Valorization of lignin based on its biological activities is always suffering the restriction from lignin heterogeneity, including wide molecular weight distributions and variable functional group contents. In this work, organosolv ethanol lignin (OEL) from corn stalk was divided into four fractions by multiple organic solvent successive extraction and the anti-tyrosinase activities of four obtained fractions were compared to evaluate the effect of lignin heterogeneity on the anti-tyrosinase activity. The characterization revealed that the successive extraction realized the fractionation of th

Lignin has long been recognized as a potential feedstock for aromatic molecules; however, most lignin depolymerization methods create a complex mixture of products. The present study describes an alkaline aerobic oxidation method that converts lignin extracted from poplar into a collection of oxygenated aromatics, including valuable commercial compounds such as vanillin and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) is shown to be an effective method to isolate the individual compounds from the complex product mixture. The liquid-liquid extraction method proceeds in two

Lignin is the most affluent natural aromatic biopolymer on the earth, which is the promising renewable source for valuable products to promote the sustainability of biorefinery. Flavonoids are a class of plant polyphenolic secondary metabolites containing the benzene ring structure with various biological activities, which are largely applied in health food, pharmaceutical, and medical fields. Due to the aromatic similarity, microbial conversion of lignin derived aromatics to flavonoids could facilitate flavonoid biosynthesis and promote the lignin valorization. This review thereby prospects a

In order to assess the possibility of using lignin to remove Cr(III) from waters, the adsorption of Cr(III) on lignin isolated from black liquor, a waste product of the paper industry, was investigated. The influences of pH, lignin dosage, contact time, ionic strength, Cr(III) concentration and other metals were investigated. The Cr(III) adsorption was strongly dependent on pH and adsorbent dosage, but independent of ionic strength and other metal ions. The adsorption kinetic data can be described well with pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium data can be well fitted using Langmuir tw

Lignin represents a promising renewable feedstock for producing oxygenated aromatic intermediates that can serve as potential precursors for subsequent SAF upgrading. However, non-noble metal catalysts often suffer from metal aggregation and active-site degradation during lignin depolymerization. Herein, a carbon-confined Ni catalyst (20Ni/LC) was developed via a molecular self-assembly-assisted hydrothermal carbonization strategy. The constructed Ni-N-C interfacial structure regulates the electronic properties of Ni sites and strengthens metal-carbon interactions. Using enzymatic hydrolysis l

Lignin acetylation, one of the most widespread chemical modifications used for improve the solubility of this biopolymer in organic solvents and increase polymer-lignin compatibility, has been performed for decades using time-consuming methodologies and acetylating agents with serious drawbacks. Moreover, traditional acetylation reactions generally conduce to non-selective acetylation of both aliphatic and phenolic groups. In this work, we demonstrated that partial and selective acetylation of kraft lignin can be carried out through a greener, simple and fast microwave-assisted process using a

The research aim of this work is to determine the influence of lignin modification methods on lignin-phenol-formaldehyde (LPF) adhesive properties. Thus, glyoxal (G), phenol (P), ionic liquid (IL), and maleic anhydride (MA) were used to modify lignin. The modified lignins were used for phenol substitution (50 wt%) in phenol-formaldehyde adhesives. The prepared resins were then used for the preparation of wood particleboard. These LPF resins were characterized physicochemically, namely by using standard methods to determine gel time, solids content, density, and viscosity, thus the physicochemi

Scedosporium species are usually soil saprophytes but some members of the genus such as S. apiospermum and S. aurantiacum have been regularly reported as causing human respiratory infections, particularly in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Because of their low sensitivity to almost all available antifungal drugs, a better understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of these fungi is mandatory. Likewise, identification of the origin of the contamination of patients with CF may be helpful to propose prophylactic measures. In this aim, environmental studies were conducted demonstrating that Sc

