Exploring Maternal and Child Health Among Tribal Communities in India: A Life Course Perspective.

India experiences high rates of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, with tribal communities disproportionately affected. Tribal populations frequently live in unfavorable socio-economic conditions and deficient social health indicators, culminating in adverse health consequences. Using a life course perspective, this qualitative study explored risks over the life course that contribute to maternal and child health problems among tribal populations in India. Additionally, the study examined barriers to utilization of healthcare services during the pregnancy and postpartum periods. Data

Trauma, Discrimination, and Psychological Distress Across Vietnamese Refugees and Immigrants: A Life Course Perspective.

Vietnamese Americans are a heterogeneous group with varied migration histories. The life course perspective (LCP) suggests that different migration histories (immigrant vs. refugee) may affect their psychological health. Using Vietnamese refugee (n = 291) and immigrant (n = 211) subsamples from the National Latino and Asian American Study, selected LCP factors relevant to foreign-born Vietnamese were examined for their associations with psychological distress. Two separate regressions were conducted to examine differential factors across the subgroups. Results showed that sex, age at immigrati

Taking a life course perspective on cardiovascular disease and diabetes in First Nations peoples.

The burden of cardiovascular disease and diabetes and associated risk factors, such as obesity, smoking, impaired glucose tolerance, hypertension, and dietary factors, present a mix of factors that are detrimental to the immediate and long-term health of First Nations peoples in Canada. The authors use a life course perspective to examine the long-term effects of risk factors that are prevalent during gestation, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, and adult life on developmental health and later disease risk. The resultant broader perspective may generate innovative approaches to addressi

Sexual exploitation of young men: Background characteristics and needs from a life-course perspective.

BACKGROUND: Sexually exploited young men are prevalent, yet underrepresented in clinical practice, policy and research. There are multiple barriers that often prevent young men to disclose and to seek or receive support, such as gender norms, limited awareness of victimization and feelings of guilt and shame. OBJECTIVE: By gaining more insight into the background characteristics of young men who experienced sexual exploitation and their needs, this study aims to raise awareness and to better inform policymakers, care- and educational professionals on adequate prevention and intervention effor

Linking parental incarceration and family dynamics associated with intergenerational transmission: A life-course perspective.

Children experiencing parental incarceration face numerous additional disadvantages, but researchers have often relied on these other co-occurring factors primarily as controls. In this article, we focus on the intimate links between crime and incarceration, as well as on the broader family context within which parental incarceration often unfolds. Thus, parents' drug use and criminal behavior that precedes and may follow incarceration periods may be ongoing stressors that directly affect child well-being. We also use our analyses to foreground mechanisms associated with social learning theori

From Womb to Tomb: A Life-Course Perspective on the Origins of Non-communicable Diseases.

Chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders are leading causes of death globally. Although often considered adult-onset, growing evidence links their origins to early developmental exposures, including prenatal, neonatal, and early childhood stages. This review adopts a life-course perspective to examine how factors such as maternal undernutrition, gestational diabetes, low birth weight, early antibiotic use, suboptimal infant feeding, adverse childhood experiences, and childhood obesity influence long-term disease risk through mechanisms like epigene

Age-Related Change in Mobility: Perspectives From Life Course Epidemiology and Geroscience.

Mobility is the most studied and most relevant physical ability affecting quality of life with strong prognostic value for disability and survival. Natural selection has built the "Движок" of mobility with great robustness, redundancy, and functional reserve. Efficient patterns of mobility can be acquired during development even by children affected by severe impairments. Analogously, age-associated impairments in mobility-related physiological systems are compensated and overt limitations of mobility only occur when the severity can no longer be compensated. Mobility loss in older persons usu

Financial Strain Across 25 years and Men's Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms: A Life Course Perspective.

