Assessment of beneficial effects and identification of host adaptation-associated genes of Ligilactobacillus salivarius isolated from badgers.

BACKGROUND: Ligilactobacillus salivarius has been frequently isolated from the gut microbiota of humans and domesticated animals and has been studied as a candidate probiotic. Badger (Meles meles) is known as a "generalist" species that consumes complex foods and exhibits tolerance and resistance to certain pathogens, which can be partly attributed to the beneficial microbes such as L. salivarius in the gut microbiota. However, our understanding of the beneficial traits and genomic features of badger-originated L. salivarius remains elusive. RESULTS: In this study, nine L. salivarius strains

Probiotic efficacy and mechanism of a pigeon derived Ligilactobacillus salivarius strain in promoting growth and intestinal development of pigeons.

BACKGROUND: With the gradual rise of antibiotic-free farming practices, the exploration of novel, green, and low-pollution alternatives to antibiotics has become one of the key research focus in the field of agricultural science. In the development of antibiotic alternatives, probiotics, particularly host-associated probiotics, have been found to play a significant role in enhancing the production performance of livestock and poultry. However, research on and application of probiotics specifically for meat pigeons remain relatively underdeveloped. OBJECTIVE: To assess and investigate the prob

Application of Ligilactobacillus salivarius SP36, a Strain Isolated from an Old Cheese Seal, as an Adjunct Culture in Cheesemaking.

Adjunct cultures originating from artisanal cheese environments may play an important role in recreating and developing traditional cheese flavours, thanks to their enzymatic activities, involved in different metabolic pathways that occur during cheese ripening. In this work, Ligilactobacillus salivarius SP36, a strain isolated from an old cheese seal, was added as an adjunct culture to the cheese's raw milk, and its effect on the microbiological, physical-chemical and sensory characteristics of the cheese was studied. The use of L. salivarius SP36 in cheese manufacturing had no significant (p

Ligilactobacillus salivarius XP132 with antibacterial and immunomodulatory activities inhibits horizontal and vertical transmission of Salmonella Pullorum in chickens.

Probiotics are increasingly recognized for their capacity to combat pathogenic bacteria. In this study, we isolated a strain of Ligilactobacillus salivarius XP132 from the gut microbiota of healthy chickens. This strain exhibited resistance to low pH and bile salts, auto-aggregation capabilities, and the ability to co-aggregate with pathogenic Salmonella. The in vitro antibacterial activity of Ligilactobacillus salivarius XP132 was tested using an Oxford cup antibacterial test, and the results showed that Ligilactobacillus salivarius XP132 exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, with

Ligilactobacillus salivarius 8-2 attenuates intestinal mucosal injury in chicks via the mitochondrial fision-glycometabolism reprogramming axis.

The intestinal mucosa is crucial for nutrient absorption and barrier function. In this study, a newly identified strain of Ligilactobacillus salivarius (L. sa. 8-2) exhibited a mucosal protective effect in chick intestinal injury models. However, the underlying mechanisms need to be clarified. In vivo, chicks were pre-fed with L. sa. 8-2 supernatant or its precipitate and then challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or Salmonella Typhimurium (STm). The results showed that L. sa. 8-2 and its supernatant significantly reduced intestinal epithelial apoptosis, increased goblet cell density and Mu

Metabolites, flavor profiles and ripening characteristics of Monascus-ripened cheese enhanced by Ligilactobacillus salivarius AR809 as adjunct culture.

Adjunct cultures strongly determined the distinguishing sensorial and nutritional characteristics of cheeses. Metabolites, flavor profiles and ripening characteristics of Monascus-ripened cheese enhanced by the co-fermentation of Ligilactobacillus salivarius AR809 were investigated. The AR809 significantly increased the contents of soluble nitrogen, small peptides (<1200 Da), free amino acids, and casein degradation degree in the resulting cheese. Furthermore, AR809 significantly promoted the formation of methyl ketones during cheese maturation. Based on untargeted metabolomics analysis, metab

Ligilactobacillus salivarius NCU-41 reduces oxidative stress to ameliorate Parkinson's disease by regulating the AKT/Nrf2 signaling pathway.

A growing body of evidence suggests that the gut microbiota influences the onset and progression of Parkinson's disease (PD) by regulating oxidative stress pathways. However, existing evidence remains the phenotypic level, and high-quality research is still lacking regarding specific probiotic strains with clearly defined ameliorative functions and their precise underlying molecular mechanisms. In this study, high-throughput sequencing confirmed significant differences in the gut microbiota between PD patients and healthy individuals. Furthermore, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from he

Ligilactobacillus Salivarius improve body growth and anti-oxidation capacity of broiler chickens via regulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Certain strains of probiotic bacteria can secret functional substances namely digestive enzymes and functional peptides to regulate physiological conditions such as digestion and anti-oxidation, which are often incorporated in industrial broiler chick production. However, few studies have detailed the action mechanisms and effects of these bacteria on regulating growth and anti-oxidation levels in broiler chickens. Ligilactobacillus salivarius is a strain of probiotic bacteria used as dietary supplement. In the present study, Ligilactobacillus salivarius was evaluated for its secreted digestiv

Use of Ligilactobacillus salivarius SP36 as an Adjunct Culture by an Artisan Dairy and Isolation of New Autochthonous Strains with Technological Potential for Cheesemaking.

Artisanal cheese quality relies on a complex microbiota. The generalized use of commercial starter cultures has been associated with reduced microbial diversity, fueling interest in using indigenous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as adjunct cultures. This study aimed to evaluate Ligilactobacillus salivarius SP36 as a starter or adjunct culture in ripened cheeses. Culture-based and culture-independent analyses were performed, together with the assessment of some physico-chemical parameters (pH, water activity, and color), including the profile of volatile compounds. All cheeses were microbiological

From Macromolecule to Microbe: Identification of Ligilactobacillus salivarius D3-8 as a Key Degrader of Ejiao and a Novel Therapeutic Probiotic for Ulcerative Colitis.

Background/Objectives: Ejiao, a macromolecular protein complex derived from donkey hide, is a traditional Chinese medicine with clinically demonstrated efficacy against ulcerative colitis (UC). Due to its large molecular size and poor absorbability, its therapeutic effects are presumed to depend on gut microbiota. We hypothesized that specific gut bacteria capable of degrading Ejiao might also mediate its biological functions. Methods: To test this hypothesis, a systematic investigation was conducted by integrating culturomics, proteomics, metabolomics, 16S rRNA gene amplicon high-throughput s
