The associations between staffing hours and quality of care indicators in long-term care.

BACKGROUND: Long-term care (LTC) staffing practices are poorly understood as is their influence on quality of care. We examined the relationship between staffing characteristics and residents' quality of care indicators at the unit level in LTC homes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected data from administrative records and resident assessments from July 2014 to June 2015 at 11 LTC homes in Ontario, Canada comprising of 55 units and 32 residents in each unit. The sample included 69 registered nurses, 183 licensed/registered practical nurses, 858 nursing assistants, and 2173 residents

Returning to Novice: Why Experienced Nurses Need Transition Support.

Nurses are likely to change roles and settings multiple times in their careers; these changes can involve different specialty areas, organizations, advanced practice, or leadership roles. As nurses' roles change, they experience some of the same challenges that newly licensed nurses face. These challenges can be addressed by implementing a transition-to-practice program.

Exposures to Potentially Psychologically Traumatic Events Among Nurses in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are regularly exposed to diverse potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs) as a function of their work. Cumulative exposure to PPTEs can lead to clinically significant symptoms of mental disorders. PURPOSE: We designed the current study to investigate the prevalence of different PPTEs among Canadian nurses and estimate the associations between diverse exposures and several mental disorders. METHODS: Canadian nurses (i.e., registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioners) completed an online, self-reported survey. I

Motivation in Nursing: A Concept Analysis.

AIM: To clarify and report an analysis of the concept of motivation in nursing. BACKGROUND: Motivation shapes nurses' career decisions, job satisfaction and long-term retention. Persistent workforce challenges, particularly high turnover among newly licensed registered nurses, demand a clear, context-specific understanding of nursing motivation. This concept analysis aimed to clarify motivation within nursing practice, identify its defining attributes, antecedents and consequences, and propose a nursing-specific definition to guide workforce development, recruitment and retention strategies.

Perspectives of primary care nurses on the organization of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Primary care nurses, including nurse practitioners (NPs), registered nurses (RNs), and licensed practical nurses/registered practical nurses (LPNs/RPNs), play a pivotal role in pandemic management and outbreak planning. There is extensive literature surrounding COVID-19 vaccination efforts in Canada; however, limited research addresses the involvement of primary care nurses, as well as the organization and integration of these efforts into primary care settings. This study aimed to describe the organizational challenges, barriers, and facilitators to primary care nurses' roles in C

Associations of sleep problems and recent life events with smoking behaviors among female staff nurses in Japanese hospitals.

For the purpose of examining the relation of sleep problems and other possible correlates with smoking among staff nurses in hospitals, the cross-sectional data of a self-administered questionnaire survey for 522 Japanese female staff nurses were reanalyzed. Registered nurses or licensed practical nurses were 82%, while nursing assistants were 18%. The prevalence of current smoking (PCS) was 29%, being higher than that in the general population of Japanese women. The current smokers exhibited a high tendency toward tobacco dependence. Multivariate analyses revealed that PCS was associated with

Essential Long-Term Care Workers Commonly Hold Second Jobs and Double- or Triple-Duty Caregiving Roles.

OBJECTIVES: Long-term care (LTC) facilities are particularly dangerous places for the spread of COVID-19 given that they house vulnerable high-risk populations. Transmission-based precautions to protect residents, employees, and families alike must account for potential risks posed by LTC workers' second jobs and unpaid care work. This observational study describes the prevalence of their (1) second jobs, and (2) unpaid care work for dependent children and/or adult relatives (double- and triple-duty caregiving) overall and by occupational group (registered nurses [RNs], licensed practical nurs

Nursing and midwifery education, practice, and issues in Israel.

Nurses deliver most of Israel's healthcare services, yet its nurse per population ratio is only 5.9 per 1000, one of the lowest in the developed world. For several years, the managers of the profession have been pushing to upgrade nursing and to move it into the academic sphere. The semiskilled qualification of the practical nurse has been eliminated and training programs for registered nurses are being transformed from diploma training to academic degree programs. A midwifery license is accessible only to registered nurses who take a further 1 year of advanced training and sit the State Midwi

Nurses' knowledge of foot care in the context of home care: a cross-sectional correlational survey study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore nurses' knowledge of foot care and related factors in home care nursing. BACKGROUND: Nurses caring for older people are increasingly confronted with clients who have multiple foot problems and need support with their foot health. The role of nurses in promoting foot health, caring for existing foot problems and supporting older people in foot self-care is especially important in the home care context. However, this entails up-to-date foot care knowledge and practices. DESIGN: A cross-sectional correlational survey study design. METHODS: Nurse

Recommended Health Care Personnel Immunization: Exploring Immunization Rates, Motivators, and Barriers to Immunization in Health Care Personnel.

