Intra-articular peroneal nerve incarceration following multi-ligament knee injury.

Knee dislocation with a common peroneal nerve injury is a serious problem. A case of multi-ligamentous knee injury with the unusual and interesting finding of a common peroneal nerve rupture incarcerated within the knee joint is presented. MRI and arthroscopic images are used to document this occurrence. To date, there are no published reports of a similar finding in the English orthopaedic literature. Level of evidence IV.

Rehabilitation after extra-articular stabilisation of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs.

Patients at the Blue Star Foundation animal hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, underwent a procedure with an extracapsular suture technique for cranial cruciate ligament rupture. Two groups were compared; one of the groups received rehabilitation by the owner, and the other received professional rehabilitation by a trained physiotherapists. The dogs where reexamined at four, 12 and 24 weeks postoperatively. The results were 'good' in both groups but a difference was not seen between the groups. This study shows that in the dogs with a body weight of between 25 and 50 kg with cranial cruciate liga

The osteochondral ligament: a fibrous attachment between bone and articular cartilage in Rana catesbeiana.

The anuran epiphyseal cartilage shows a lateral expansion that covers the external surface of the bone, besides other features that distinguish it from the corresponding avian and mammalian structures. The fibrous structure that attaches the lateral cartilage to the bone was characterized in this work. It was designated osteochondral ligament (OCL) and presented two main areas. There was an inner area that was closer to the periosteal bone and contained a layer of osteoblasts and elongated cells aligned to and interspersed with thin collagen fibers. The thin processes of the cells in this area

A fluid-structure interaction investigation of intra-articular pressure and ligament in wrist joint.

Understanding the stresses on the scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL) and its interaction with synovial fluid pressure could be vital to improve wrist treatment for various wrist conditions such as arthritis, sprains and tendonitis. This study investigated the interaction between the intra-articular pressure, specifically the synovial fluid pressure change and the SLIL stresses in a computational model during wrist radioulnar deviation (RUD). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were used to acquire the anatomical model of the carpal bones and ligament, while the kinematics of scaphoid

The effect of intra-articular injection of microRNA-210 on ligament healing in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: It is known from clinical and experimental studies that the healing potential of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is extremely poor and that early phases of ligament healing require an augmented blood supply. MicroRNA (miRNA) is a type of small, noncoding RNA that negatively regulates gene expression, and miRNA (miR)-210 is reported to be crucial for cell response to hypoxia, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-driven endothelial cell migration, and formation of capillary-like structures. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of intra-articular inj

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and concomitant articular cartilage injury: incidence and treatment.

PURPOSE: Articular cartilage injuries commonly occur in conjunction with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The exact incidence of this combined injury pattern, as well as the optimal treatment for it, has not been well studied in the literature. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature regarding the incidence of concomitant articular cartilage and ACL injury and the results of combined surgical treatment of these injuries. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of studies investigating the incidence of articular cartilage injury in conjunction with ACL i

The fate of intra-articular debris following arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

The debris generated during arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction may be seen on postoperative radiographs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence, effects, and natural history of intra-articular debris following ACL reconstruction. This retrospective review included 99 ACL reconstructed knees in 96 patients. Radiographically visible debris was present in 63% of knees (bone in 59% and metal in 4%), and 37% of knees had no visible debris. Bone was most commonly seen in the posterior compartment (95%), and metal within the intercondylar notch. There were n

Editorial Commentary: Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis Reduces Anterior Cruciate Ligament Graft Rerupture Rates: Proper Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis Technique Is Vital to Prevent Complications.

Lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) reduces anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) graft rerupture rates in high-risk patients. I believe in ilio-tibial band (ITB)-related LET to restrain anterolateral rotatory instability (ALRI) in ACL that is injured and reconstructed, and not in the "anterolateral ligament" or related techniques. However, the potential for conflict of a modified Lemaire LET femoral tunnel with an ACL femoral tunnel is higher than appreciated, and it risks iatrogenic ACL graft damage or compromised fixation. For MacIntosh LET, I use a staple to fix a strip of ITB (left attache

Trans-articular Kirschner wire fixation in treating complex tibial plateau fractures complicated by multiple ligaments injuries: A case report and literature review.

There is no guideline and consensus about when and how to treat accompanying multi-ligaments injuries, especially anterior and/or posterior cruciate ligaments, in tibial plateau fractures. We report one case of fracture and dislocation of tibial plateau, treated by open reduction and internal plates fixation, augmented by trans-articular Kirschner wire fixation to overcome instability and malrotation of the knee joints discovered intraoperatively. The Kirschner wire was removed about four weeks after the index operation, and the patient begun functional exercise from then on. The fracture unit

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Using Lateral Extra-Articular Procedures: A Systematic Review.

Background and Objectives: The present systematic review investigated the efficacy of lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) and anterolateral ligament (ALL) as lateral extra-articular procedures (LEAPs) for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. ACL reconstruction using LEAP may reduce graft rupture and rotatory laxity and allow a quicker return to sports. The outcomes of interest were patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), return to sport, laxity, failure rate, and safety profile. Materials and Methods: The present systematic review followed the 2020 PRISMA guidelines. In Dece

Assessing Risk to Articular Cartilage and the Calcaneofibular Ligament During Fibular Nailing: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Traditional surgical fixation of ankle fractures with plates and screws carries risks such as wound complications, hardware prominence, and soft tissue irritation. Intramedullary (IM) fibular nailing provides a minimally invasive alternative with potentially lower complication rates. Although prior studies have examined the risk posed by fibular nailing to the peroneal tendons and nerves, data remained limited regarding its impact on other adjacent structures especially the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) and the articular cartilage of the distal fibula, structures whose injury coul

Expression of extracellular matrix molecules typical of articular cartilage in the human scapholunate interosseous ligament.

The scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL) connects the scaphoid and lunate bones and plays a crucial role in carpal kinematics. Its rupture leads to carpal instability and impairment of radiocarpal joint function. As the ligament is one of the first structures affected in rheumatoid arthritis, we conducted an immunohistochemical study of cadaveric tissue to determine whether it contains known autoantigens for rheumatoid arthritis. We immunolabelled the ligament from one hand in 12 cadavers with monoclonal antibodies directed against a wide range of extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules asso

Role of lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) in anterior cruciate ligament-injured athletes.

Lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) has re-emerged as a significant adjunct to anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), particularly in high-level athletes who are at a heightened risk for re-injury and graft failure. This review synthesizes recent literature examining the biomechanical and clinical outcomes associated with LET in the context of ACLR in high-level athletes. Biomechanical studies indicate that LET can enhance knee stability by providing additional restraint against anterior tibial translation and rotatory instability, thereby reducing rotational laxity and offloadi
