Feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukemia virus and Bartonella species in stray cats on St Kitts, West Indies.

Stray cats trapped in various areas of Basseterre, the capital of St Kitts in the West Indies, were tested for infection with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) using commercial kits. Of 99 (51 male and 48 female) cats trapped in 2006/7, 15% (12 males and three females) were positive for FIV while none were positive for FeLV. Of 72 (41 males and 31 females) cats trapped in 2009, 14% (nine males and one female) were positive for FIV while none were positive for FeLV. Polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed DNA of Bartonella species in whole blood collected

Transduction of Notch2 in feline leukemia virus-induced thymic lymphoma.

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is thought to induce neoplastic diseases in infected cats by a variety of mechanisms, including the transduction of host proto-oncogenes. While FeLV recombinants that encode cellular sequences have been isolated from tumors of naturally infected animals, the acquisition of an unrelated host gene has never been documented in an experimental FeLV infection. We isolated recombinant FeLV proviruses encoding feline Notch2 sequences from thymic lymphoma DNA of two cats inoculated with the molecularly cloned virus FeLV-61E. Four recombinant genomes were identified, three

Acute Myeloid Leukemia With Suspected Basophilic Differentiation in a Cat Negative for Feline Leukemia Virus.

An 8-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented with anorexia and weight loss. A complete blood count revealed mild nonregenerative anemia, circulating blasts, dysplastic granulocytes, and basophilia. Both feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus tested negative upon SNAP testing using peripheral blood and PCR using bone marrow. Bone marrow aspiration revealed an increased number of blast cells and basophils, and some blast cells were positive for MPO staining. Based on the basophilic lineages observed in the peripheral blood and bone marrow, acute myeloid le

Clinical and Molecular Features of Feline Foamy Virus and Feline Leukemia Virus Co-Infection in Naturally-Infected Cats.

Feline foamy virus (FFV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) belong to the Retroviridae family. While disease has not been reported for FFV infection, FeLV infection can cause anemia and immunosuppression (progressive infection). Co-infection with FFV/FeLV allows evaluation of the pathogenic potential and epidemiology of FFV infection in cats with FeLV pathology. Blood and buccal swab samples from 81 cats were collected in Rio de Janeiro. Plasma was serologically tested for FeLV. DNA extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear cells and buccal swabs was used to PCR detect FFV and FeLV. A qPCR was

Bone marrow necrosis in a cat infected with feline leukemia virus.

A one-year old castrated male cat was admitted to the hospital with vomiting and diarrhea. Laboratory examination revealed pancytopenia and positive for FeLV antigen. A bone marrow examination indicated necrosis of the nucleated cells. Based on these findings, the cat was diagnosed as bone marrow necrosis. Pancytopenia was effectively treated with corticosteroids. Re-examination of the bone marrow confirmed a recovery of normal hematopoietic cells with a infiltration of many macrophages. It is strongly suspected that the bone marrow necrosis in this case could be associated with a bone marrow

Influence of thymectomy on the susceptibility of cats to feline leukemia virus and lymphosarcoma.

Twelve cats were thymectomized at 5 weeks of age. Six of these cats were inoculated at 8 weeks of age and 6 at 4 months of age with the Rickard (R) strain of feline leukemia virus (FeLV), which produces a high incidence of thymic lymphosarcoma. Two groups of age-matched nonthymectomized cats were inoculated with the same FeLV-R stock. Thymectomy prior to FeLV infection had no influence on the induction of viremia or the incidence of lymphosarcoma. In the FeLV-inoculated nonthymectomized cats, lymphosarcoma developed in the thymus. In the thymectomized cats, lymphosarcoma developed in the intes

Molecular and clinical study on prevalence of feline herpesvirus type 1 and calicivirus in correlation with feline leukemia and immunodeficiency viruses.

Upper respiratory tract diseases (URTD) are common clinical problem in cats worldwide. Feline calicivirus (FCV) and feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) are the main primary pathogens. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) are also among the most common infectious diseases of cats which suppress the immunity. Oropharyngeal and conjunctival swabs and blood samples were taken from 16 cats with clinical signs of URTD and 26 clinically healthy cats. PCR and RT-PCR were used to detect FHV/FIV or FCV/FeLV infections, respectively. Feline calicivirus was detected in all ca

Cyclic hematopoiesis associated with feline leukemia virus infection in two cats.