Immunization rates among health care personnel (HCP) have remained low despite advances in vaccine development with reported rates ranging from 27% to 72% for commonly recommended vaccines. Within the United States, HCP are placing patients, families, and themselves at considerable risk for vaccine-preventable diseases. A significant source of infection, HCP are carriers of infectious agents and often unknowingly transmit these contagious diseases while experiencing minimal or no symptoms. This study examined the current immunization rates of HCP for influenza, tetanus, diphtheria, and pertuss

From COVID-19 to Hurricane Helene: Rethinking the Role of Nursing Students in Crisis Response.

Western Carolina University (WCU) nursing students, alongside faculty and licensed nurse volunteers, played pivotal roles in the community's response to Hurricane Helene's devastating impact. Drawing on WCU's experience, this article examines the successes and challenges of integrating nursing students into emergency response efforts and emphasizes the need for strengthened pre-planning and academic-practice partnerships, the implementation of readiness checklists, and the development of a centralized registry to clarify student roles and identify preceptors during emergencies.

The relative geographic immobility of new registered nurses calls for new strategies to augment that workforce.

Little is known about registered nurses' geographic mobility after they earn their first professional degree and become licensed to practice. Through a cross-sectional mailed survey of newly licensed registered nurses in fifteen states, we found that 52.5 percent work within forty miles of where they attended high school. Our complementary analysis of Census Bureau data shows that next to teaching, nursing is one of the least mobile professions for women, for reasons that remain unclear. To ensure that underserved areas have an adequate workforce of registered nurses, policy makers should expa

An "Engage to Sustain" Intervention to Improve Process Performance Measures in Ambulatory Care.

In ambulatory care, monitoring process performance measures (PPMs) is essential to meet regulatory requirements, establish targets for care, seek reimbursement, and evaluate patient care responsibilities. We implemented a comprehensive program, "Engage to Sustain," for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and certified medical assistants (CMAs) to practice at the top of their licensure/certification. Screening rates for 4 key PPMs (depression screening, fall risk screening, and tobacco use screening and counseling) markedly increased following this intervention across 18 ambulatory departments wit

How Can Organizational Leaders Help? Examining the Effectiveness of Leaders' Support During a Crisis.

Organizational leaders can make a large, positive impact on their employees during crises. However, existing research demonstrates that social support is not always effective in helping employees cope with stress, and existing research has not fully identified features of support attempts that determine their effectiveness. Using mixed methods, the authors investigate the efficacy of organizational leaders' support efforts during a crisis. In the first study, 571 employees (196 university administrative staff, 192 licensed nurses, and 183 licensed engineers) described actions their leaders eng

Nursing Home Staff  With Children: Unique Needs Among Single and Partnered Parents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Nursing home (NH) staff job dissatisfaction and turnover are associated with lower care quality. However, little is known about the impact of being single on workplace experiences. Guided by the Job Demands-Control-Support Model, we compared job satisfaction, turnover intention, and psychological distress for single and partnered parents working in NHs. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Employee and manager data from the 2011 to 2012 wave of the Work Family Health Network study were combined (N = 1,144) to define parents with complete data (N = 586). Bivariate tests and

Providers' assessment of barriers to effective management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia in community health centers.

We explored 251 providers' (47% licensed practical nurses, 27% registered nurses, 10% physicians, 10% physician assistants, 6% other) perceptions of barriers to effective management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia from 72 Midwest community health centers (CHCs). Optimal care for these diseases is difficult in any setting; little is known about the specific barriers CHCs face. Community health centers often have a multidisciplinary team that participates in patient care. Current models of quality improvement and chronic care management require virtually all CHC providers to know clinical gui
