Trigeminal Neuralgia Following Lightning Injury.

Lightning and other electrical incidents are responsible for more than 300 injuries and 100 deaths per year in the United States alone. Lightning strikes can cause a wide spectrum of neurologic manifestations affecting any part of the neuraxis through direct strikes, side flashes, touch voltage, connecting leaders, or acoustic shock waves. This article describes the first case of trigeminal neuralgia induced by lightning injury to the trigeminal nerve, thereby adding a new syndrome to the list of possible lightning-mediated neurologic injuries.

Lightning injury in an outdoor swine herd.

Three pigs, weighing 63 kg-70 kg each, from a group of 8 pigs in an outdoor pen that was struck by lightning were necropsied. All 3 pigs presented with hind limb paralysis. The only lesions identified were multiple fractures of the last (seventh) lumbar vertebral body and first sacral vertebral segment, with dorsal displacement of the sacrum and transection of the distal spinal cord and spinal nerves. Hemorrhages extended from the fracture sites into muscles immediately surrounding the lumbosacral junction and retroperitoneally into the pelvic cavity. These hemorrhages were not clearly visible

[Myocardial damage following lightning injury].

In a 27-year-old woman, struck by lightning behind the left ear, the ECG showed signs of an acute posterior-lateral myocardial infarction after 1 h of unconsciousness and loss of memory. Her serum enzymes were increased as is typical of myocardial infarction, but the patient did not complain of cardiac symptoms. Besides clear signs of lightning injury, the patient showed a hemorrhage throughout the left breast and transient pericardial effusion was observed by echocardiography. In the course of two months, the ECG revealed a regression to unspecific ST-T-deviations and serum enzymes became nor

An injury subjacent to lac ornament in a case of lightning.

This is a report of a case in which, for the first time, direct lightning strike had caused burn injuries associated with internal soft-tissue bruising and visceral injury subjacent to lac jewellery on the chest. The burn injury depicted a symmetrical pattern, which was almost 5 times larger than the size of the jewellery. Surprisingly, there was bruising of soft tissue beneath the burn, associated with extravasation of blood in anterior mediastinum, contusion of anterior border of lungs, contusion to heart and rent by burn to the blouse of the victim over the front and back, all in one line,

Six cases of collective lightning-induced arc explosion injuries: A case report.

Currently, clinical studies on lightning injuries are mostly limited to single-patient cases, and there is still limited understanding of the mechanisms and clinical features of injuries that occur simultaneously among multiple individuals in a localized area. This article reports the environmental conditions, injuries, and treatment of six patients who suffered from arc explosion injuries caused by lightning within a 200-m radius. The incident occurred in late June on a rainy day at a coastal location (approximately 680 m elevation). Six patients were simultaneously injured by a lightning-ind

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to report a case of neurotrophic keratitis caused by lightning. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old man was hit by lightning and suffered eye injury. He eventually developed neurotrophic keratitis. RESULTS: The patient's injury history and burn site were analyzed, and it was judged that lightning directly damaged his cornea, eventually resulting in neurotrophic keratitis. Fortunately, the patient's vision improved after treatment. CONCLUSION: Lightning can cause eye damage, and the clinical manifestations are diverse. Lightning currents cause corneal nerve loss, re

Eruptive disseminated pyogenic granulomas following lightning injury.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a common benign acquired vascular tumor. It classically presents as a solitary friable nodule on the face or distal extremities. Disseminated eruption is rare and can occur spontaneously or secondary to various triggers, including burn injury. To date, the literature reports only 13 cases of eruptive PGs following burn injury, most from exposure to boiling milk or water. We report the first case of disseminated eruptive PGs following a lightning injury. CASE: A 17-year-old previously healthy boy developed second- and third-degree burns following lightnin

Lightning injury: two case histories and a review of management.

Two cases of fatal lightning injury are described. Fixed dilated pupils should not be taken as an indicator of death after a lightning strike. Persons who fail to breath spontaneously within one minute of lightning shock should receive external cardiac massage and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Paralysis may persist as result of cerebral oedema or prolonged hypoxia-it is therefore suggested that adequate ventilation and metabolic balance should be maintained until recovery or death.

Epidemiology, morbidity, mortality and treatment of lightning injuries in a Turkish burns units.

Deaths from lightning injuries are infrequent--0.2-0.8 per million per year. The victims are mostly young, active people who are struck during various outdoor activities in the summer months. From November 1975 to October 1998; 22 lightning burns were treated in Ankara Numune Teaching and Research Hospital. The mean age of the patients was 32.9 (12-65) years, the female/male ratio 9/13 and the mean duration of hospital stay 15.4 (1-62) days. The commonest clinical symptoms were confusion, amnesia (5 patients), neurological dysfunction (2 patients), cystitis (4 patients), and cardiac arrhythmia

Predictors of mortality following electrical and lightning injuries in Malawi: A decade of experience.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical injuries can be devastating, and data is lacking in low-resource settings. We aimed to identify predictors of mortality following electrical and lightning injuries (ELI) in Malawi. METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational study of patients presenting with ELI and burn injuries at a tertiary hospital in Malawi from 2011 to 2020. Outcomes were compared and predictors of mortality were modeled. RESULTS: A total of 382 ELI and 6371 burn patients were included. The mean ages for ELI and burn groups were 24 ± 14 and 11 ± 14 years, respectively (p < 0.01). Most p

Atypical Dermal Findings in a Patient Following a Lightning Strike Injury.

Lightning is a common atmospheric occurrence. However, lightning strikes are not a frequent environmental cause of human injury. Survivors may present with Lichtenberg figures, a fern-like skin manifestation, and burns of varying severity. After a lightning strike, our patient demonstrated atypical cutaneous manifestations of large, ecchymotic discolorations on the medial upper extremities. After a comprehensive evaluation, the patient fully recovered and was discharged home without limitations. This case highlights lightning strike injury, including common findings, epidemiology, mechanisms,

Lightning-strike-induced acute lung injury: a case report.

Lightning strike is an environmental electrical injury with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Lightning strike injuries are also considered to be high-voltage injuries. Respiratory injuries associated with lightning strikes include pulmonary edema, pulmonary contusion, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and pulmonary hemorrhage. In addition to direct damage, the affected patients are also exposed to secondary trauma; similarly, many other mechanisms associated with lightning injury have the same risk. It will therefore always be a rational approach to evaluate patients as multiple traum
