Students' versus residency programs' perceptions of a high-quality PGY1 residency applicant.

INTRODUCTION: Securing a pharmacy residency position is highly competitive, and pharmacy students must work throughout pharmacy school to ensure their applications are as competitive as possible. Several surveys asking residency programs to describe the most crucial qualities of a high-quality residency candidate have been conducted. However, no study has investigated whether congruency exists between pharmacy students' and residency programs' perceptions of these sought-after qualities. METHODS: We surveyed pharmacy students to compare their perceptions of important qualities of residency ca

Pharmacy education in India at an inflection point: Current trends, future scope, and caveats - a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacy education in India is undergoing simultaneous curricular, pedagogical, and regulatory change, and a revised draft National Pharmacy Commission (NPC) Bill was released for public consultation in July 2026. Existing accounts treat these developments separately or assume that internationally derived evidence transfers to Indian conditions. This review integrates them and appraises that assumption. METHODS: Narrative review. PubMed and OpenAlex were searched on July 2026 for publications from 2005 to 2026 using thematic and India-specific strands (1902 and 41 PubMed records;

Eligibility, Participation, and Matching Outcomes of International Pharmacy Graduates in Accredited Pharmacy Residency Programs in Canada: A Policy Scan and Cross-Sectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND: International pharmacy graduates (IPGs) are underrepresented in Canadian hospitals. It has been speculated that structural factors, particularly limited access to residency programs, may contribute to IPGs' disproportionate streaming toward community pharmacy practice. OBJECTIVES: To review the criteria of accredited hospital pharmacy residency programs in Canada to determine whether IPGs are eligible to apply, to examine the extent of IPGs' participation and success in securing hospital pharmacy residency positions, and to determine the factors that influence success in the match

Preprofessional curriculum in preparation for doctor of pharmacy educational programs.

The preprofessional pharmacy curriculum provides the foundation for the professional curriculum. Basic requirements are noted in the ACPE Standards and Guidelines, but there is considerable variation in the preprofessional curriculum requirements for entry into doctor of pharmacy programs in the United States. Changes in higher education, pharmacy practice, and health care continue to drive the need to evaluate the preprofessional curriculum. The objectives of this white paper were to create model preprofessional curricula that would enable students to be successful during and after entry into

A model to predict NAPLEX outcomes and identify students needing additional preparation.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have been conducted to identify factors that may predict North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) outcomes, but there is no proposed single or combination of predictors that can be implemented reliably in academia. We aimed to develop a NAPLEX outcomes predictive model that could be practical, measurable, and reliable. METHODS: The study cohort consisted of students who graduated from 2012 to 2016 who had taken NAPLEX and whose first-attempt examination scores were available to the school of pharmacy. Students were considered to have poor performance on N

Structural awareness and knowledge of social determinants among pharmacists by practice settings and training eras.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacists' ability to recognize structural factors - including socioeconomic conditions and systemic barriers - that influence patient health outcomes is critical for addressing health disparities. To build this capacity, social determinants of health (SDOH) and population health have become integral aspects of the pharmacy curriculum. However, whether their inclusion enhances structural awareness remains unknown. The study objectives were to determine whether structural awareness differs between pharmacists in hospital, ambulatory, and community settings; and between those train

Compliance With Cannabis Act Regulations Regarding Online Promotion Among Canadian Commercial Cannabis-Licensed Firms.

IMPORTANCE: As global jurisdictions shift toward cannabis legalization, 2 areas of public health importance relate to exposure to youth and to truthful promotion. Although Canada's Cannabis Act specifies many prohibitions related to cannabis promotion, no systematic monitoring or enforcement among licensed firms exists. Compliance with marketing regulations has effects beyond Canadian citizens because of the global outreach of websites and social media. When the morning after is Sunday: pharmacist prescribing of emergency contraceptive pills.

Pharmacists are well positioned to play a major role in increasing access to emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs). A pilot project in Washington State is testing direct pharmacist prescribing. Through a collaborative drug therapy agreement, a licensed prescriber, such as a physician, delegates to a pharmacist the authority to prescribe ECPs directly to women who meet the assessment criteria. Currently pharmacists at 111 Washington State pharmacies have collaborative agreements in place, and the number of participating pharmacies continues to increase. The response to this initiative has been e

'1996' starting the modern era of biologics regulation: FDA's elimination of establishment licensure and other changes.

