OBJECTIVES: There is cumulative evidence in the literature supporting a potential role of faecal calprotectin (FCP) as a biomarker for gut inflammation in spondyloarthritis (SpA). However its relevance in undifferentiated SpA (USpA) is still uncertain. The aim of the current study is to assess the diagnostic significance of FCP levels in patients with differentiated and undifferentiated SpA.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 52 differentiated SpA, 33 USpA and 50 controls could be included. For all patients, clinical evaluation, routine laboratory investigations, FCP levels, and occult blood in

S100A9/S100A8 (calprotectin), a member of the S100 protein family, has been shown to play a pivotal role in innate immunity activation. Calprotectin plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as it triggers chemotaxis, phagocyte migration and modulation of neutrophils and macrophages. Higher calprotectin levels have been found in synovial fluid, plasma, and serum from RA patients. Recent studies have demonstrated better correlations between serum or plasma calprotectin and composite inflammatory disease activity indexes than c-reactive protein (CRP) or the erythroc

BACKGROUND: Finding easier and less invasive biologic biomarker in the clinical specimen of systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients can be effective in diagnosing and treating SSc-associated multisystem diseases. The complex of S100A8 and S100A9 (Calprotectin) is an easily available prognostic biomarker that secretes from immune cells and is necessary for initiating the immune response to noninfectious inflammation processes. The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Calprotectin in specimen of SSc patients. We reviewed the evidence for Calprotectin in diagnostic and prognostic of SSc

Aspergillus fumigatus can invade the lungs of immunocompromised individuals causing a life-threatening disease called invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). To grow in the lungs, A. fumigatus obtains from the host all nutrients, including zinc. In living tissues, however, most zinc is tightly bound to zinc-binding proteins. Moreover, during infection the bioavailability of zinc can be further decreased by calprotectin, an antimicrobial Zn/Mn-chelating protein that is released by neutrophils in abscesses. Nevertheless, A. fumigatus manages to uptake zinc from and grow within the lungs of susce

Acute pancreatitis in children in Japan is often caused by an anatomical abnormality of the pancreatic and bile duct, resulting in fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Crohn's disease, however, is a chronic granulomatous inflammatory bowel disease with ulcerative lesions of the intestinal tract of unknown cause that occurs mainly in young people, with symptoms similar to those of acute pancreatitis. We report a case of acute pancreatitis diagnosed in a patient not only with incomplete fusion of the pancreatic duct but also with Crohn's disease. A 14-year-old girl, hea

The alarmin calprotectin (S100A8/A9) is thought to drive a cytokine storm, a hallmark of severe COVID-19. Recent studies report circulating S100A8/A9 levels can distinguish COVID-19 severity but have only been conducted in non-U.S. cohorts and mainly focus on serum S100A8/A9 levels. Thus, we quantified S100A8/A9 in serum and urine samples from a hospital cohort in St. Louis, Missouri, to expand the understanding of S100A8/A9 as a prognostic biomarker for COVID-19. Elevated S100A8/A9 serum levels were observed in ICU patients (n = 49, p = 0.0370) and patients with fatal cases of COVID-19 (n = 7

PURPOSE: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a serious and potentially lethal mental disorder characterised by a deliberate quest to reduce one's weight. It can have multiple physical and psychological consequences. The clinical presentation of AN can include gastrointestinal symptoms, however, the pathophysiology of these symptoms in the context of AN remains uncertain. It is hypothesised that patients with AN may have an increase in intestinal permeability, which could lead to an increase in faecal calprotectin (fCP), a marker of intestinal inflammation. No relation between AN and elevation of fCP has

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease characterized by erythematous plaques that can extend along the entire skin surface. In the latest years, it has been shown that serum calprotectin correlated strongly with several inflammatory biomarkers. Since high levels of calprotectin have been found in psoriatic lesions, it is of paramount importance to investigate the role of serum calprotectin as a possible novel diagnostic marker of psoriasis. Aim of our prospective pilot study was to assess the level of serum calprotectin in psoriatic patients.

BACKGROUND: Based on clinical and genetic associations, axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are suspected to have a linked pathogenesis. Gut dysbiosis, intrinsic to IBD, has also been observed in axSpA. It is, however, not established to what degree gut dysbiosis is associated with axSpA disease severity. The objective of this study was to compare gut dysbiosis frequency between controls, non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA), and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients and investigate whether gut dysbiosis is cross-sectionally associated with axSpA

BACKGROUND: Fecal calprotectin is a valuable non-invasive marker for intestinal inflammation and contributes to the selection of patients with suspected inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) for endoscopy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of three automated immunoassays for fecal calprotectin (FC), fecal lactoferrin (FL) and fecal alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1AT) for diagnosis and follow-up of IBD, to investigate if automated analysis of this biomarker profile may further improve the diagnostic process, and to compare them to manual ELISA tests from different manufacturers.

OBJECTIVE: Neutrophils are important in host defence. However, neutrophils are also linked to inflammation and organ damage. The purpose of this study was to assess whether markers of neutrophil activation are increased in PMR.
METHODS: Levels of immune complexes (IC), calprotectin and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) were measured in plasma of healthy individuals (n = 30) and patients with PMR (n = 60), at flare and upon treatment with glucocorticoids using ELISA. Plasma-mediated neutrophil activation was assessed in presence of an FcγRIIA inhibitory antibody (IV.3).
RESULTS: Plasma le

Fibrosis is a progressive and irreversible mechanism affecting any organ. During tissue injury, fibroblast activation is necessary for wound healing but the uncontrolled accumulation of fibrotic tissue leads to local organ damage. The fibrotic process involves the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix components and inflammatory mediators. Since sustained inflammation precedes fibrosis, the involvement of immune cells, like neutrophils, monocytes and macrophages, is crucial to elucidate its pathogenesis. These immune cells release proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and also pro

BACKGROUND: Calprotectin is a calcium-binding-S100-protein synthetized mainly in neutrophils which has been demonstrated to be an accurate biomarker of the presence of these cells. Gut barrier dysfunction in patients with advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD), in addition to the lack of noninvasive tools for diagnosis and prognosis of cirrhosis decompensations, has raised interest in this biomarker.
AIMS: Our aim is to summarize the current evidence regarding the role of calprotectin in terms of its diagnostic and prognostic utility in ACLD.
METHODS: We performed a systematic search (PROSPER