Ligninolytic extracellular enzymes, including lignin peroxidase, are topical owing to their high redox potential and prospective industrial applications. The prospective applications of lignin peroxidase span through sectors such as biorefinery, textile, energy, bioremediation, cosmetology, and dermatology industries. The litany of potentials attributed to lignin peroxidase is occasioned by its versatility in the degradation of xenobiotics and compounds with both phenolic and non-phenolic constituents. Over the years, ligninolytic enzymes have been studied however; research on lignin peroxidas

Benzene is a widely used commodity chemical, which is currently produced from fossil resources. Lignin, a waste from lignocellulosic biomass industry, is the most abundant renewable source of benzene ring in nature. Efficient production of benzene from lignin, which requires total transformation of Csp2-Csp3/Csp2-O into C-H bonds without side hydrogenation, is of great importance, but has not been realized. Here, we report that high-silica HY zeolite supported RuW alloy catalyst enables in situ refining of lignin, exclusively to benzene via coupling Bronsted acid catalyzed transformation of th

Lignin is the most abundant aromatic plant component in terrestrial ecosystems. This study was conducted to determine the contribution of lignin residues in natural water to the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. We investigated the formation of different classes of DBPs from lignin model compounds, lignin polymers, and humic substances using two common disinfection techniques, chlorination and chloramination. The contributions of lignin to the overall formation of DBPs from these organic products were determined based on the observed abundances of individual lignin

Kraft lignin (KL) from industrial pulping of E. globulus wood was subjected to the oxidative modification with the aim to produce sorbent mimicking humic matter for the bioremediation purposes. Lignin was oxidized by polyoxometalate Na(5)[PMo(10)V(2)O(40)] (POM), solely or in the presence of laccase, under pre-selected aerobic conditions (50-60°C, 1-2h, oxygen pressure 5 bar). The most pronounced lignin oxidation without its depolymerisation was observed in the reaction system POM/O(2). Modified lignins possessed increased amounts of COOH (up to 15 %) and CO (up to 500 %) groups, when compared

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts derived from sustainable resources are desirable for fuel cell related electrochemical systems. Herein, a dual-valorization strategy of lignin is employed to construct an intertwined Fe-N-LCNT catalyst, and its performance is evaluated in direct lignin fuel cells (DLFCs). The CNT-assisted structure improves electrical conductivity and exposes abundant FeN active sites. Consequently, an onset potential (Eonset) of 0.93 V and a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.87 V are obtained in 0.1 M KOH. Rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) measurements indicate a near

A novel binary solvent system consisting of alcohols (e.g., methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) and dichloromethane was developed as an efficient dissolution system for dissolving various types of lignin. It was found that in this dissolution system, adjusting the volume ratio of alcohol and dichloromethane will significantly affect the solubility of lignin. At the same time, this study proposed that the reason why the solvent can dissolve lignin was the hydrophobic skeleton and hydrophilic groups can be solvated by dichloromethane and alcohols respectively, which significantly promoted the dissol

Lignin represents a promising alternative to fossil fuels for producing high-value aromatic chemicals and carbon-based materials. The integrated valorization of lignin for the production of carbon materials and chemicals is a crucial sustainable strategy. In this work, lignin-derived carbon-supported tungsten catalysts (W@CL) were fabricated via a facile chelation-anchoring strategy coupled with one-step in situ carbonization for lignin hydrogenolysis. This strategy achieved the uniform dispersion of tungsten trioxide (WO3) and the controllable reduction of tungsten during carbonization, there

Lignin is a natural macromolecular within woody plant. Its integrally isolation is a challenging because the conventional preparation causes its dark brown. Herein, we reported a method for extracting light-colored lignin using a mixed solvent of 1,4-dioxane and methanol in acidic conditions, achieved by introducing methoxy groups onto the α‑carbon of lignin side chains via nucleophilic substitution. The reaction declined the condensed structures of the extracted lignin so that the color of the product was light-yellow in the whiteness index of 68.2 (CIELAB color parameters L*, a* and b* value