On May 14, 1996, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a new regulation eliminating the establishment licensure requirement for certain 'specified' biologics and expanded the definition of 'manufacturer' for biologic products in general. These regulatory changes are a significant change in the history of biologics regulation and are the logical culmination to the FDA's recent efforts to make modern biologics regulation conform to modern biologics technology. This regulation essentially placed modern biologics on an equal regulatory and commercial footing with traditional chemical

Pharmacy technician-to-pharmacist ratios: a state-driven safety and quality decision.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the policy of pharmacy technician-to-pharmacist ratios by comparing Florida as an example of legislative-led authority versus Tennessee as an example of board of pharmacy-led ruling. SUMMARY: Over the past 2 years, the Florida legislature has debated the issue of pharmacy staffing ratios, initially leaving the Florida Board of Pharmacy with little authority to advocate for and enact safe technician staffing ratios. Anticipating this situation, the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy created rules to meet pharmacy staffing needs while protecting the authority of the pharmacist-in

Association Between Time From Eligibility to Examination and Exam Outcomes Among Residency-Trained Board of Pharmacy Specialties Candidates: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) board certification represents a recognized standard for advanced pharmacy practice and provides formal validation of specialized knowledge and skills through rigorously developed examinations. In other health professions, taking certification or licensure examinations soon after completing training has been associated with higher pass rates, while delays have been linked to poorer outcomes. This study investigates whether a similar pattern exists among BPS candidates, particularly those who complete residency training and become eligible for cer

Evaluation of an interprofessional active learning session on acute pain and opioid use disorder using the interprofessional collaborative competency attainment scale.

Pain is complex and best managed using an interprofessional approach. A complicating factor is the high prevalence of co-existing opioid use disorder (OUD). Interprofessional education (IPE) may be an important strategy for transforming pain and OUD care. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an interactive, case-based IPE session related to acute pain management in persons with OUD on pre-licensure health science students' perceived achievement of core competencies for interprofessional collaborative practice. Students completed a self-assessment of competency before and a

Evaluating pharmacists' knowledge, attitude, and practices toward amiodarone cross-reactivity with iodine: a cross-sectional pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Iodine is a vital mineral of the human body that acts by maintaining the health of the thyroid gland. Research has shown that iodine-rich food allergy (i.e., seafood allergy) is not caused by iodine itself; instead, it is caused by other proteins including tropomyosin and parvalbumin in shellfish and fish, respectively. Amiodarone is a commonly used antiarrhythmic agent containing a significant amount of iodine. OBJECTIVE: This study's objective was to assess pharmacists' knowledge, attitude, and practices toward the misconception of iodine allergy and the cross-reactivity with

Understanding State Regulation of Biosimilars and Effect on Prescribers.

Biologics are a mainstay of treatment for many dermatologic conditions, however the high costs can be prohibitive for many patients. A growing market of biosimilar drugs is emerging with the hope of providing patients access to more affordable medications. While the FDA has created an abbreviated licensure pathway for these drugs, states are still in the process of creating regulations regarding their substitution for reference biologics. This article looks to raise awareness of the current federal regulations and the differences among state regulations regarding the use of biosimilars. Fifty

Interprofessional geriatric education in a post-pandemic world: Comparing outcomes of in-person versus virtual simulations.

Interprofessional education (IPE) enhanced with simulation for pre-licensure health care students can be used to teach a collaborative interprofessional team approach to promote positive health outcomes in the older adult population. Little is known about outcome differences between in-person and virtual IPE. A multi-step, simulation-enhanced IPE was developed based on Wagner's Chronic Care and Constructivism Active Learning theoretical frameworks and implemented in-person and virtually for cohort comparison. Learning outcomes were the advancement of interprofessional collaborative competencie

Injectable contraceptive sales at licensed chemical seller shops in ghana: access and reported use in rural and periurban communities.

CONTEXT: Most women in Ghana obtain oral contraceptives and condoms from shops run by licensed chemical sellers, but such shops are not legally permitted to sell the country's most widely used method, the injectable. Allowing shops to sell the injectable could increase access to and use of the method. METHODS: In 2012-2013, semistructured telephone interviews were conducted among convenience samples of 94 licensed chemical seller shop operators in two districts who were trained to sell the injectable and of 298 women who purchased the method from these shops. Follow-up interviews were conduct