This research utilizes Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) cohort study data to examine whether financial strain is associated with subsequent lower urinary tract symptoms among men and whether healthcare barriers, health risk behaviors, and comorbid conditions explain this association. CARDIA recruited Black and White participants aged 18 to 30 years at baseline (1985-1986) from four United States cities. The analytic sample was comprised of men with complete data for analyses involving financial strain trajectories across 7 assessments (n = 602) and mediation tests of d

Tooth loss from the perspective of studies employing a life course approach: a systematic review.

The life course approach scrutinizes factors that shape the development of diseases over time. Tooth loss, which is influenced by social, behavioral and biological factors, can occur at various stages of life and tends to become more prevalent in later years. This systematic review examined the influence of socioeconomic, psychosocial, biological and behavioral adversities in life on the likelihood of tooth loss. Searches were conducted in the Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid, PsycINFO, Scopus and LILACS databases. Reference management was performed using EndNote online. The risk of bias w

Generational disparities in maternal healthcare: a life-course perspective on social determinants in Kersa, Eastern Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal mortality remains persistently high in low- and middle-income countries, driven by inequities in access to and use of maternal healthcare. A life-course perspective offers critical insights into the underlying drivers of these disparities, linking historical, social and structural factors across women's lives to health outcomes. By contextualising maternal health within lifelong trajectories, the analysis aims to inform targeted strategies to reduce inequities and improve care access across generations. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the generational differences in the maternal

Factors that impact mental health help-seeking in Australian adolescents: a life-course and socioecological perspective.

BACKGROUND: Help-seeking provides opportunities for early prevention and intervention of mental health problems. However, little is known about factors that impact help-seeking from a life-course and socioecological perspective. This study aimed to examine factors that impact adolescents' formal and informal help-seeking in three population groups: the whole population, adolescents with depressive symptoms and adolescents with anxiety symptoms. METHODS: We drew on data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children birth cohort. Participants were followed from birth to 14-15 years. Based

Sexual Positioning Practices and Sexual Risk Among Black Gay and Bisexual Men: A Life Course Perspective.

Increased attention has highlighted the role of age and sexual development on HIV risk among Black MSM (BMSM); limited focus has been given to the relationship of sexual positioning to HIV risk along the life course. This study examined BMSM's life course sexual positioning practices and accompanying HIV/STI risks. Twenty-six Black gay and bisexual men ages 24-61 completed life history interviews in Los Angeles, California, between September and November 2015. Thematic analysis evaluated domains including major life events, substance use, social support, and partner selection. Varying exposure

Impact of growth markers and patterns of growth on children's cardiometabolic health: a life course perspective.

BACKGROUND: Growth and development in children are known to be closely associated with cardiometabolic health. However, there is a lack of systematic assessments of associations between growth markers and growth patterns across different developmental stages and pediatric cardiometabolic health in prospective birth cohorts. This study aimed to identify critical developmental windows and growth characteristics that may be relevant to cardiometabolic health that could inform future prevention strategies. METHODS: We utilized the Ma'anshan birth cohort and obtained repeated measurements of body

Social connection and disconnection: older adults' life course perspectives on information and communication technologies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research has established that while most older adults use information and communication technologies (ICTs), loneliness and social isolation in later life are pressing issues. Studies of older adults' ICT use have largely been cross-sectional, focused on their attitudes and preferences, and conducted with White, well-educated individuals who were disproportionately aged 65 to 75. Using an intersectional life course perspective, the purpose of our study was to understand the meanings that diverse older adults attributed to ICTs. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We purpos

Chronic schizophrenia versus Alzheimer's disease: neuroimaging perspectives on the late-life course of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a chronic mental disorder that typically starts in early adulthood. It is characterised by structural brain abnormalities that occur early in the course of the disease, such as changes in the synapses and alterations in the brain white matter, which consequently progress to brain atrophy in several regions of the brain, as well as white matter lesions. On the other hand, epidemiological evidence indicates improved survival and increased life expectancy among patients with SCZ, largely due to advances in diagnosis and medication management, resulting in a growing number o
