Patients with lepromatous leprosy and tuberculoid leprosy, together with normal aged matched controls, were tested for in vitro immunoreactivity against a panel of soluble extracts prepared from normal human tissues. The immune status of a group of sheep naturally infected with hydatid cysts was investigated. Low specific anti-hydatid antibody (Sab) titres and negative results in intradermal and leucocyte migration tests occurred in hosts with high hydatid antigen-stimulated lymphocyte transformation (LT). Cell immunity was followed in patients with malignant melanoma of the uveal tissue with the aid of LAI (leukocyte adherence inhibition assay). The LAI test proved positive in 59 out of 65 patients with histological evidence of malignancy of the melanoma (90.7%). The test was repeated three to six months following excision of the tumor from the eye in 48 patients and in 19 of them (39.6%) it was found to be negative. All these patients have survived and after a mean lapse of 2.5 years following the surgical intervention no metastases have been observed. As against this, LAI positivity persisted

Cellular immunology is rapidly becoming an important and clinically relevant area for the practitioner of clinical laboratory immunology. At present, most of the laboratory test procedures in this area depend on observations of biologic phenomena; however, the rapid developments in this area show promise that within the next decade we will be dealing with identification and quantitation of well defined chemical entities that form the basis of cellular immune interactions. These promising developments will hopefully resolve many of the quality control problems that plague us in the laboratory.

Humoral antitumor response of Lewis lung tumor-bearing mice was measured by humoral leukocyte adherence inhibition (H-LAI) test. It is established that histamine in the concentration of 10(-4)-10(-5) M possesses an inhibitory effect in the lymphocyte adherence inhibition test in patients with breast cancer. Using specific antagonists (H1-blocker dimedrol and H2-blocker cimetidine) it is shown that the revealed histaminergic suppression of the lymphocyte adherence inhibition is mediated through the stimulating influence of histamine on H2-receptors.