Cyclic oscillations in the numbers of blood elements were detected in 2 cats with FeLV infection. Periodic neutropenia, followed by a return to normal neutrophil numbers, was detected in both cats. The mean cycle duration was 11.8 days, with a range of 8 to 14 days. Just before the return of normal neutrophil numbers, monocytosis developed. In 1 cat, cyclic variations in the number of reticulocytes and platelets also were detected. Bone marrow aspirates obtained during periods of neutropenia had a predominance of progranulocytes in the myeloid cell line. myeloid hyperplasia, with numerous segm

Feline leukemia virus-negative acute lymphoid B-cell aleukemic leukemia in a cat with prolonged survival.

A 13-year-old feline leukemia virus-negative cat was diagnosed with acute lymphoid B-cell aleukemic leukemia. The diagnosis was based on the combination of pancytopenia, large and atypical round cells present on liver and splenic cytology, bone marrow cytology and histopathology showing a majority nucleated population of atypical blast cells, immunohistochemistry, and a lack of malignant lymphoblasts observed in the peripheral blood. The cat was initially treated with L-asparaginase, vincristine, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, and prednisolone, which led to a resolution of the cytopenias. Afte

Suspected myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm in a feline leukemia virus-negative cat.

A 10-year-old castrated Domestic Short-Haired cat was presented to a primary care veterinarian for a wellness examination and laboratory examination for monitoring of diabetes mellitus. The CBC revealed marked thrombocytosis, leukopenia and macrocytic, normochromic anemia. The cat tested negative for FeLV and feline immunodeficiency virus, but was positive for Mycoplasma haemominutum by PCR. Hematologic abnormalities were not responsive to therapy, so a repeat CBC and a bone marrow aspiration for cytology were performed. Additional blood smear findings included anisocytosis with megaloblastic

Diseases associated with spontaneous feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection in cats.

More than 2000 cats sent for necropsy in order to provide a diagnosis were investigated immunohistologically using paraffin sections for the presence of a persistent infection with feline leukemia virus (FeLV). The spectrum of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases associated significantly with FeLV infection was determined statistically. Three-quarters of the cats with persistent FeLV infections died of non-neoplastic diseases and about 23% died of tumors, nearly exclusively those of the leukemia/lymphoma disease complex. A strong association with liver degeneration, icterus and a FeLV-associ

Phylogenetic identification of feline leukemia virus A and B in cats with progressive infection developing into lymphoma and leukemia.

To date, only a few studies have examined the impacts of feline leukemia virus (FeLV) subgroups on disease development in spontaneously infected cats. The present study identified FeLV-A and FeLV-B subgroups in cats with lymphoma and leukemia and explored the phylogenetic relationships of env sequences. Twenty-six cats with lymphoma (n=16) or leukemia (n=10) were selected. FeLV p27 antigen positivity was determined using ELISA, and proviral DNA in blood samples was detected using nested PCR. Positive animals in both tests were classified as cases of FeLV progressive infection and subjected to

Risk factors and clinical and laboratory findings associated with feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia virus infections in Bangkok, Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) are retroviruses associated with chronic and neoplastic diseases in domestic and non-domestic cats. There has been increasing interest in the clinical importance of feline retroviruses in Thailand and the identification of associated risk factors in domestic cats. To prevent the spread of retroviral diseases and improve the management of retrovirus-infected cats, risk factors and associated clinical laboratory data must be clearly understood. This study aimed to identify the influence of household, lifesty

Infection by Mycoplasma spp., feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia virus in cats from an area endemic for visceral leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been increasingly recognized in cats living in areas endemic for the disease. Co-infection with Leishmania infantum and other infectious agents is well established in dogs. However, for cats, data on co-infections with L. infantum and other infectious agents are still sparse. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of vector-borne pathogens, Mycoplasma spp., feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) in cats from an area endemic for VL in southeastern Brazil. RESULTS: Of the 90 cats, eight (8.9%) were infected

Feline leukemia virus infection as a potentiating cofactor for the primary and secondary stages of experimentally induced feline immunodeficiency virus infection.

Preexistent feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection greatly potentiated the severity of the transient primary and chronic secondary stages of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection. Of 10 FeLV-FIV carrier cats, 5 died of experimentally induced FIV infection, compared with 2 deaths in 10 cats infected only with FeLV and 1 death in 7 cats infected only with FIV. FIV-infected cats with preexistent FeLV infections developed severe depression, anorexia, fever, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, and leukopenia 4 to 6 weeks after infection and were moribund within 2 weeks of the onset of signs
