The MEN II b syndrome is a form of multiple endocrine neoplasie (MEN). The main features are medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, pheochromocytoma, adenoma of the parathyroid glands and a marfanoid appearance. The authors report a case of MEN II b with a characteristic combination of ocular findings: thickened upper eyelids, ectopia puncti lacrimalis, decreased secretion of the lacrimal gland, medullary corneal nerves and a ring of neuromatous tissue at the limbus corneae. The differential diagnosis and the possibility of early diagnosis and management of this endocrine neoplasia are discussed

The authors describe central and peripapillary chorioretinal dystrophies seen in 3 patients. In 2 of them a crystalline chorioretinal dystrophy was found. This is compared to the "simple" chorioretinal dystrophy of the third patient. Crystalline deposits in the limbus corneae were found in both patients with crystalline chorioretinopathy. Higher serum cholesterol levels and more widespread chorioretinal dystrophy are associated with greater corneal involvement. Visual acuity, central scotomata and the changes in the electroretinograms correlate with the chorioretinal dystrophy. The crystalline

In our previous studies, we noted a non-uniform distribution of protein tracer preferentially entering the anterior stromal lamellae of the cornea from the limbus. Given other differences reported previously between the anterior and posterior lamellae of the cornea, and the number of corneal disorders in which abnormalities are preferentially confined to either the anterior or posterior lamellae, we were prompted to examine the distribution of albumin in normal human and bovine cornea. The distribution of albumin in bovine and human cornea was studied immunohistochemically. Total soluble prote

We have compared the biomechanical properties of human and porcine corneas using vibrational optical coherence tomography (VOCT). The elastic modulus of the cornea has been previously reported in the literature to vary from about several kPa to more than several GPa based on the results of different techniques. In addition, the formation of corneal cones near the central cornea in keratoconus has been observed in the clinic. Measurements of the resonant frequency and morphology of human and porcine corneas were used to evaluate the role of the limbus in corneal stabilization, the effect of Bow

The cornea is the clear tissue at the front of the eye that transmits light to the retina at the back of the eye. The cornea is covered by an epithelium and surrounded by a narrow band of tissue known as the limbus. The limbus has two important roles in maintaining a healthy corneal epithelium. First, stem cells for the corneal epithelium reside at the limbus and not in the cornea. Second, the limbus acts as a barrier separating the clear avascular corneal epithelium from the surrounding vascular conjunctival tissue. A failure of these limbal functions can result in the painful and blinding di

Limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs) are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the corneal surface. Injuries and diseases of the eye may result in a vision condition called limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). Without limbal stem cells, the cornea becomes opaque, vascularized, and inflamed. Cultured LESC therapy as a treatment method was first described in 1997, and LESCs cultured from either patients or donors have been used to treat LSCD successfully. However, the main source of cornea for LSCD treatment is from donors, which are too few to meet the demand (less than 1:70 of cases). T

A recently characterized integrin alpha-chain, alpha 9, forms heterodimers with the integrin beta 1-chain and is present in the skin with a distribution similar to that of alpha 2 and alpha 3, other beta 1 integrins. To determine whether alpha 9 is expressed in the stratified squamous epithelium of the cornea, we used immunohistochemical techniques to compare the distribution of alpha 9 in the adult mouse cornea with that of alpha 3. Abundant alpha 9 was expressed in the lateral and basal membranes of the basal cells of the conjunctiva and corneal limbus, but very little alpha 9 was present in

BACKGROUND: The limbus is located at a 2-mm-wide area between the bulbar conjunctiva and the cornea and has been suggested to be the niche of corneal epithelial stem cells and immune cells. Like the skin and intestines, the cornea is also an important mucosal surface, and immune cells on the cornea play critical roles in immune surveillance to ensure barrier surface homeostasis and protection from various environmental damage and infections. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis of protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type C positive (PTPRC+) hematopoietic cells from the corneal lim

