiota of North Indian individuals based on their age, gender, and dietary patterns; specifically, food preferenc
