[Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (ATL)].

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a distinct malignancy of CD3+/CD4+/CD8-/CD25+/CCR4+/FoxP3+ or -/TdT- Treg/Th2 cells that is etiologically associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1), which is endemic in several regions in the world including southwest Japan. ATL is a rare malignancy and is a single HTLV-1-mediated disease entity with diverse molecular features. Additionally, ATL clinical features and prognosis are diverse, leading to subtype classification into acute, lymphomatous, chronic, and smoldering types according to organ involvement and LDH and calcium leve

Familial adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.

Clinical and laboratory data are described for two siblings who both developed adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma resulting from infection by human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I). These findings suggest that genetic factors or virus-specific factors may determine which HTLV-I-infected individuals will develop leukemia.

[ATL (adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma)].

128 cases of ATL (adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma) were divided into 3 subgroups, 70 cases of acute type, 19 cases of chronic type and 39 cases of lymphoma type, and their prognosis were evaluated. Median survival time from the onset of acute type using Kaplan-Meier method was 8 months, that of lymphoma type was 14 months and that of chronic type was 50 months. Median survival time from the start of treatment of acute type was 5 months, that of lymphoma type was 11 months and that of chronic type was 22 months. Relatively short median survival time of chronic type may be due to they had some du

Human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus: the retrovirus of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.

Human T (thymus-derived)-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV) is a new retrovirus first isolated from T-cell lines from a patient with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma from the southeastern United States. Closely related viruses have since been isolated from several patients with adult T-cell leukemia and lymphoma (and some normal persons) from different areas of the world. HTLV is not a genetically transmitted endogenous virus of humans, but it rather is acquired by postzygotic infection. Natural antibodies to several purified viral proteins have been observed in infected individuals. HTLV is transmi

Anti-ATLA (antibody to adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma virus-associated antigen)-negative adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma.

Five cases of adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) having typical clinicohematologic and morphologic features but negative for anti-ATLA [antibody to ATL virus (ATLV)-associated antigen (ATLA)] are presented. Some differences in immunologic, epidemiologic, and serologic data between anti-ATLA-positive and -negative ATLs are also described. Expression of ATLA in early primary cultured leukemic cells was found to be negative in three patients tested (Cases 1, 2 and 4), however, a long-term cultured cell line, ATL-6A, derived from peripheral blood leukemia cells from Case 1, was found to express

The human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus associated with American adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.

The human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV) is a novel type-C retrovirus isolated from patients with T-lymphoproliferative malignancies. Thirteen cases of HTLV-associated malignancy from US centers were studied in detail. Ten of these cases share common clinical features and define a typical virus-associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). All ten patients presented with Ann Arbor stage IV lymphoma because of skin involvement, bone marrow involvement, or lymphomatous leptomeningitis. Lymphadenopathy occurred in 7 of 10 patients at presentation, and the malignant cells were cytologica

Childhood T-cell malignancy resembling adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.

We describe two childhood cases of a T-cell malignancy indistinguishable from nonendemic, idiopathic adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. The cases illustrate the heterogeneity of nonendemic, idiopathic ATLL, including the presence of mediastinal masses and more heterogeneous immunologic markers than endemic cases, and represent the two youngest cases of ATLL yet described. The differential diagnosis of nonendemic, idiopathic ATLL is discussed.

[Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. Therapeutic aspects].

UNLABELLED: CONVENTIONAL CHEMOTHERAPY: Complete remission of aggressive ATL (acute or lymphomatous forms) can be achieved in about 40% of the patients with conventional chemotherapy, but early relapse and infectious complications is the rule. For painless and chronic ATL, chemotherapy does not appear to be useful and can aggravate the immunodepression. NEW THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES: Encouraging results have been obtained with a combination regimen using an antiretroviral agent (AZT) and interferon alpha. Response rate has been high with good tolerance. In responders, the survival rate is better

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma in Brooklyn.

Fifteen patients with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) were identified in less than a two-year period in the Crown Heights-Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, NY. All patients were black; nine patients originated from the Caribbean islands and six from the southern United States. Two of the patients were father and daughter, the first evidence of familial occurrence in the United States. Their clinical course was similar to that of previously described patients with this disorder. To our knowledge, these 15 patients represent the largest series of ATLL reported in the United States. W

Adult T-Cell Leukemia-Lymphoma during Pregnancy.

Adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) is an uncommon highly aggressive T-cell lymphoma associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection. It is rarely encountered during pregnancy and is particularly challenging to treat due to its aggressive nature and because of the lack of robust data on optimal chemotherapy. We report a case of a Jamaican immigrant diagnosed with ATL during pregnancy.