The peripheral cornea is anatomically and physiologically distinct from its central counterpart. The major differences relate to the gradual transition of corneal tissues to those of the conjunctiva, episclera, and sclera; furthermore, the vascular structures, lymphatics, and inflammatory cells from these neighboring structures are intimately associated with the limbus and periphery of the cornea. The peripheral cornea is thereby predisposed to three main classes of disorders which do not normally involve the central cornea. First, local conditions affecting the sclera and conjunctiva may seco

The limbus is a narrow band of tissue that encircles the cornea, the transparent 'window' into the eye. The outermost layer of the cornea is the epithelium, which is necessary for clear vision. The limbus acts as a 'reservoir' for limbal stem cells which maintain and regenerate the corneal epithelium. It also functions as a barrier to the conjunctiva and its blood vessels. Limbal stem cell deficiency is a general term for diseases which are characterised by the impairment of the limbus, limbal stem cells and their ability to replenish the corneal epithelium through proliferation and differenti

The corneal epithelium (CE) is spread between two domains, the outer vascularized limbus and the avascular cornea proper. Epithelial cells undergo constant migration from the limbus to the vision-critical central cornea. Coordinated with this migration, the cells undergo differentiation changes where a pool of unique stem/precursor cells at the limbus yields the mature cells that reach the corneal center. Differentiation is heralded by the expression of the corneal-specific Krt12. Processing data acquired by scRNA-Seq showed that the increase in Krt12 expression occurs in four distinct steps w

The limbus forms the border between the transparent cornea and opaque sclera, contains the pathways of aqueous humour outflow, and is the site of surgical incisions for cataract and glaucoma. Externally the epithelial cell border between conjunctiva and cornea possesses multipotential cells important for differentiation of the respective cell types. By the same token, the internal limbal border zone between corneal endothelium and anterior trabeculum appears to contain specialised cells some of which are activated to migrate and repopulate the trabecular meshwork after trabecular injury. The cornea needs to be transparent to visible light and precisely curved to provide the correct refractive power. Both properties are governed by its structure. Corneal transparency arises from constructive interference of visible light due to the relatively ordered arrangement of collagen fibrils in the corneal stroma. The arrangement is controlled by the negatively charged proteoglycans surrounding the fibrils. Small changes in fibril organisation can be tolerated but larger changes cause light scattering. Corneal keratocytes do not scatter light because their refractive index matches that o

BACKGROUND: Sclerocornea, a congenital corneal pathology characterized by bilateral scleralization of the cornea, which can be found in few cases with posterior fossa malformationshemangiomas-arterial anomalies-cardiac defects-eye abnormalities-sternal cleft and supraumbilical raphe (PHACES) syndrome. Presence of vascularization in peripheral cornea and smaller diameter of recipient cornea correlate to poor outcome of penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in sclerocornea. Here we report a method to preserve limbus during PKP for small, irregular, and scleralized cornea.

PURPOSE: To report a case of corneal neovascularization misdiagnosed as total limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD).
METHODS: This is a case report of a 61-year-old woman who has a history of bilateral idiopathic scleritis, keratitis, and uveitis for more than 20 years. She was diagnosed with total LSCD in her left eye based on clinical presentation alone and was confirmed as a candidate for limbal transplantation at several major tertiary eye care centers in the United States. We describe a case illustrating a new technique of using intraoperative optical coherence tomography (IOCT) for foreign body removal from the limbus and cornea. In this case, fragments of a fish hook in the temporal limbus and cornea were identified on the OCT. The residual pieces were then removed, assisted by high-resolution, real-time cross-sectional imaging, IOCT. While this technique involves steep learning curve, we believe that it is safe for the patient and helps surgeon with instant decision making and reduce orbital manipulation.

PURPOSE: In the adult cornea, epithelial cells are maintained by limbal stem cells (LSCs) that cycle slowly and give rise to transient amplifying (TA) cells. These migrate centripetally, differentiate outward to the surface, and are then lost by desquamation. This study was conducted to analyze the contribution of human central corneal epithelial cells toward corneal epithelial regeneration.
METHODS: A human corneal organotypic culture model was used to assess corneal healing in vitro in 12 matched cornea pairs. Two types of ablation were studied: (1) A ring-shaped, transepithelial, excimer l
