Selected list of books and journals for the small medical library.

The introduction to this revised list (seventeenth version) of 610 books and 141 journals addresses the origin, three decades ago, of the "Selected List of Books and Journals for the Small Medical Library," and the accomplishments of the late Alfred N. Brandon in helping health sciences librarians, and especially hospital librarians, to envision what collection development and a library collection are all about. This list is intended as a selection guide for the small or medium-size library in a hospital or similar facility. More realistically, it can function as a core collection for a librar

Evidence-based practice.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is spreading in popularity in many health care disciplines. One of its main features is the reliance on the partnership among hard scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and individual patient needs and choices. Librarians play an important role in the spread of EBP because of the importance of identifying and retrieving appropriate literature from various sources for use in making health care decisions. This article gives an overview of how to search for therapy, diagnosis, etiology, and prognosis both for original studies and secondary publications such as sys

Stoking the fire: impact and expansion of the hot topics service.

The current awareness service, Hot Topics, continues to promote and enhance library resources and services, support evidence-based practice, and librarian participation in research projects and studies. Participant feedback from across three hospitals reflects that the service, in part, positively impacts education, personal/professional development, and evidence-based practice projects. The strategic expansion of the service to a fourth hospital is a continuation of the librarians' support of both the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet and Joint Commission reaccreditation efforts.

New nurses apply only basic source evaluation criteria but realize their skills are lacking: More sophisticated approaches to teaching evaluation skills are required.

BACKGROUND: While information evaluation is an essential component of evidence based practice, it remains unclear how nurses perceive their own source evaluation skills and what evaluation criteria they typically apply. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine nurses' self-reported confidence in their evaluation skills and their actual source evaluation ability. The findings will guide information literacy instruction. METHODS: A questionnaire asked recently graduated nurses from four institutions in the Intermountain West (USA) to rate their confidence in evaluating information and to provi

Circuit librarianship: a twentieth anniversary appraisal.

The twentieth anniversary of circuit librarianship is a fitting occasion to reflect on its history and success. The tradition of circuit riders is traced and the hallmarks and achievements of circuit librarian programs are described. Providing information services to remote health professionals has been a longstanding concern of medical librarianship, and it is presently a major focus of the National Library of Medicine. It is suggested that widespread adoption of circuit librarianship would not only satisfy the information needs of unserved health professionals but could enhance the image of

When patrons "click" with the library's literature searches: using data from a novel link generation process to assess patron engagement with literature search results.

INTRODUCTION: One of the core services the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Virtual Library (WRHAVL) provides is literature searching for healthcare staff. Librarians send results to patrons as a reference list with links to the items identified. To improve access to the library's collection, and to understand patrons' engagement, the library developed a novel process for generating trackable links. Link and click data were analyzed to assess patron engagement with the literature search service. METHODS: Leveraging the link management tool Short.io and a Visual Basic for Applications macro,

Development and assessment of a low-health-literacy, pictographic adrenal insufficiency action plan.

OBJECTIVES: Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is an overall rare disorder characterized by the chronic need for pharmacotherapy to prevent threat to life. The Pediatric Endocrine Society has recommended the use of clinical action tools to improve patient education and help guide acute management of AI. We aimed to develop and assess an easy-to-use, patient-friendly, evidence-based, personalized pictogram-based adrenal insufficiency action plan (AIAP) to aid in the management of AI in children. METHODS: Patients/caregivers (P/Cs) responded to surveys which measured the concepts of transparency, trans

Bridging the divide: addressing gaps in Australian health library services.

Access to evidence-based information is vital for safe, effective health care, yet Australia's health library services are increasingly fragmented and inequitable. This perspective highlights the critical role of clinical libraries and professional librarians, revealing gaps across hospitals, professions, and jurisdictions. It argues that Open Access and university libraries cannot meet clinicians' practical needs and calls for a nationally coordinated strategy, including a unified portal, harmonised standards, and workforce planning, to ensure all healthcare professionals can access and apply

Readiness for System-Wide Integration of Nursing Evidence-Based Practice.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, patient safety metrics decreased. A health care organization measured the culture and readiness for evidence-based practice (EBP) and its effect on improving the quality of care. This column describes the results of a quality improvement project focused on the use of EBP by nurses, scientists, and medical librarians within an organization as well as the effect of EBP knowledge and culture. It shows the effect of professional development on sustaining EBP and improving the delivery of care.

Mapping the pathways to health sciences librarianship: reflections and future implications from an immersion session.

OBJECTIVE: Many health sciences librarians enter the profession without specific health sciences training. Some LIS programs have health sciences courses or tracks, but health sciences training within an LIS program is only one path to entering health sciences librarianship. To develop a map of pathways into health sciences librarianship, an immersion session at the Medical Library Association conference in 2022 asked health sciences librarians to share how they entered the profession. METHODS: The immersion session was structured in three parts: facilitator introductions, small group discuss

Online patient education: results of a content analysis of disempowering language in patient education materials about type 1 diabetes.

Global health organizations urge the use of empowering language in patient education for type 1 diabetes (T1D). Twenty-nine online patient education materials (PEMs) were assessed in the first phase of a content analysis examining how disempowering terminology is used in both frequency and context. All of the PEMs used disempowering terms, were primarily from the U.S. (70%), and authored by health care providers (34%). Imperative terms carried the highest word count (54%) and mean occurrence rates. Results suggest online PEMs may benefit from regular updates to improve health literacy, proving

History of the Medical Library Association's credentialing program.

Since the Medical Library Association (MLA) adopted the Code for the Training and Certification of Medical Librarians in 1949, MLA members have reviewed and revised the program regularly. This paper traces the history of MLA's professional recognition program to illustrate how the program has changed over time and to identify the issues that have surrounded it. These issues include the value of the program to individual members, cost to MLA, appropriate entry requirements, certification examinations, and recertification requirements. The development and operation of MLA's current credentialing

3D printing: making things at the library.

3D printers are a new technology that creates physical objects from digital files. Uses for these printers include printing models, parts, and toys. 3D printers are also being developed for medical applications, including printed bone, skin, and even complete organs. Although medical printing lags behind other uses for 3D printing, it has the potential to radically change the practice of medicine over the next decade. Falling costs for hardware have made 3D printers an inexpensive technology that libraries can offer their patrons. Medical librarians will want to be familiar with this technolog

Do pathogens lurk in library books?

The discovery of pathogenic bacteria in the late 19th century led librarians to ask whether their books might spread disease. Microbiological investigations over the following decades found that certain bacteria could be isolated at low levels from books used by persons carrying infections. UK public health legislation prohibited the return of library books from households where a case of notifiable disease had dwelt, and this idea was taken up to varying degrees in Australian states and New Zealand. Libraries enthusiastically promoted themselves as hygienic and many put in place likely ineffe
