Effects of temperature on the life history traits of intermediate host snails of fascioliasis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The impact of climate change has led to variations in various biological processes, leading to altered transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, including snail-borne diseases (SBDs). Fascioliasis is one of the neglected zoonotic tropical snail-borne diseases caused by the trematode of the genus Fasciola. This review focused on laboratory experimental and model studies that evaluate the potential effect of temperature change on the ecology and biology of the intermediate host snails (IHS) of Fasciola. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on Google Scholar, EBSCOhost, and

Parasites suffer too: Effects of host's pollutant exposure on some life-history traits of acanthocephalan parasites.

Parasites are integral components of biodiversity, shaping host populations, food web dynamics, and ecosystem stability. However, they are influenced by environmental conditions and face growing threats. Despite growing evidence of global declines in parasite populations, the impacts of contaminants on their fitness in freshwater ecosystems remains poorly understood. In this study we investigated how environmental variability, host traits, and pollutant exposure affect the fitness and infection patterns of acanthocephalan parasites in chub (Squalius cephalus). Using a mesocosm approach, we ass

Hemoparasites Do Not Affect Life-History Traits and Cellular Immune Response in Treefrog Hosts Boana cordobae.

We provide the first evidence for hemoparasites in the endemic Cordoba treefrog Boana cordobae. We collected 37 adult frogs at 1200 m a.s.l. in the Comechingones Mountains in the Córdoba province (Argentina). Each individual was sexed, then snout-vent length and body mass were recorded, a toe was collected for skeletochronological age determination, and a slide with a blood smear was prepared for hemoparasite screening, before releasing the frogs in situ. A total of 81% (n = 30) of the frogs were infected by hemogregarines and trypanosomes with a high intensity of infections. Dactylosoma was f

Removal of gut symbiotic bacteria negatively affects life history traits of the shield bug, Graphosoma lineatum.

The shield bug, Graphosoma lineatum (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae), harbors extracellular Pantoea-like symbiont in the enclosed crypts of the midgut. The symbiotic bacteria are essential for normal longevity and fecundity of this insect. In this study, life table analysis was used to assess the biological importance of the gut symbiont in G. lineatum. Considering vertical transmission of the bacterial symbiont through the egg surface contamination, we used surface sterilization of the eggs to remove the symbiont. The symbiont population was decreased in the newborn nymphs hatched from the surface

Life history traits of Sirex noctilio F. (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) can explain outbreaks independently of environmental factors.

The woodwasp Sirex noctilio is a major pest of pine plantations worldwide. Economically significant damage is however limited to outbreak populations. To understand what determines outbreaks dynamics in this species, we developed an individual based model for a wasp population developing within a pine plantation. We show that outbreaks may be the result of the insect's life history. Specifically we show that limited dispersal may not only increase population persistence but also create the conditions for eruptive dynamics. When the probability of long distance dispersal is greater than zero, b

Life-history traits of standard and autochthonous cladocerans: I. Acute and chronic effects of acetylsalicylic acid.

Pharmaceuticals have been recognized as an important group of aquatic micropollutants, mainly because of their biologically active nature. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), which is the active compound of Aspirin and many other pharmaceuticals, is consumed in large quantities every year. Therefore, its acute and chronic effects on standard (Daphnia magna) and autochthonous (Daphnia longispina) daphnids were investigated. The results showed that ASA impaired the survivorship, reproduction, and growth of the cladoceran species. The standard daphnid was the more tolerant species in acute assays (48-h E

Gut-microbiota reshaping by environmental oxytetracycline residues threatens life-history traits in a polyphagous fruit fly.

The persistence and overuse of oxytetracycline (OTC) have been associated with environmental contamination, ecological toxicity, and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Beyond its direct antimicrobial activity, environmental residues of OTC may disrupt non-target organisms by affecting life-history traits. In this study, the oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) was chronically exposed to OTC to assess gut microbiota shifts and associated life-history responses. Our results demonstrated that environmental OTC residues prolonged larval development, reduced pupal weight, and suppressed

Medfly-Wolbachia symbiosis: genotype x genotype interactions determine host's life history traits under mass rearing conditions.

BACKGROUND: Wolbachia pipientis is a widespread, obligatory intracellular and maternally inherited bacterium, that induces a wide range of reproductive alterations to its hosts. Cytoplasmic Incompatibility (CI) is causing embryonic lethality, the most common of them. Despite that Wolbachia-borne sterility has been proposed as an environmental friendly pest control method (Incompatible Insect Technique, IIT) since 1970s, the fact that Wolbachia modifies important fitness components of its hosts sets severe barriers to IIT implementation. Mass rearing of Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capita

Post-Fission Regeneration and Life-History Traits in the Fissiparous Brittle Star Ophiactis savignyi (Ophiuroidea: Amphilepidida: Ophiactidae).

Fissiparity, a form of asexual reproduction, involves the loss of significant body parts followed by regeneration. In echinoderms, this mode of reproduction has been documented in numerous species, particularly among holothurians, asteroids, and ophiuroids. Fissiparous brittle stars typically exhibit six-fold symmetry and restore this body plan by regenerating the missing half of the disk and three arms after fission. However, the detailed regeneration process and its dynamics in natural populations remain poorly understood. Here, we characterized post-fission regeneration in the brittle star

Multi-generational koala pedigree analysis reveals rapid changes in heritable provirus load associated with life history traits.

