A meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of divergent thinking using activation likelihood estimation.

There are conflicting findings regarding brain regions and networks underpinning creativity, with divergent thinking tasks commonly used to study this. A handful of meta-analyses have attempted to synthesise findings on neural mechanisms of divergent thinking. With the rapid proliferation of research and recent developments in fMRI meta-analysis approaches, it is timely to reassess the regions activated during divergent thinking creativity tasks. Of particular interest is examining the evidence regarding large-scale brain networks proposed to be key in divergent thinking and extending this wor

An Activation Likelihood Estimation Meta-Analysis of Specific Functional Alterations in Dorsal Attention Network in Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is known as the prodromal stage of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) spectrum. The recent studies have advised that functional alterations in the dorsal attention network (DAN) could be used as a sensitive marker to forecast the progression from MCI to AD. Therefore, our aim was to investigate specific functional alterations in the DAN in MCI. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science and chose relevant articles based on the three functional indicators, the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), regional homogeneity (

Effect of acupuncture on brain functional networks in patients with mild cognitive impairment: an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medical therapy, may have a certain therapeutic effect in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Furthermore, some studies have explored the effects of acupuncture on the brain functional networks of MCI patients to investigate the mechanism of action. Different studies have analysed the brain regions involved in acupuncture-induced changes, but (to our knowledge) these have not been summarized by a systematic review. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, CNKI and other databases in

Likelihood ratio calibration aligns MAVE and automated patch-clamp functional evidence for KCNH2 variants in long QT syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Many people with long QT syndrome carry missense variants that are classified as variants of uncertain significance. Functional evidence from laboratory experiments can help improve genetic diagnosis, but it requires proper validation before use in a clinical interpretation framework. OBJECTIVE: To compare two functional datasets for KCNH2 variants: a high-throughput assay that measures how much KV11.1 channel reaches the cell surface, and automated patch clamp, which measures the level of potassium current in HEK293 cells. METHODS: Automated patch clamp results were converted in

Altered sensorimotor activation patterns in idiopathic dystonia-an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of functional brain imaging studies.

Dystonia is characterized by sustained or intermittent muscle contractions causing abnormal, often repetitive, movements or postures. Functional neuroimaging studies have yielded abnormal task-related sensorimotor activation in dystonia, but the results appear to be rather variable across studies. Further, study size was usually small including different types of dystonia. Here we performed an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies in patients with primary dystonia to test for convergence of dystonia-related alterations in task-related activity

The brain on expert medical performance: a systematic review and activation likelihood estimation functional magentic resonance imaging meta-analysis.

Healthcare systems require the efficient development of expert performance. Several studies have explored the cognitive foundations of medical expert performance, especially in radiology. Studying at the brain level could provide further insight into specific mechanisms mediating medical expert performance. Researchers have recently begun to systematically employ neuroimaging in this field. Most studies focus on specific specializations rather than identifying shared neural substrates across disciplines. This systematic review and activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis followed t

The changed functional status of the brain was involved in patients with poststroke aphasia: Coordinate-based (activation likelihood estimation) meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although many functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have investigated the language architecture and neurobiological mechanism underlying poststroke aphasia (PSA), the pathophysiological mechanisms of PSA still remain poorly understood. In addition to a limited number of subjects (<20) tested with different methodologies and stimuli, inconsistent reports of the brain regions involved have been a major factor. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis of 12 peer-reviewed studies of abnormal brain activation regions in PSA patients at rest using activation likeliho

The Neural Mechanism of Long-Term Motor Training Affecting Athletes' Decision-Making Function: An Activation Likelihood Estimation Meta-Analysis.

Decision-making is an advanced cognitive function that promotes information processes in complex motor situations. In recent years, many neuroimaging studies have assessed the effects of long-term motor training on athletes' brain activity while performing decision-making tasks, but the findings have been inconsistent and a large amount of data has not been quantitatively summarized until now. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the neural mechanism of long-term motor training affecting the decision-making function of athletes by using activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis.

Consumers' behavior in quantitative microbial risk assessment for pathogens in raw milk: Incorporation of the likelihood of consumption as a function of storage time and temperature.

Foodborne disease as a result of raw milk consumption is an increasing concern in Western countries. Quantitative microbial risk assessment models have been used to estimate the risk of illness due to different pathogens in raw milk. In these models, the duration and temperature of storage before consumption have a critical influence in the final outcome of the simulations and are usually described and modeled as independent distributions in the consumer phase module. We hypothesize that this assumption can result in the computation, during simulations, of extreme scenarios that ultimately lea

Prenatal Exposure to Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Maternal Thyroid Function during Pregnancy in a Cohort with High Familial Likelihood of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Thyroid hormones supplied by the mother are essential for fetal brain development but could be disrupted by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). We explored how prenatal PFAS exposures relate to maternal thyroid function in pregnant participants from the MARBLES cohort. We analyzed 212 serum samples from 151 pregnant women who later had a child with diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), nontypical development (non-TD), or typical development (TD) by age 3. We quantified nine PFAS, total triiodothyronine (TT3), total thyroxine (TT4), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating h

Inhibitory control in obsessive compulsive disorder: A systematic review and activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) often show deficits in inhibitory control, which may underlie poor control over obsessions and compulsions. Several functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments utilizing a variety of tasks have investigated the neural correlates of inhibitory control in OCD. Evidence from existing meta-analyses suggests aberrant activation of regions in fronto-striatal circuits during inhibitory control. However, new fMRI articles have since been published, and a more rigorous methodology for neuroimaging meta-analyses is now available.