Retroviruses that colonize the host germline can be passed on as inherited genetic variants. The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is currently experiencing germline colonization by two retroviruses, the koala retrovirus (KoRV) and phaCin-β. We analyze the integration site segregation and diversity of endogenous KoRV, phaCin-β, and the related phaCin-β-like in 111 pedigreed koalas from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and seven European Zoos. The use of multigenerational pedigrees and the inclusion of health information for each individual koala reveal elimination of retroviruses from proto-on

Long-term exposure to sediment-associated antidepressants impacts life-history traits in an estuarine deposit-feeding worm.

Hydrophobic pollutants, such as the antidepressant sertraline (SER), tend to sorb to particles in the water column and subsequently accumulate in the sediment. Long-term exposure to these pollutants may significantly affect sediment-dwelling organisms´ fitness and behavior. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the impact of chronic exposure to a range of environmentally relevant and higher concentrations of sediment-associated SER on the deposit-feeding polychaete Capitella teleta. Since certain antidepressants can function as neurotoxic chemicals and endocrine disruptors on non-targ

Sand flies and Toscana virus: Intra-vector infection dynamics and impact on Phlebotomus perniciosus life-history traits.

Toscana virus (TOSV) is a leading cause of summer viral meningitis in Southern Europe (Central Italy, south of France, Spain and Portugal) and can cause severe neurological cases. Within the Mediterranean basin, it is transmitted by hematophagous sand flies belonging to the Phlebotomus genus. Despite the identification of the primary TOSV vectors, the viral developmental cycle in vector species remains largely unknown. Limited research has been conducted on transmission dynamics and the vector competence and vectorial capacity of the principal TOSV vector, Phlebotomus perniciosus. In this cont

Larval rearing temperature influences the effect of malathion on Aedes aegypti life history traits and immune responses.

The effects of anthropogenic chemical contaminants on aquatic organisms are largely influenced by underlying environmental conditions. This study evaluated how larval rearing temperature influences the impact of malathion on the fitness of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti. Larvae were exposed to water control, and low (0.03mg/L) or high (0.05mg/L) malathion dose at 20°C, 25°C and 30°C and emergence rate, time to emergence, female fecundity and expression of genes encoding two antimicrobial peptides (defensin, cecropin) and an iron-binding protein (transferrin) quantified. Species' life-history traits explain interspecific variation in reservoir competence: a possible mechanism underlying the dilution effect.

Hosts species for multi-host pathogens show considerable variation in the species' reservoir competence, which is usually used to measure species' potential to maintain and transmit these pathogens. Although accumulating research has proposed a trade-off between life-history strategies and immune defences, only a few studies extended this to host species' reservoir competence. Using a phylogenetic comparative approach, we studied the relationships between some species' life-history traits and reservoir competence in three emerging infectious vector-borne disease systems, namely Lyme disease, W

Effect of water temperature on life history traits of Radix natalensis, the intermediate host of Fasciola gigantica.

BACKGROUND: Radix natalensis, a gastropod, serves as an intermediate host of Fasciola gigantica in tropical and subtropical regions, causing fascioliasis, a disease of public health and veterinary importance worldwide. Predicting disease burden requires understanding how climate change influences its life-history traits. This study investigated the effects of temperature on the life-history traits of R. natalensis. Snails were exposed to six temperature treatments (15.5 ℃, 19.5 ℃, 20.3 ℃ (control), 24.6 ℃, 29.8 ℃, and 35.1 ℃). For each treatment, 10 jars served as replicates, each containing t

Effect of extended egg quiescence and elevation in carbon dioxide on life history traits of Aedes aegypti.

Elevation in carbon dioxide is a global threat, driving anthropogenic climate change. How disease-vectoring mosquitoes respond to these changes is currently largely unknown. The dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, has adapted to urban environments, which are more affected by climatic changes, especially CO2. Aedes aegypti lay eggs around ephemeral water bodies that are prone to desiccation, with the pharate larvae possessing the ability to resist the desiccation, during which the permeability across the chorion is compromised. The study investigates the combined effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 a

Effects of co-habitation between Anopheles gambiae s.s. and Culex quinquefasciatus aquatic stages on life history traits.

BACKGROUND: The effective measures for the control of malaria and filariasis vectors can be achieved by targeting immature stages of anopheline and culicine mosquitoes in productive habitat. To design this strategy, the mechanisms (like biotic interactions with conspecifc and heterospecific larvae) regulating mosquito aquatic stages survivorship, development time and the size of emerging adults should be understood. This study explored the effect of co-habitation between An. gambiae s.s. and Cx. quinquefasciatus on different life history traits of both species under different densities and con

Life-history traits of standard and autochthonous cladocerans: II. Acute and chronic effects of acetylsalicylic acid metabolites.

Metabolic products are often more toxic than their pharmacological parent compounds. Therefore, the acute and chronic effects of the main metabolites--salicylic acid (SAL), gentisic acid (GEN), and o-hydroxyhippuric acid (HDP)--of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), the active ingredient in Aspirin and many other pharmaceuticals, were assessed using standard (Daphnia magna) and autochthonous (Daphnia longispina) cladocerans. Ontogenetic and life history trait changes associated with convergent ecological specializations in extinct ungulate mammals.

Investigating life history traits in mammals is crucial to understand their survival in changing environments. However, these parameters are hard to estimate in a macroevolutionary context. Here we show that the use of dental ontogenetic parameters can provide clues to better understand the adaptive nature of phenotypic traits in extinct species such as South American notoungulates. This recently extinct order of mammals evolved in a context of important geological, climatic, and environmental variations. Interestingly, notoungulates were mostly herbivorous and acquired high-crowned teeth very
